Book excerpt: The nature of time in a nonautonomous dynamical system is very different from that in autonomous systems, which depend only on the time that has elapsed since starting rather than on the actual time itself. Consequently, limiting objects may not exist in actual time as in autonomous systems. New concepts of attractors in nonautonomous dynamical system are thus required. In addition, the definition of a dynamical system itself needs to be generalised to the nonautonomous context. Here two possibilities are considered: two-parameter semigroups or processes and the skew product flows. Their attractors are defined in terms of families of sets that are mapped onto each other under the dynamics rather than a single set as in autonomous systems. Two types of attraction are now possible: pullback attraction, which depends on the behaviour from the system in the distant past, and forward attraction, which depends on the behaviour of the system in the distant future. These are generally independent of each other. The component subsets of pullback and forward attractors exist in actual time. The asymptotic behaviour in the future limit is characterised by omega-limit sets, in terms of which form what are called forward attracting sets. They are generally not invariant in the conventional sense, but are asymptotically invariant in general and, if the future dynamics is appropriately uniform, also asymptotically negatively invariant.Much of this book is based on lectures given by the authors in Frankfurt and Wuhan. It was written mainly when the first author held a 'Thousand Expert' Professorship at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is volume II in a series collecting mathematical state-of-the-art surveys in the field of dynamical systems. Much of this field has developed from interactions with other areas of science, and this volume shows how concepts of dynamical systems further the understanding of mathematical issues that arise in applications. Although modeling issues are addressed, the central theme is the mathematically rigorous investigation of the resulting differential equations and their dynamic behavior. However, the authors and editors have made an effort to ensure readability on a non-technical level for mathematicians from other fields and for other scientists and engineers. The eighteen surveys collected here do not aspire to encyclopedic completeness, but present selected paradigms. The surveys are grouped into those emphasizing finite-dimensional methods, numerics, topological methods, and partial differential equations. Application areas include the dynamics of neural networks, fluid flows, nonlinear optics, and many others. While the survey articles can be read independently, they deeply share recurrent themes from dynamical systems. Attractors, bifurcations, center manifolds, dimension reduction, ergodicity, homoclinicity, hyperbolicity, invariant and inertial manifolds, normal forms, recurrence, shift dynamics, stability, to namejust a few, are ubiquitous dynamical concepts throughout the articles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Vishik was one of the prominent figures in the theory of partial differential equations. His ground-breaking contributions were instrumental in integrating the methods of functional analysis into this theory. The book is based on the memoirs of his friends and students, as well as on the recollections of Mark Vishik himself, and contains a detailed description of his biography: childhood in Lwów, his connections with the famous Lwów school of Stefan Banach, a difficult several year long journey from Lwów to Tbilisi after the Nazi assault in June 1941, going to Moscow and forming his own school of differential equations, whose central role was played by the famous Vishik Seminar at the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics at Moscow State University. The reader is introduced to a number of remarkable scientists whose lives intersected with Vishik’s, including S. Banach, J. Schauder, I. N. Vekua, N. I. Muskhelishvili, L. A. Lyusternik, I. G. Petrovskii, S. L. Sobolev, I. M. Gelfand, M. G. Krein, A. N. Kolmogorov, N. I. Akhiezer, J. Leray, J.-L. Lions, L. Schwartz, L. Nirenberg, and many others. The book also provides a detailed description of the main research directions of Mark Vishik written by his students and colleagues, as well as several reviews of the recent development in these directions.

These include integral inequalities, differential inequalities and difference inequalities, which play a crucial role in establishing (uniform) bounds, global existence, large-time behavior, decay rates and blow-up of solutions to various classes of evolutionary differential equations. Summarizing results from a vast number of literature sources such as published papers, preprints and books, it categorizes inequalities in terms of their different properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 9th Belgian-French-German Conference on Optimization has been held in Namur (Belgium) on September 7-11, 1998. This volume is a collection of papers presented at this Conference. Originally, this Conference was a French-German Conference but this year, in accordance with the organizers' wishes, a third country, Belgium, has joined the founding members of the Conference. Hence the name: Belgian French-German Conference on Optimization. Since the very beginning, the purpose of these Conferences has been to bring together researchers working in the area of Optimization and partic ularly to encourage young researchers to present their work. Most of the participants come from the organizing countries. However the general ten dancy is to invite outside researchers to attend the meeting. So this year, among the 101 participants at this Conference, twenty researchers came from other countries. The general theme of the Conference is everything that concerns the area of Optimization without specification of particular topics. So theoretical as pects of Optimization, in addition to applications and algorithms of Opti mization, will be developed. However, and this point was very important for the organizers, the Conference must retain its convivial character. No more than two parallel sessions are organized. This would allow useful contacts between researchers to be promoted. The editors express their sincere thanks to all those who took part in this Conference. Their invaluable discussions have made this volume possible.

Book excerpt: The term “control theory” refers to the body of results - theoretical, numerical and algorithmic - which have been developed to influence the evolution of the state of a given system in order to meet a prescribed performance criterion. Systems of interest to control theory may be of very different natures. This monograph is concerned with models that can be described by partial differential equations of evolution. It contains five major contributions and is connected to the CIME Course on Control of Partial Differential Equations that took place in Cetraro (CS, Italy), July 19 - 23, 2010. Specifically, it covers the stabilization of evolution equations, control of the Liouville equation, control in fluid mechanics, control and numerics for the wave equation, and Carleman estimates for elliptic and parabolic equations with application to control. We are confident this work will provide an authoritative reference work for all scientists who are interested in this field, representing at the same time a friendly introduction to, and an updated account of, some of the most active trends in current research.
