Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I commend this to the reader and student of Aramaic in hope that this new Aramaic dictionary will help to better understand the Aramaic language .Many Aramaic words have several meanings, as do the words of most languages. There are various English entries for the same Aramaic word in many places,so while the dictionary has over 34,000 entries for each of its two sections, there is approx. half that number of Aramaic vocabulary words in The Peshitta New Testament, from which the Aramaic words are taken. The edition is the same used in The 1979 Syriac Bible and in Online Bible's 1905 Syriac Peshitta NT module (in Hebrew -Aramaic letters).I dedicate this volume to God, Who, I believe, hasspoken each of these Aramaic words and written them to us through His apostles and prophets by His Holy Spirit.613 pages B&W paperback- 4.3x6.9"

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Modern Syriac-English Dictionary, Vol. 1 My interest in the Modern Syriac vocabulary has greatly increased since 1886, when I engaged in the revision of the Scrip tures in Modern Syriac, under the auspices of the American Bible Society. My work began to assume shape in 1893 and 1894 after I had received my appointment at Columbia University, New York. Here I had almost all the apparatus that was needed. In its library are represented almost all of the modern Syriac dialects. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this major reference tool, Jessie Payne Smith has abridged the great two-volume work, 'Thesaurus Syriacus,' by her late father. But her task was not to simply edit down the earlier, massive tomes. She also provided English translations for each entry and additional notations. Her father's dictionary had translated each Syriac word into Latin. The Latin translations made it more internationally accessible; but with the decline of the use of Latin, it decreased in usefulness. Her labors have insured that it continues to benefit scholars and students of Syriac.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This standard lexicon of Syriac has long been the choice of students of Syriac, both for its comprehensiveness and also because of its handy size. It originated as an abridgement of Payne Smith's Thesaurus Syriacus, a substantically larger work that also tends to be less accessible for the student. Here the meanings of the Syriac words are given in English, and the order of the Syriac is alphabetical, to avoid requiring the student to know the root of the word being looked up. An essential tool for anyone studying or researching Syriac texts or literature and for students of the Semitic languages. The Compendious Syriac Dictionary was first published by Oxford University Press in 1903 and has been out of print for a number of years. A quality Eisenbrauns reprint based on the 1976 printing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Syriac is the Aramaic dialect of Edessa in Mesopotamia. Today it is the classical tongue of the Nestorians and Chaldeans of Iran and Iraq and the liturgical language of the Jacobites of Eastern Anatolia and the Maronites of Greater Syria. Syriac is also the language of the Church of St, Thomas on the Malabar Coast of India. Syriac belongs to the Levantine group of the central branch of the West Semitic languages. Syriac literature flourished from the third century on and boasts of writers like Ephraem Syrus, Aphraates, Jacob of Sarug, John of Ephesus, Jacob of Edessa, and Barhebraeus. After the Arab conquests, Syriac became the language of a tolerated but disenfranchised and diminishing community and began a long, slow decline both as a spoken tongue and as a literary medium in favour of Arabic. Syriac played an important role as the intermediary through which Greek learning passed to the Islamic world. Syriac translations also preserve much Middle Iranian wisdom literature that has been lost in the original. Here, the language is presented both in the Syriac script and in transcription, which is given so that the pronunciation of individual words and the structure of the language may be represented as clearly as possible. The majority of the sentences in the exercises -- and all of the readings in later lessons -- are taken directly from the P'itta, the Syriac translation of the Bible. Most students learn Syriac as an adjunct to biblical or theological studies and will be interested primarily in this text. Biblical passages also have the advantage of being familiar, to some degree or other, to most English-speaking students. For many of those whose interest in Syriac stems from Biblical studies or from the history of Eastern Christianity, Syriac may be their first Semitic language. Every effort has been made in the presentation of the grammar to keep the Semitic structure of the language in the forefront and as clear as possible for those who have no previous experience with languages of that family. Syriac is structurally perhaps the simplest of all the Semitic languages. A chart of correspondences among Arabic, Hebrew, and Syriac is given.
