Dedie a P. Bembo, l'un des representants les plus prestigieux de l'humanisme italien, le poeme fut presque immediatement classe parmi les epopees des temps nouveaux: " De nostre temps, Fracastoro s'est monstre tres excellent en sa Syphilis," ecrivait Ronsard. Mais c'est aussi l'uvre d'un medecin. Fracastoro decrit les signes et les remedes de la maladie connus a son epoque, analyse differents modes de transmission de la maladie par contagion, et cree un mythe onomastique promis a un brillant avenir. Le livre que nous presentons ici est le fruit d'un travail associant philologues, historiens de la medecine et medecin. L'introduction situe le nom " syphilis " dans l'histoire des noms de la maladie, dans l'immense litterature medicale consacree au sujet depuis les premiers livres apparus a la fin du XVe siecle jusqu'aux analyses de phenomenes semblables au XXe siecle qui ont reactualise l'interet pour la syphilis; l'ouvrage de Fracastoro est ensuite replace dans le contexte historique et culturel du medecin de Verone, et dans la tradition litteraire du poeme didactique et epique. Le texte latin, etabli a partir des editions faites du vivant de Fracastoro, a fait l'objet d'une traduction nouvelle, abondamment annotee et respectant la double orientation du poeme, medicale et litteraire (c'est ainsi que l'on trouvera in situ de nombreuses propositions de corrections faites par Bembo et Scaliger); outre trois lettres de Bembo adressees a Fracastoro et traduites en francais, le lecteur trouvera en annexe une presentation d'Alfred Fournier, un des premiers grands syphiligraphes du XIXe siecle qui aient montre l'interet du poeme sur le plan medical.
