Book excerpt: Necessary conditions are established for the voltage transfer matrix of a transformerless grounded network composed of ideal resistors, inductors, capacitors (RLC), and grounded unity gain amplifiers. These conditions are also shown to be sufficient for realization as the voltage transfer matrix of a transformerless grounded network containing RC and not more than one grounded unity gain amplifier per matrix row. Similar necessary, and sufficient, conditions are presented for transformerless grounded input, nongrounded output networks composed of these same passive and active elements. The grounded input, nongrounded output case requires not more than two grounded unity gain amplifiers per matrix row for its synthesis. In the two-port nongrounded case a special procedure makes it possible to realize the transfer function by the proper connection of two identical threeterminal networks. (Author).

Book excerpt: Active RC networks realizing complex poles and j omega axis zeros have previously required a large number of passive elements and relatively complex active structures. The inclusion of distributed RC lines with lumped RC elements is shown to significantly reduce the number of passive elements and the complexity of the active elements used. An analysis procedure is developed for the analysis of arbitrarily complex combinations of distributed, lumped, and active elements. A model of the RC distributed line is chosen for computer analysis and is shown to give good agreement with experimental data. In order to make the synthesis procedure a simple and practical one, the transfer function to be realized is factored into a product of first and second order factors to be realized individually. The active element utilized is an ideal voltage amplifier, for simplicity, and so that simple cascade connection of the networks realizing the separate factors will produce the complete transfer function. The synthesis of the individual factors is reduced to choosing the appropriate one needed from a set of 4 networks which together realize all of the pole-zero combinations required, and determining the component values necessary to realize any one of the quadratic factors needed from a set of design charts. Any necessary first order factors are then added in cascade, using passive, lumped, RC networks. A specific 5 pole, 4 zero, elliptic function, low pass filter is synthesized by this method. The complete filter uses 2 uniform RC lines, 3 resistors, 3 capacitors and 2 voltage amplifiers, as compared to 7 resistors, 9 capacitors and 2 voltage amplifiers in a lumped active RC realization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two synthesis procedures are presented for active RC common ground networks. The active elements used are practical amplifiers having finite input and output impedances and gain. These amplifiers are more easily realized than are ideal elements such as negative impedance converters, gyrators, and negative resistors. Active RC networks are particularly appealing for use in microcircuits and low frequency applications where inductors are not practical. The two amplifier method allows the synthesis of any real rational voltage transfer function. The single amplifier method realizes voltage transfer functions with poles in the left-half-plane and zeros any place except the positive real axis. A guide for reducing transfer function sensitivity to the active-RC parameter variations is presented. It is shown that by staying near the Horowitz optimum decomposition significant reductions in sensitivity can be achieved. Four important general low order transfer functions are examined in detail for near optimum realization. It is also shown that sensitivity figures for a conjugate pole-pair transfer function obtained by a RLC passive network are not appreciably lower than for an RC-active network. For lowest overall sensitivity figures the passive RC network sensitivities should be considered. Many equivalent RC networks exist for a particular RC function. Since sensitivity is a function of frequency, the problem is to find the least sensitive network at a frequency or frequencies of interest. Guides are provided for selection by worst case analysis and by statistical means. Circuits and response curves are presented for two active filters designed using both synthesis procedures.
