Book Synopsis Marianne Werefkin and the Women Artists in Her Circle by :
Download or read book Marianne Werefkin and the Women Artists in Her Circle written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marianne Werefkin and the Women Artists in Her Circle traces the relationships between the modernist artists in Werefkin’s circle, including Erma Bossi, Elisabeth Epstein, Natalia Goncharova, Elizaveta Kruglikova, Else Lasker-Schüler, Marta Liepiņa-Skulme, Elena Luksch-Makowsky, and Maria Marc. The book demonstrates that their interactions were dominated not primarily by national ties, but rather by their artistic ideas, intellectual convictions, and gender roles; it offers an analysis of the various artistic scenes, the places of exchange, and the artists’ sources of inspiration. Specifically focusing on issues of cosmopolitan culture, transcultural dialogue, gender roles, and the building of new artistic networks, the collection of essays re-evaluates the contributions of these artists to the development of modern art. Contributors: Shulamith Behr, Marina Dmitrieva, Simone Ewald, Bernd Fäthke, Olga Furman, Petra Lanfermann, Tanja Malycheva, Galina Mardilovich, Antonia Napp, Carla Pellegrini Rocca, Dorothy Price, Hildegard Reinhardt, Kornelia Röder, Kimberly A. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteen essays by a group of emerging and established international scholars examine Paris as a thriving transnational arts community during a period of burgeoning global immigration. They address the experiences of important modern artists as well as foreign exiles, immigrants, students and expatriates within the larger trends of international mobility. In doing so, they explore the structures that permitted foreign artists to forge connections within and across national communities and contribute to the development of a hybrid and multivalent modern art.
Book Synopsis Giovanni Boldini in Impressionist Paris by : Sarah Lees
Download or read book Giovanni Boldini in Impressionist Paris written by Sarah Lees and published by Clark Art Institute. This book was released on 2009 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distinguished by his brilliantly energetic brushwork, Giovanni Boldini (1842-1931) was one of the most prominent Italian artists of the late 19th century. Still, he has remained little known beyond his native country. This beautiful book is the first published on Boldini in English in a generation and accompanies the first major exhibition of his works outside of Europe. Born in Ferrara, Boldini moved to Paris in 1871, where he lived for the rest of his life. This important volume focuses on his work from 1871 to 1886, which reflects the influence of his contemporaries--Degas, Manet, Caillebotte, Meissonier, and Fortuny, among others. It features Boldini’s fanciful paintings made for the art market and depictions of the city around him--from the bustling streets and squares to cafs, theaters, and concert halls--as well as paintings of friends and models, and a selection of later portraits that established him as one of the quintessential portraitists of the Belle poque.

Book Synopsis Modernity and Nostalgia by : Romy Golan
Download or read book Modernity and Nostalgia written by Romy Golan and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Golan argues that reactionary issues such as anti-urbanism, the return to the soil, regionalism, corporatism, xenophobia, and doubts about the new technology became central to cultural and art-historical discourse. Focusing on the overlap of avant-garde and middle-of-the-road production, she investigates the import of these issues not only in, painting, sculpture, and architecture (concentrating on the work of Leger, Picasso, Le Corbusier, Ozenfant, Derain, the Surrealists, and the so-called naifs), but also in the decorative arts, in the spectacle of world and colonial fairs, and in literature. Throughout she finds evidence that artists turned from the aesthetics of the machine age toward a more organic, naturalistic art. This leads her to ask whether the famous and momentous shift of the avant-garde from Paris to New York in 1939 did not, in fact, begin two decades earlier, in 1918.

Book Synopsis Master Narratives and their Discontents by : James Elkins
Download or read book Master Narratives and their Discontents written by James Elkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this bracing engagement with the many versions of art history, James Elkins argues that the story of modernism and postmodernism is almost always told in terms of four narratives. Works of art are either seen as modern or postmodern, or praised for their technical skill or because of the politics they appear to embody. These are master narratives of contemporary criticism, and each leads to a different understanding of what art is and does. Both a cogent overview of the state of thinking about art and a challenge to think outside the art historical box, Master Narratives and their Discontents is the first volume in a series of short books on the theories of modernism by leading art historians on twentieth-century art and art criticism.

Book Synopsis Great Expectations by : Barbara Dayer Gallati
Download or read book Great Expectations written by Barbara Dayer Gallati and published by Bulfinch. This book was released on 2004-10-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sargent's reputation is often defined by his remarkable achievements as a painter of sophisticated society portraits. However, as this innovative examination of his career reveals, he created a significant number of childrens portraits and genre paintings featuring children. The title of the book makes ironic reference to Charles Dickens's famous novel Great Expectations, and is used here to suggest how Sargents paintings of children related to the expectations associated with representations of childhood in the art and literature of Sargents day. The book also traces how Sargent ultimately advanced childhood as an artistic subject. The book contains five essays by three notable curators and professors of fine arts, is illustrated with Sargents truly stunning and often lesser-known paintings of children, and includes Sargent family photographs, some of which are previously unpublished.
Book Synopsis Rivals and Conspirators by : Fae Brauer
Download or read book Rivals and Conspirators written by Fae Brauer and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once the State-run Salon in Paris closed, an array of independent Salons mushroomed starting with the French Artists Salon and Womenâ (TM)s Salon in 1881 followed by the Independent Artistsâ (TM) Salon, National Salon of Fine Arts and Autumn Salon. Offering an unparalleled choice of art identities and alliances, together with undreamed-of opportunities for sales, commissions, prizes and art criticism, these great Salons guaranteed the centripetal and centrifugal power of Paris as the â oemodern art centreâ . Lured by the prospect of being exhibited annually in Salons the size of Biennales today, a huge number and national diversity of artists, from the Australian Rupert Bunny to the Spaniards Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris, flocked to Paris. Yet by no means were these Salons equal in power, nor did they work consensually to forge this â oemodern art centreâ . Formed on the basis of their different cultural politics, constantly they rivalled one another for State acquisitions and commissions, exhibition places and spaces, awards, and every other means of enhancing their legitimacy. By no means were the avant-garde salons those that most succeeded. Instead, as this culturo-political history demonstrates, the French Artistsâ (TM) and National Fine Art Salons were the most successful, with the genderist French Artists' Salon being the most powerful and â oeofficialâ . Despite the renown today of Neo-Impressionism, Art Nouveau, Fauvism, Cubism and Orphism, the most powerful artists in this â oemodern art centreâ were not Sonia Delaunay, Ã0/00mile GallÃ(c), Paul Signac, Henri Matisse or even Picasso but such Academicians as LÃ(c)on Bonnat, William Bouguereau, Fernand Cormon, Edouard Detaille, Gabriel Ferrier, Jean-Paul Laurens, Luc-Oliver Merson and AimÃ(c) Morot, who exhibited at the â oeofficialâ Salon supported by the machinery of the State. In its exposure of the rivalry, conflict and struggle between the Salons and their artists, this is an unprecedented history of dissension. It also exposes how, just below the welcoming internationalist veneer of this â oemodern art centreâ , intense persecutionist paranoia lay festering. Whenever Franceâ (TM)s â oecivilizing missionâ seemed culturally, commercially or colonially threatened, it erupted in waves of nationalist xenophobia turning artistic rivalry into bitter enmity. In exposing how rivals became transmuted into conspirators, ultimately this book reveals a paradox resonant in histories that celebrate the international triumph of French modern art: that this magnetic â oecentreâ , which began by welcoming international modernists, ended by attacking them for undermining its cultural supremacy, contaminating its â oecivilizing missionâ and politically persecuting the very modernist culture for which it has received historical renown.
