Book excerpt: This publication addresses the pressing issues of vocational teacher education (VTE), focusing on institutional, organizational and governance aspects. Firstly, it summarizes the results of the four-year Erasmus+ capacity-building project "New Mechanisms of Partnership-based Governance and Standardization of Vocational Teacher Education in Ukraine" (PAGOSTE), funded by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency. The project's focus has been governance in VTE in Ukraine. Secondly, it goes beyond the narrow project context and explores challenges as well as good practices in VTE systems of other countries in and outside of Europe. Therefore, contributions from England, New Zealand, Australia, Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland complement the Ukrainian context and provide readers with a more comprehensive understanding of VTE systems.

Book excerpt: Many individuals with hearing impairments face significant challenges when transitioning from education to employment. These challenges are often exacerbated by a lack of understanding, limited support structures, and inadequate resources. As a result, they may struggle to find and maintain meaningful employment, leading to increased societal exclusion and economic hardship. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive understanding of the unique needs and barriers faced by hearing impaired individuals, and evidence-based strategies to support their successful transition into the workforce. Perspectives on Career Transitioning of Students with Hearing Impairments offers a comprehensive solution to the challenges of career transitioning for these students that have had educational resources that may be of reach as they enter the workforce. Drawing on extensive research and practical insights, the book provides a nuanced understanding of hearing impairment and its impact on career development. It explores various topics, including existing knowledge and attitudes, theories and methods, educational and policy issues, intervention studies, and guidelines for supporting these individuals in their career transitions. The book aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice by addressing these topics and offering actionable strategies and recommendations for educators, policymakers, and practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in cognitive science indicate that human and nonhuman primates share a range of behavioral and physiological characteristics that speak to the issue of language origins. This volume has three major themes, woven throughout the chapters. First, it is argued that scientists in animal behavior and anthropology need to move beyond theoretical debate to a more empirically focused and comparative approach to language. Second, those empirical and comparative methods are described, revealing underpinnings of language, some of which are shared by humans and other primates and others of which are unique to humans. New insights are discussed, and several hypotheses emerge concerning the evolutionary forces that led to the "design" of language. Third, evolutionary challenges that led to adaptive changes in communication over time are considered with an eye toward understanding various constraints that channeled the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich collection of writing from those negotiating disability in their lives - a group whose voices are not heard often enough My body and its place in the world seemed normal to me. Why wouldn’t it? I didn’t grow up disabled; I grew up with a problem. A problem that those around me wanted to fix. We have all felt that uncanny sensation that someone is watching us. The diagnosis helped but it didn’t fix everything. Don’t fear the labels. That identity, which I feared for so long, is now one of my greatest qualities. I had become disabled – not just by my disease, but by the way the world treated me. When I found that out, everything changed. One in five Australians has a disability. And disability presents itself in many ways. Yet disabled people are still underrepresented in the media and in literature. In Growing Up Disabled in Australia – compiled by writer and appearance activist Carly Findlay OAM – more than forty writers with a disability or chronic illness share their stories, in their own words. The result is illuminating. Contributors include senator Jordon Steele-John, paralympian Isis Holt, Dion Beasley, Sam Drummond, Astrid Edwards, Sarah Firth, El Gibbs, Eliza Hull, Gayle Kennedy, Carly-Jay Metcalfe, Fiona Murphy, Jessica Walton and many more.
