Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on the synthetic exploratory synthesis of molybdenum chalcogenides and rare earth metal-rich ternary tellurides as a part of an effort to produce molecular building blocks of molybdenum chalcogenide clusters and to explore their structural relationships with solid state cluster networks. The tightly cross-linked Mo3nSe3n+2(n = 2, 3 ... [infinity symbol] clusters and chain compounds react with alkali metal cyanide or cyanide salt mixtures at temperatures of 450-675 °C to yield reduced, cyanide-terminated molybdenum chalcogenide clusters that are thermodynamically stable. At temperatures of 650-675 °C, linear chain compounds M16[Mo6Se(CN)4(CN)2/2] (M1= K, Cs) were prepared from reactions of Mo6Se or elemental starting materials, Mo and Se with excess molten cyanide (KCN, CsCN). These are the first known compounds to feature linking of Mo6Se8 clusters via cyanide bridges. Magnetic susceptibility and EPR measurements indicate that there is one unpaired electron per cluster. A new reduced molecular octahedral complex, Na8[Mo6Se8(CN)6]·20H2O was prepared by the reduction of [Mo6Se8(CN)6]7- with Zn in an aqueous NaCN solution. Single crystal structure was determined. Cyclic voltammetric measurements in basic aqueous media show multiple reversible redox waves corresponding to [Mo6Se8(CN)6]6-/7-, [Mo6Se8(CN)6]7-/8-, [Mo6Se8(CN)6]8-/9- redox couples with half-wave potentials of E1/2 = -0.442 V, -0.876 V, and 11.369 V respectively versus the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). UV-Vis studies support the presence of the reduced cluster compound. New reduced molecular tetrahedral complexes, K--Na[Mo4Se4(CN)12]·5H2O·MeOH, Na4Cs--[Mo4Se4(CN)12]Cl3, Na8[Mo4Se4(CN)12], and Na4K4[Mo4Se4(CN)12]·12H2O were prepared. Preparation of Na8[Mo4Se4(CN)12] is an improved method for the synthesis of the Mo4Se4 core. Half-wave potentials of E1/2 for the [Mo4Se4(CN)12]6-/7-and [Mo4Se4(CN)12]7-/8-couples are 0.233 V, and -0.422 V respectively versus SHE. The molecular cubane clusters [Mo4Se4(CN)12]7-/8-play an essential role in the process by which the discrete [Mo6Se8(CN)6]6-and [Mo6Se8(CN)6]7- are excised from the CN-linked chain compound, K6Mo6Se8(CN)5. A new rare-earth telluride compound with the empirical composition of Gd4NiTe2 was synthesized from a high-temperature solid-state reaction. Gd4MTe2 (M = Ni) crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma. This unprecedented structure consists of a cluster condensation of Ni-centered gadolinium tricapped trigonal prisms along the rectangular faces of the trigonal prism such that the Ni atoms act as two of the caps to the trigonal prisms.

Book excerpt: Over the previous twenty years, ternary molybdenum chalcogenides of the general formula M(subscript x)Mo6Y (M = ternary metal cation; Y = chalcogenide), known as Chevrel phases, have been extensively studied. Many of these compounds have been found to have superconductivity, catalytic activity and ionic conductivity. The rich chemistry of the Chevrel phases raises considerable interest in finding the tungsten analogues of these phases. However, no such analogue has ever been synthesized, although the Chevrel phases are usually prepared directly from elements at high temperatures above 1000°C. The absence of the tungsten analogues may be caused by their thermodynamic instability at such high temperatures. Thus it might be necessary to avoid high-temperature synthetic procedures in order to establish the ternary and binary tungsten chalcogenides. A major focus of the McCarley research group has been on the preparation of M6YL6 (M = Mo, W; Y = S, Se, Te) cluster complexes as low temperature pathways to the Chevrel phases.

Book excerpt: By browsing about 10 000 000 scientific articles of over 200 major journals mainly in a 'cover to cover approach' some 200 000 publications were selected. The extracted data is part of the following fundamental material research fields: crystal structures (S), phase diagrams (also called constitution) (C) and the comprehensive field of intrinsic physical properties (P). This work has been done systematically starting with the literature going back to 1900. The above mentioned research field codes (S, C, P) as well as the chemical systems investigated in each publication were included in the present work. The aim of the Inorganic Substances Bibliography is to provide researchers with a comprehensive compilation of all up to now published scientific publications on inorganic systems in only three handy volumes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject matterofsolid state chemistry lies within the spheres ofboth physical and inorganic chemistry. In addition, there is a large overlap with solid state physics and materials engineering. However, solid state chemistry has still to be recognized by the general body ofchemists as a legitimate subfield ofchemistry. The discipline is not even well defined as to content and has many facets that make writing a textbook a formidable task. The early studies carried out in the United States by Roland Ward and his co workers emphasized the synthesisofnew materials and the determination oftheir structure. His work on doped alkaline earth sulfides formed the basis for the development of infrared phosphors and his pioneering studies on oxides were important in understanding the structural features of both the perovskite oxides as well as the magnetoplumbites. In 1945, A. F. Wells published the first edition of Structural Inorganic Chemistry. This work attempts to demonstrate that the synthesis, structure, and properties of solids form an important part of inorganic chemistry. Now, after almost 50 years during which many notable advances have been made in solid state chemistry, it is still evident that the synthesis, structure determination, and properties of solids receive little attention in most treatments of inorganic chemistry. The development of the field since the early studies of Roland Ward (early 1940s) has been rapid.

This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chemistry of molybdenum is immensely rich and diverse. Molybdenum is essential for life, and has many applications in industry. The first chapter offers a general perspective of the chemistry of molybdenum in high oxidation states dominated by diverse oxo species, such as the MoO22+ and MoO4+ units that are focus of my research. I describe the importance of MoO22+ complexes as models for the active sites of oxo transfer molybdoenzymes (e.g. DMSO oxidase) and for industrial heterogeneous transformation such as the SOHIO process (one of our ultimate goals). I also outline the importance of MoO4+ complexes as procatalysts for metathesis polymerization and as models of deoxygenated active sites of MoO22+ oxygen catalysts that have triggered our interest. The second chapter introduces the synthesis and full characterization of 4-, 5- and 6-coordinated MoO2(OAr)2L0-1 complexes with bulky aryloxide ligands, starting from the MoO2Cl2 or MoO2Cl2(DMF)2 precursors. Steric and electronic modifications in the aryloxide moieties were performed in order to understand their effect in the final structure and yields of the synthesized complexes. The nature and mechanism of formation of the radical species detected in their synthesis is proposed. The third chapter presents the facile synthesis of varios MoO(OAr)4-nCln complexes starting from the MoO2Cl2 precursor. Their mechanism of formation is proposed and the supporting evidence for this new reaction is provided. Steric and electronic modifications in the aryloxide moieties were used to study their structural and electronic effects in the MoO4+ complexes. The fourth chapter outlines the synthesis of Mo(VI) monooxo bisphenoxides with a characteristic cis-chloro cis-bisphoxide arrangement around the MoO4+ unit. Electronic and steric modifications in the bisphenoxide rings were done to determine their effect in the structure and reactivity of the final complexes. The fifth chapter introduces the application of the synthesized MoO(OAr)4-nCln and MoO(bisphenoxides)2Cl2 complexes as procatalysts for olefin metathesis polymerization of norbornene. The correlation between structure and reactivity of the procatalyst is discussed.
