Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the current state of the practice of state highway agencies regarding methods and specifications for using trenchless technologies. From the perspective of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the paramount concern associated with trenchless construction is the safety of the traveling public. Since such construction typically takes place without the re-routing of traffic, any sudden and substantial surface displacement of the overlying roadway has the potential for catastrophic consequences. Surface monitoring during and after construction is a critical activity to ensure successful installation. The study focused on the most commonly used trenchless methods for new construction, including the selection of the most appropriate trenchless technology for specific applications, the identification of minimum geotechnical investigation requirements, design considerations, construction monitoring, costs, and performance. The study did not address all potentially available methods of utility construction and rehabilitation. To achieve the study objective, two tasks were performed: (1) the literature on the current state of the practice with respect to the use of trenchless technology in other states was reviewed, and (2) identified specifications and design guidelines of various state transportation agencies were analyzed and examined for potential applicability to trenchless construction activities administered by VDOT. The study concluded that trenchless technologies have been widely adopted but design guidelines and construction specifications vary significantly. Accurate subsurface characterization is critical to the selection of the most appropriate technology for a specific project. Obstructions pose a significant risk for all types of trenchless work. In general, the risk of using the directional drilling method increases with pipe diameter. The opposite is usually the case for microtunneling. Unguided trenchless methods are suitable only for short drives. Monitoring of trenchless construction is usually limited to observations of installation procedures and surface monitoring. For the most part, a high level of expertise is required for operators of trenchless equipment. The study recommends that VDOTs Materials Division, Location and Design Division, and Construction Division jointly develop and approve the criteria for selection of trenchless technologies. Specific technical recommendations for inclusion in VDOT special provisions and the VDOT Materials Division Manual of Instructions are enumerated. .

Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to geologists; geotechnical, construction, and maintenance engineers; other state department of transportation (DOT) personnel involved with the planning, design, and permit issuance for conduits beneath roadways; local transportation agencies; utility contractors and consultants; and trenchless construction equipment manufacturers. It describes the current state of the practice for the use of trenchless technology for installing conduits beneath roadways. Trenchless construction is a process of installing, rehabilitating, or replacing underground utility systems without open-cut excavation. The synthesis is focused on trenchless technology for new installations. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the trenchless installation technologies (methods, materials, and equipment) currently employed by state DOTs and other agencies to install conduits beneath roadways. The synthesis presents data obtained from a review of the literature and a survey of transportation agencies. For each technology identified, information is provided to describe the range of applications, basis for technique selection, site specific design factors to be considered, relative costs, common environmental issues, and example specifications. In addition, information on emerging technologies and research needs is presented.

Book excerpt: In the past decade, the field of trenchless technology has expanded rapidly in products, equipment, and utilization. This expansion would not have occurred without a strong increase ineconomic incentives to the user. Because theoperating environment has changed, trenchless technology is often the preferred alternative to traditional methods of digging holes and installing conduits. The infrastructure in which we live has become more congested and has to beshared by several users. In addition, the cost of restoring a road or landscaped area after construction may be higher than the cost of installing the conduit. These factors add to the need for trenchless technology-the ability to dig holes without disturbing the surface. In some ways, trenchless technology is a futuristic concept. Ruth Krauss in a children'sbookofdefinitions wrote,"AHole...Is to Dig." But thisstatement is not necessarily true. Today, a hole could be to bore. Trenchless technology is not new. But it certainly has become the buzzword of the construction industry and it appears that it will have a growing impact in the way contractors, utilities, and others install new facilities. Methods to bore horizontal holes were practiced as early as the 18005, but this technology has greatly changed. Today's tools include sophisticated drilling methods, state-of the-art power systems, and electronic guidance techniques. These tools can bore faster, safer, and more accurately, and in many instances more economically, than open-cllt methods. Technology has played an important role in these advances, but economics has become the driving force in making these systems popular.

Book excerpt: The Renewal of Stormwater Systems Using Trenchless Technologies summarizes technologies used for the renewal of stormwater systems, including new, emerging, and underutilized trenchless methods, and identifies future research needs. Both trenchless replacement and trenchless renewal methods can reduce negative impacts associated with surface disruption by moving the work area outside of the travel lanes and concentrating the construction impacts off the roadway. Trenchless renewal can extend the service life of existing stormwater facilities by addressing decay such as corrosion, abrasion, and erosion; reducing or eliminating infiltration and exfiltration; and providing a structural repair or improving the structural capacity of culverts, pipelines, manholes, and related stormwater structures. In some situations, trenchless renewal can even improve the hydraulic capacity of the stormwater system.

Microtunneling is defined as a trenchless construction method for installing pipelines. The North American definition of microtunneling describes a method and does not impose size limitations on that method. The tunnel may be considered a microtunnel if all of the following features apply to construction: the microtunneling boring machine is remote controlled, a laser guidance system is employed, a jacking system is used for thrust, and continuous pressure is provided to the face of the excavation to balance groundwater and earth pressures. This Standard Guideline is a vital reference for owners, engineers, contractors, and construction managers.
