This book was released on 1996-07-04 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive account, from first principles, of the methods of numerical quantum mechanics, beginning with formulations and fundamental postulates. The development continues with that of the Hamiltonian and angular momentum operators, and with methods of approximating the solutions of the Schroedinger equation with variational and perturbation methods.Chapter 3 is a description of the Hartree-Fock self-consistent field method, which is developed systematically for atoms. The Born-Oppenheimer approximation is introduced, and the numerical methods presented one by one thereafter in a logically consistent way that should be accessible to undergraduates. These include LCAO, Hartree-Fock-SCF method for molecules, Roothaan LCAO-MO-SCF method, and electron correlation energy.Chapter 4 is devoted to the more sophisticated computational methods in quantum chemistry, with an introduction to topics that include: the zero differential overlap approximation; Huckel MO theory of conjugated molecules; Pariser-Parr-Pople MO method; extended Huckel theory; neglect of differential overlap methods; invariance in space requirements; CNDO; INDO; NDDO; MINDO; MNDO; AM1; MNDO-PM3; SAM1; SINDO1; CNDO/S; PCILO,Xα; and ab initio methods. This is followed by an introduction to Moller-Plesset perturbation theory of many electrons, and coupled perturbed Hartree Fock theory, with a description of the coupled cluster method. Finally Chapter 5 applies these methods to problems of contemporary interest. The book is designed to be a junior/senior level text in computational quantum mechanics, suitable for undergraduates and graduates in chemistry, physics, computer science, and associated disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of reactive intermediates has been blossoming at a rapid rate in recent years and its impact on chemistry, both "pure" and "applied," as well as on biology, astronomy, and other areas of science, is enormous. Several books have been published which cover the area; one, edited by McManus, * surveys the subject in general at the senior undergraduate or beginning graduate level. In addition, a number of monographs have appeared which deal with individual topics such as carbenes, nitrenes, free radicals, carbanions, carbenium ions, and so on, in great depth. Our objective is somewhat different. We hope that these Advances in . . . type of volumes will appear at irregular intervals of a year to 18 months each. We intend to publish up-to-date reviews in relatively new areas of the chemistry of reactive intermediates. These will be written by world authorities in the field, each one of whom will give the reader a current in-depth review of all aspects of the chemistry of each of these species. It is our plan that the subjects to be reviewed will cover not only organic chemistry but also inorganic, physical, bio-, industrial, and atmospheric chemistry. The volumes themselves, we hope, will end up being reasonably interdisciplinary, though this need not and probably will not be the case for the individual reviews.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding chemical reactivity has been the permanent concern of chemists from time immemorial. If we were able to understand it and express it quantitatively there would practically remain no unsolved mystery, and reactions would be fully predictable, with their products and rates and even side reactions. The beautiful developments of thermodynamics through the 19th century supplied us with the knowledge of the way a reactions progresses, and the statistical view initiated by Gibbs has progressively led to an unders tanding closer to the microscopic phenomena. But is was always evident to all that these advances still left our understanding of chemical reactivity far behind our empirical knowledge of the chemical reaction in its practically infinite variety. The advances of recent years in quantum chemistry and statistical mechanics, enhanced by the present availability of powerful and fast compu ters, are very fast changing this picture, and bringing us really close to a microscopic understanding of chemical equilibria, reaction rates, etc.... This is the reason why our Society encouraged a few years ago the initiative of Professor Savo Bratos who, with a group of French colleagues, prepared an impressive study on "Reactivite chimique en phase liquide", a prospective report which was jointly published by the Societe Fran

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the proton and carbon, nitrogen is, with oxygen, the most impor tant atom in organic and especially bioorganic molecules. However, the development of nitrogen spectroscopy is indeed very recent. This is due to the fact that nitrogen-14, which is the naturally abundant iso tope, suffers, for structural studies, from the disadvantages inherent in nuclei with a quadrupolar moment (Table 1.1). Actually, indirect 15N measurements were reported in the early days of double resonance spectroscopy and the first direct detection of 15N resonance signals at the natural abundance level was realized in 1964 (R 17) at 4.33 MHz 1 (~ 1T) using a 15 mm o.d. cell in the field sweep mode (~ 0.16 min- ). Signal-to-noise ratios only of 3-4 were obtained for neat liquids and this low sensitivity of the 15N resonance still remains the main dis advantage for 15 spectroscopy (Table 1.1). However, nitrogen-15 has, N probably more than any other nucleus, benefited from the advances of NMR technology, i.e. Fourier transformation, multinuclear facilities, wide-bore super conducting solenoids, and, with the new generation of spectrometers, 15N-NMR is entering the field of routine investigation. Nevertheless, in spite of these spectacular improvements, obtaining 15N spectra of diluted species or large biochemical molecules is often not very easy and a good knowledge of the relaxation properties pecu liar to 15N may be necessary in order to adjust the pulse sequences and the decoupler duty cycle correctly (Section 2).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventh Jerusalem Symposium has tried to penetrate into a field of research towards which the efforts of a large number of the most variegated modern techniques are conversing: molecular and quantum pharmacology. The hope to elucidate the mode of action of drugs, to establish correlations between the electronic and con formational structures of drugs and their mode of action and level of activity, to derive from these data the nature of the cellular receptors and an understanding of the interaction of the drugs with those receptors - is a strong stimulus to enlarge and deepen the research efforts with the ultimate view to rationalize the design of more efficient and more specific drugs. The Symposium represents an attempt to survey the progress made so far in this respect and the methods and efforts employed in order to arrive at even greater achievements. The presentation of this Symposium differs somewhat from that of the preceding ones. Owing to the political events which disturbed the peace in the Middle East and therefore the normal activities of commerce and industry in Israel at least temporarily, the printing and distribution of this volume were entrusted to the Reidel Publishing Company. We wish to thank them for their very efficient col1aboration and for all their efforts to publish this volume with a minimum delay.
