Book excerpt: In this beautifully written story set in the north woods of Minnesota, four healthy wolf pups—Leader, Sniffer, Runner, and Thinker—are born one spring. And then one final, undersized pup emerges—Runt. Despite his size, Runt manages to keep up with his brothers and sisters and learn the ways of the pack. But he finds it impossible to please his father, the pack’s leader, and gradually withdraws from the others. When he ventures into forbidden human territory, Runt at last comes to understand his mistakes and to recognize his own worth. Award-winning author Marion Dane Bauer combines her gift for evocative writing with her in-depth knowledge of wolves to create a compact tale that has the power of an epic. Like the best animal stories, it reflects our own world and shows us what it means to be alive. Afterword.

Download or read book Runt and Mumble written by Anton Apperley and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Runt and Mumble: A Tale of Love and War, rats and mice take on human characteristics. They end up having the same dilemmas, but with a political undertone. Runt's gentle demeanor and small stature make him an easy target for abuse by other rats in the horde. Mumble, on the other hand, is an overgrown mouse whose slowness and large girth make her the laughingstock of her colony. A chance meeting between the two outcasts creates an unlikely friendship, as well as the chance for a new life of their own. Although rejected by their own societies, Runt and Mumble's relationship sparks a war between rats and mice as they fight for ultimate control over food and territory. With their lives in danger and their freedom slipping away, Runt and Mumble find themselves in a worse situation than when they first met, and it seems that nothing short of a miracle could help them now.

"He's an athlete," says his father. "He's a goner," says his little brother, Runt. But no one ever listens to Runt -- even after people with seasonal plans and roasting pans begin showing up at Wishbone Farm, or even after the juiciest turkeys are chosen, one by one. Book Synopsis Out-of-order Parallel Discrete Event Simulation for Electronic System-level Design by : Weiwei Chen
Download or read book Out-of-order Parallel Discrete Event Simulation for Electronic System-level Design written by Weiwei Chen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers readers a set of new approaches and tools a set of tools and techniques for facing challenges in parallelization with design of embedded systems. It provides an advanced parallel simulation infrastructure for efficient and effective system-level model validation and development so as to build better products in less time. Since parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) has the potential to exploit the underlying parallel computational capability in today’s multi-core simulation hosts, the author begins by reviewing the parallelization of discrete event simulation, identifying problems and solutions. She then describes out-of-order parallel discrete event simulation (OoO PDES), a novel approach for efficient validation of system-level designs by aggressively exploiting the parallel capabilities of todays’ multi-core PCs. This approach enables readers to design simulators that can fully exploit the parallel processing capability of the multi-core system to achieve fast speed simulation, without loss of simulation and timing accuracy. Based on this parallel simulation infrastructure, the author further describes automatic approaches that help the designer quickly to narrow down the debugging targets in faulty ESL models with parallelism.
