Book excerpt: Surface organometallic chemistry is a new field bringing together researchers from organometallic, inorganic, and surface chemistry and catalysis. Topics ranging from reaction mechanisms to catalyst preparation are considered from a molecular basis, according to which the "active site" on a catalyst surface has a supra-molecular character. This. the first book on the subject, is the outcome of a NATO Workshop held in Le Rouret. France, in May. 1986. It is our hope that the following chapters and the concluding summary of recommendations for research may help to provide a definition of surface organometallic chemistry. Besides catalysis. the central theme of the Workshop, four main topics are considered: 1) Reactions of organometallics with surfaces of metal oxides, metals. and zeolites; 2) Molecular models of surfaces, metal oxides, and metals; 3) Molecular approaches to the mechanisms of surface reactions; 4) Synthesis and modification of zeolites and related microporous solids. Most surface organometallic chemistry has been carried out on amorphous high-surf ace-area metal oxides such as silica. alumina. magnesia, and titania. The first chapter. contributed by KNOZINGER. gives a short summary of the structure and reactivity of metal oxide surfaces. Most of our understanding of these surfaces is based on acid base and redox chemistry; this chemistry has developed from X-ray and spectroscopic data, and much has been inferred from the structures and reactivities of adsorbed organic probe molecules. There are major opportunities for extending this understanding by use of well-defined (single crystal) oxide surfaces and organometallic probe molecules.

This book was released on 2001-02-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beginning of chemistry as an exact (natural) science - almost 200 years ago - there was a more or less distinct differentiation between its various branches such as organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, or biochemistry. With the increasing insight into the connections and governing laws it soon became obvious, however, that such a clear separation could be regarded as more or less obsolete; within almost any field of chemical research one has to deal with most of the branches mentioned. Especially organic and inorganic chemistry are significant examples for this statement, overlapping considerably within the important field of organome tallic chemistry. This regime of chemistry started its advance with the discovery of dimethylzinc 150 years ago, had a highlight with the introduction of Grignard reagents around 1900, developed further with the start of lithium organyls in 1925 and literally exploded after the discovery of the first transition metal cyclopenta dienyl complex ferrocene half a century ago. The chronological sequence of the important steps, i. e. 1850 (Zn) - 1900 (Mg) - 1925 (Li) - 1950 (Fe), seems rather remarkable. The increasing group of metallocenes is not only of high theoretical and, due to the potential chirality of its members, stereochemical interest, but offers also a wide variety of extremely useful catalysts, especially for stereoselective reactions. The Austrian Chemical Society took this development into account by organizing the Twelfth International Conference on Organometallic Chemistry held in Vienna in 1985.

This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chalcogen-nitrogen chemistry involves the study of compounds that exhibit a linkage between nitrogen and sulfur, selenium or tellurium atoms. Since the publication of A Guide to Chalcogen-Nitrogen Chemistry in 2005, the emphasis of investigations of chalcogen-nitrogen compounds has advanced from a focus on fundamental studies to the development of practical applications, as indicated by the title of this new edition. Pharmaceutical applications of organic sulfur-nitrogen compounds include drugs for the treatment of various diseases, as well as probes for locating tumour cells. From a materials perspective, carbon-containing chalcogen-nitrogen heterocycles have applications in everyday devices such as LEDs and solar cells. A new technology based on binary sulfur nitrides is being used for fingerprint detection in forensic science. As a result, this book includes seven new chapters and updates the others with extensive literature coverage of developments since 2005 while retaining earlier seminal results. This comprehensive text is essential for anyone working in the field, and the four introductory chapters emphasise general concepts that will be helpful to the non-specialist. The treatment is unique in providing a comparison of sulfur, selenium and tellurium compounds. Each chapter is designed to be self-contained, and there are extensive cross-references between chapters.

Book excerpt: During his distinguished career spanning more than 50 years, Nobel laureate (Chemistry) Glenn T Seaborg published over 500 works. This volume puts together about 100 of his selected papers. The papers are divided into five categories. Category I consists of papers which detail the discovery of 10 transuranium elements and numerous heavy isotopes of special importance. Category II papers describe the discovery of a number of isotopes which became the workhorses of nuclear medicine or found other applications. Papers in Category III describe how the chemical properties of transuranium elements were originally determined, how chemistry is applied in nuclear sciences, and other chemical investigations, including early work done with the great chemist G N Lewis. Papers in Category IV cover radioactive decay chains and nuclear systematics. Lastly, papers in Category V illustrate how the powerful methods of chemistry are used to explain nuclear reactions in low, intermediate and high energy nuclear physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Chalcogen Chemistry: New Perspectives in Sulfur, Selenium and Tellurium provides an overview of recent developments, particularly from the last decade, on the chemistry of the chalcogen group elements (S, Se and Te). While up to a few decades ago, chalcogen chemistry was mainly centred on sulphur, in recent years the research based on Se and Te has increased dramatically, and has created huge scope for the use of compounds based on this type of chemistry. The Handbook is organised into two parts, the first of which deals systematically with the chemistry of chalcogens in relation to other group elements in the periodic table. It also includes an overview of metal-chalcogenides and metal-polychalcogenides. The second part reflects the interdisciplinary nature of chalcogen chemistry and focuses on biological, materials and supramolecular aspects of the field. This Handbook gives a comprehensive overview on recent developments over the last decade and is ideal for researchers in the field.
