Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tactical Principles and Problems This book has been written in the hope that it may help junior officers of the regular service and militia who are beginning the study of tactics. In tactics, as in other sciences, the first steps are the most difficult to make, especially if the student has no instructor, as necessarily must frequently be the case. With this fact uppermost in his mind, the author has endeavored so to present the subjects herein treated that the book may be of special value to the student who is working without assistance. The problems have been restricted to the simpler and more usual operations of small forces of infantry and of cavalry, and of these two arms united. Artillery has not been dealt with because it is believed that the student will make better progress if he becomes familiar with the tactics of infantry and cavalry before undertaking the much more difficult subject of the three arms combined. After the student has mastered this book, he may take up with advantage the study of the many excellent works on the applied tactics of the three arms, most noted of which is Griepenkerl's Letters on Applied Tactics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Notes on the Solution of Tactical Problems: Departments of Military Art the Army Service Schools No amount of study of the theory alone of the art will, by itself, fit one to meet the emergencies of war with skill and certainty. To acquire such, not only must its principles be learned, but the habit, as well, of their application to concrete cases must be established. A man might read volumes on how to lay brick, but he could hardly attain skill thereat until he has long experience in the actual handling of his trowel. The military mind, like the mason's hand, requires practice in the use of its tactical tools to acquire dexterity. We do not have to wait for war to present its vital problems in order to begin the training of our officers in applied tactics. But the teaching of tac tics in time of peace by application to concrete situa tions requires no defense. To confound the critics of that system, one need but to point to the German Army, and to the map of Europe today. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Applied Tactics: With Solutions I am certain the intelligent reader will have no difficulty in finding for himself the reasons for any of the measures adopted which are not explained in the text. I wish to repudiate the widespread fallacy, which is often alleged as an excuse for careless work, that Tactical arrange ments are merely matters of individual opinion or caprice. This idea results in two practical evils: (1) Candidates have not the necessary esteem for their drill books which the latter doubtless deserve, as they contain the views of the most com petent authorities, not only of their own country, but of every nation that has secured a military reputation. (2) Candidates are inclined to think that unless they happen to hit upon the examiner's view, there is no chance of scoring high marks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moltke's Tactical Problems From 1858 to 1882 LL soldiers must feel indebted to the Prussian Grand General Staff for the publication of field-marshal von Moltke's Tactical Problems, and to my former brother officer, Major W. Bigge, of the Military History Department, for the care with which they have been collected and edited. I con sider myself fortunate in being able, by special permission of the General Staff, to present this translation to the officers of the British Service. It has been my aim to adhere closely to the original, rather than to render it into elegant English, which, although it might have been more readable, would have been a less exact and trustworthy guide for the student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Minor Tactics In most of the studies an endeavor has been made not only to set forth certain principles of minor tactics, but also to enable the reader to form for himself a mental picture of the manner in which troops might well be handled in case the conditions assumed in the various studies actually existed in the field. It is perhaps needless to say that the department does not consider any one of the solutions herein as the only correct solution to the problem presented in the particular situation, but merely as a solution that is regarded as reasonable. The same is true of all solutions prepared by the department for the various problems included in the course in military art at these schools. Written for trainers and participants of contests of all levels up to the highest level, this will appeal to high school teachers conducting a mathematics club who need a range of simple to complex problems and to those instructors wishing to pose a "problem of the week", thus bringing a creative atmosphere into the classrooms. Equally, this is a must-have for individuals interested in solving difficult and challenging problems. Each chapter starts with typical examples illustrating the central concepts and is followed by a number of carefully selected problems and their solutions. Most of the solutions are complete, but some merely point to the road leading to the final solution. In addition to being a valuable resource of mathematical problems and solution strategies, this is the most complete training book on the market.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have portrayed British participation in World War I as a series of tragic debacles, with lines of men mown down by machine guns, with untried new military technology, and incompetent generals who threw their troops into improvised and unsuccessful attacks. In this book a renowned military historian studies the evolution of British infantry tactics during the war and challenges this interpretation, showing that while the British army's plans and technologies failed persistently during the improvised first half of the war, the army gradually improved its technique, technology, and, eventually, its' self-assurance. By the time of its successful sustained offensive in the fall of 1918, says Paddy Griffith, the British army was demonstrating a battlefield skill and mobility that would rarely be surpassed even during World War II. Evaluating the great gap that exists between theory and practice, between textbook and bullet-swept mudfield, Griffith argues that many battles were carefully planned to exploit advanced tactics and to avoid casualties, but that breakthrough was simply impossible under the conditions of the time. According to Griffith, the British were already masters of "storm troop tactics" by the end of 1916, and in several important respects were further ahead than the Germans would be even in 1918. In fields such as the timing and orchestration of all-arms assaults, predicted artillery fire, "Commando-style" trench raiding, the use of light machine guns, or the barrage fire of heavy machine guns, the British led the world. Although British generals were not military geniuses, says Griffith, they should at least be credited for effectively inventing much of the twentieth-century's art of war.

Book excerpt: Influence: Science and Practice is an examination of the psychology of compliance (i.e. uncovering which factors cause a person to say "yes" to another's request) and is written in a narrative style combined with scholarly research. Cialdini combines evidence from experimental work with the techniques and strategies he gathered while working as a salesperson, fundraiser, advertiser, and other positions, inside organizations that commonly use compliance tactics to get us to say "yes". Widely used in graduate and undergraduate psychology and management classes, as well as sold to people operating successfully in the business world, the eagerly awaited revision of Influence reminds the reader of the power of persuasion. Cialdini organizes compliance techniques into six categories based on psychological principles that direct human behavior: reciprocation, consistency, social proof, liking, authority, and scarcity.
