Book excerpt: In many countries irrigated agriculture consumes a large proportion of the available water resources, often over 70% of the total. There is considerable pressure to release water for other uses and, as a sector, irrigated agriculture will have to increase the efficiency and productivity of its water use. This is particularly true for manually operated irrigation systems managed by government agencies, which provide water for a large number of users on small landholdings and represent 60% of the total irrigated area worldwide. --

Download or read book Capacity Development in Irrigation and Drainage written by International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consensus among policy-makers in the developing world and aid agencies is that a lack of capacity is constraining the development of irrigated agriculture. Although this concern is not new, it is now receiving much attention in the irrigation and drainage world, where it is becoming an issue in its own right rather than being embedded in infrastructure investment projects. In order to address this issue FAO Land and Water Development Division (AGL) organized a one-day workshop , which brought together a range of case studies from different parts of the world in order to demonstrate that capacity development should be central focus of future strategies on irrigation and drainage. This publication contains a synthesis of the workshop as well as three keynote papers prepared for the workshop based on the available literature and experiences. The complete workshop materials, which include several country papers and complementary documents, are included on a CD-ROM that accompanies this document

Download or read book Irrigation Management Transfer written by Carlos Garces-Restrepo and published by Fao. This book was released on 2007 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present water report is the final product emanating from efforts by FAO, IWMI and others to document and understand the implications of the irrigation sector embarking on a wide reform process. It is intended to be a knowledge synthesis document that captures the global experiences emerging from a wide-reaching process targeting the reform of the irrigation sector. This study indicates that irrigation management transfer (IMT) is an approach for irrigation sector reform with the potential to improve the sustainability of irrigation systems. The process requires inter alia strong political commitment, negotiations among stakeholders, and long-term capacity development. Irrigation management transfer should not be seen as a process that has a clear "beginning" and "end". While the former can be more easily identified, the latter is much more difficult to determine. In fact, IMT can be the initial stage of an evolving long reform process. The accompanying CD-ROM contains IMT country profiles and case studies, an international IMT e-mail conference, a bibliography and links.--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: It has become a national policy in manu countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. These were only some of the many issues which were discussed in sessions and papers at the Conference. Participants wer alsl able to examine the compelling and distinctive approach of the Chinese for de-collectivization of irrigated agriculture with its relatively elaborate arrangements for incentives and accountability between village irrigation groups and financially autonomous irrigation districts. Since over 110 papers were submitted for the Conference, a selection of papers had to be made. This publication is recommended for policy makers, planners, project management professionals, consultants, trainers, farmer-sponsored irrigation managers and researchers who have an interest in irrigation reform in developing countries. It is believed that these selected papers add significantly to the range of ideas and information about the approaches and results of irrigation management transfer around the world.
