Book excerpt: He went searching for a fresh start. He didn't expect to find unusual friends, fierce enemies, and primal powers. Jason thought that it was the end of his life after being attacked and hunted by a band of ruthless thugs. Instead, he tapped into the source of creation and emerged from his Death Experience with magical powers. Rescued by a mountain troll and a battle mage, he becomes part of an unlikely group of housemates, defending a mystical old mansion from those who want to destroy it. Joined by a cheerful granny, an incubus who is entirely too attractive, and a tiny fierce kitten, Jason finds a new sense of belonging and purpose. The band of misfits are on the losing side of the mage war until Jason discovers the rules of magic are not as set in stone as they appear to be. Jason has little power, but he discovers he can see magic and manipulate it at a microscopic level. What he detects begins his journey into discovering how his new powers really work, and just might be the edge they need to survive. If you like witty dialogue, diverse characters, magic that feels real, and intense action, then you will love this LGBTQ urban fantasy. If you like Harry Dresden or Iron Druid, or enjoy a thriller grounded in magic, then buy Misfit Mage today and step into a whole new enchanted world. Download or read book Shannon Taggart: Séance written by and published by Fulgur Press. This book was released on 2019-10-22 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American photographer Shannon Taggart (born 1977) became aware of spiritualism as a teenager when her cousin received a message from a medium that revealed details about her grandfather's death. In 2001, while working as a photojournalist, she began photographing where that message was received--Lily Dale, New York, home to the world's largest spiritualist community, proceeding to other communities in, for example, Arthur Findlay College in the UK. Taggart expected to spend one summer figuring out the tricks of the spiritualist trade. Instead, spiritualism's mysterious processes, earnest practitioners and neglected photographic history became an inspiration. Her project evolved into an 18-year journey that has taken her around the world in search of "ectoplasm"-- the elusive substance that is said to be both spiritual and material. With Séance, Taggart offers a series of haunting photographs exploring spiritualist practices in the US, England and Europe. Supported with a commentary on her experiences, a foreword by Dan Aykroyd, creator of Ghostbusters and fourth-generation spiritualist, and illustrated essays from Andreas Fischer and Tony Oursler, Séance examines spiritualism's relationship with human celebrity and its connections with technology, and concludes with the debate over ectoplasm and how spiritualism can move forward in the 21st century.

Book excerpt: Start with Chaucer, Dickens, Blake and Larkin in Westminster Abbey. Hop on a bus through Zadie Smith's North London or spend an afternoon at Colliers Wood Nature Reserve in Nottinghamshire and look at the lake 'all grey and visionary, stretching into the moist, translucent vista of trees and meadow' that D. H. Lawrence described in Women in Love. Come back to London to walk along Monica Ali's Brick Lane and try to push a trolley through the wall of Platform 93/4 at King's Cross Station. From the Bronte parsonage in Haworth to Waugh's Castle Howard; from Beatrix Potter's Lake District, Shakespeare's Stratford and Robert Louis Stevenson's Edinburgh, there are gardens, monuments, museums, churches and a surprising quantity of stained glass. There are walks both urban and rural, where you can explore real landscapes or imaginary haberdasher's shops. There's the club where Buck's Fizz was invented and a pub where you can eat Sherlock's Steak & Ale Pie. And there's a railway station where you can stroke the muzzle of one of the world's most famous and endearing bears. You can start in Cornwall and work your way up to the Gateway to the Scottish Highlands, taking detours to Northern Ireland in the west and Norfolk in the east. Or you can drop in on spec on the place nearest to you. Wherever you are in the United Kingdom, you're never far from something associated with a good book.

Book Synopsis The Scottish Covenanter Genealogical Index - (1630-1712) by : Isabelle McCall MacLean
Download or read book The Scottish Covenanter Genealogical Index - (1630-1712) written by Isabelle McCall MacLean and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-02-22 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work evolved out of a love for my ancestors, one being John Whitelaw, the Covenanter Monkland Martyr, who was executed for his religious beliefs in Edinburgh, 1683. While searching for his records I came across reference to thousands of other Scottish Covenanters. This Index lists those Covenanters found in some books written about the period between 1630 and 1712.There are many, many more Covenanters, whose names need to be added to this work, and, God willing, I will do it. The Covenanters were steadfast in their Presbyterian beliefs and refused to take an oath unto the King stating that he was the head of the church. They believed that Christ was the Head of the Church and their loyalty to this belief allowed them to lay their lives down for it. The Royalists and Dragoons, who were seeking to bring them into obedience to the King, relentlessly chased the Covenanters from glen to glen. This disregard for their civil rights was brutally carried out basically in the Lowlands of Scotland. Many of their records were destroyed along with their lives and their stories only live in family lore and books that were written about them. I have extracted some of their names and created The Scottish Covenanter Genealogical Index, which is by no means complete, but is a work in progress.
