This book was released on 2007 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chemical or electrochemical reduction of the trifluoroacetyl complex CF3COCo(CO)3PPh3 involves a single electron transfer yielding trifluoromethyl radical and an anionic cobalt carbonyl complex. The mechanism is proposed to involve electron transfer followed by initial dissociation of either a carbonyl or phosphine ligand from the 19-electron [CF3COCo(CO)3PPh3]- anion. The resulting 17-electron intermediate undergoes subsequent one-electron reductive elimination of trifluoromethyl radical by homolytic cleavage of the carbon-carbon bond of the trifluoroacetyl group. The CF3. radical can be trapped by either benzophenone anion, forming the anion of [alpha]-(trifluoromethyl)benzhydrol, or Bu3SnH, yielding CF3H. The final organometallic product is an 18-electron anion, either [Co(CO)4]- or [Co(CO)3(PPh3)]-, depending upon which ligand is initially lost. The chemical or electrochemical reduction CF3Co(CO)3PPh3 is a two-electron process involving heterolytic cobalt-carbon bond cleavage to yield trifluoromethyl anion and cobalt carbonyl anions. The trifluoromethyl anion rapidly decomposes to fluoride and difluorocarbene. This carbene may dimerize to form C2F4. The unstable fluoro carbene can also be trapped by cyclohexene. The mechanism proposed for the reduction of C6F5Co(CO)3PPh3 involves a homolytic cobalt-carbon bond cleavage to form C6F5. radical. The resultant C6F5. radical abstracts hydrogen or deuterium from the solvent or trace amounts of water to produce C6F5H or C6F5D. With an excess of reducing agent this C6F5. radical can be further reduced to C6F5- anion before forming pentafluorobenzene by protonation. The inorganic fragment, the 18-electron [Co(CO)3PPh3]- anion, may participate in a ligand exchange reaction to form [Co(CO)4]-. In addition, interesting reactivity was observed between C6F5Co(CO)3PPh3 and tin hydrides, deuterides and chlorides without any reducing agents. We have demonstrated that ligand replacement reactions can be used for the synthesis of new cobalt-NHC complexes with fluorinated alkyl, acyl and aryl ligands. In addition, the X-ray crystal structure of CF3COCo(CO)3PPh3 was obtained to compare the bond lengths and bond angles with other related compounds. An unusual Co-C(acyl) bond length was observed for CF3COCo(CO)3PPh3. Considering the bond lengths of other alkyl and acyl complexes, it can generally be argued that the position of the alkyl/acyl equilibrium varies with the Co-C(alkyl/acyl) bond length.

Book excerpt: This dissertation describes the synthesis and reactivity of tantalum metal complexes containing a tridentate redox-active ligand. Fundamental studies have focused on utilizing the redox-active ligand to store multiple electron equivalents for oxidative addition and reductive elimination reactions. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the characteristics of redox-active ligands and provides an overview of group transfer reactions involving redox-active ligands. The previous published results of bidentate redox-active ligands coordinated to Group IV d0 metals are discussed in terms of their decomposition side reactions. Chapter 2 describes the coordination of a known tridentate redox-active bis(phenoxy)amide ligand, (ONO), to a d0 tantalum(V) metal center and the examination of the redox properties of the resulting chloro oxidation products by electrochemical and spectroscopic methods. Chapter 3 examines the reactivity of the (ONO)TaR2 complexes in the general context of organometallic chemistry with a focus on protonolysis and reactivity with aryl azides, a known source of nitrene fragments upon oxidation. Chapter 4 examines the reactivity of the (ONO)TaX2 (X = Me, Cl) compounds with bulky diazoalkanes, a known carbene transfer reagent. The (ONO)TaCl2 complex proved to be a competent catalyst to generate cyclopropanes from styrene and the corresponding diazoalkane. Chapter 5 explores the utilization of the (ONO) ligand to store electron equivalents for the catalytic nitrene-nitrene coupling reactions with organoazides to afford organodiazenes. Finally, Chapter 6 addresses the electronic considerations of a related redox-active triamido ligand in an effort to tune the ligand's redox potentials.

Book excerpt: For the first time the discipline of modern inorganic chemistry has been systematized according to a plan constructed by a council of editorial advisors and consultants, among them three Nobel laureates (E.O. Fischer, H. Taube and G. Wilkinson). Rather than producing a collection of unrelated review articles, the series creates a framework which reflects the creative potential of this scientific discipline. Thus, it stimulates future development by identifiying areas which are fruitful for further research. The work is indexed in a unique way by a structured system which maximizes its usefulness to the reader. It augments the organization of the work by providing additional routes of access for specific compounds, reactions and other topics.

Book excerpt: Ferrocene—the prototypical metallocene—is a fascinating molecule. Even though it was first discovered over fifty years ago, research into ferrocene-containing compounds continues apace, largely stimulated by their successful applications in catalysis, materials science and bioorganometallic chemistry. Ferrocene derivatives are now recognised as useful starting materials for the preparation of new organometallic complexes and functional materials, efficient catalyst components, as well as redox-active modifiers to biomolecules. Ferrocenes: Ligands, Materials and Biomolecules provides the reader with a background overview and describes recent advances in the development and application of ferrocene compounds, including: synthesis and catalytic utilisation of chiral and non-chiral ferrocene ligands ferrocene-based sensors electrooptical materials ferrocene polymers liquid-crystalline materials crystal engineering with ferrocene compounds the bioorganometallic chemistry of ferrocene Ferrocenes: Ligands, Materials and Biomolecules is an essential guide for anyone working in the fields of organometallic synthesis and catalysis, materials science and bioorganometallic chemistry.
