These applications include photovoltaics, biological sensors, thermoelectrics, electronics, hyperpolarized MRI agents and biological applications. Their application depends on size, which correlates with their physical properties. In chapter 2, a microwave-assisted synthesis was performed and the reaction of the Zintl salt, Na4Si4, or Mn-doped Na4Si4, Na4Si4(Mn), with ammonium bromide, NH4Br, produces small dispersible nanoparticles along with larger particles that precipitate. Allylamine and 1-amino-10-undecene were reacted with the hydrogen-terminated Si NPs to provide water solubility and stability. A one pot, single reaction process and a one pot, two-step reaction process were investigated. Details of the microwave-assisted process are provided with the optimal synthesis being the two-step reaction procedure with a total time of 15 minutes. In chapter 3, a microwave-assisted reaction has been developed to produce hydrogen-terminated Si NPs. The Si NPs were coated for water solubility via two procedures: hydrosilylation producing 3-aminopropenyl-terminated and a modified St©œber process producing silica-encapsulated Si quantum dots. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy was used to temporally resolve the photo-excited carrier dynamics between the nanoparticle and ligand. In chapter 4, a solution phase redox reaction of the Zintl salt, Na4Si4, and NH4Br produced Si NPs and a modified Stober process was used to grow a silica shell on the Si NP surface. "Cold" zirconium was encapsulated into the silica shell for potential applications involving positron emission tomography (PET). In chapter 5, the synthesis of water soluble poly(allylamine) encapsulated Mn-doped Si NPs used as a multimodal probe for biologically related applications has been developed and will be discussed.In chapter 6, the synthesis of dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) of Si NPs for use as hyperpolarized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agents was developed. The nanoparticles are synthesized through a metathesis reaction between sodium silicide (Na4Si4), and silicon tetrachloride and surface functionalized with a variety of passivating ligands.

Book excerpt: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the most powerful noninvasive tools for diagnosing human disease, but its utility is limited because current contrast agents are ineffective when imaging air-tissue interfaces, in regions with low signal-tonoise ratios, or in areas that undergo motion, like the heart and bowel. A technique called dynamic nuclear polarization can be used to hyperpolarize nuclei and achieve dramatic MRI signal enhancement with minimal background noise. It has been shown that ballmilled silicon nanoparticles have the advantageous properties of hyperpolarizability and biodegradability, but in vivo utilization requires the modification of the particle surface to prevent aggregation that leads to very fast removal from circulation through phagocytosis by the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. This thesis describes a method to functionalize hyperpolarizable silicon nanoparticles using silane chemistry and coating by poly(ethylene glycol). The particles were characterized using dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and laser Doppler electrophoresis. The extent of amination was quantified using a fluorescamine assay, and stability was assessed by visualizing flocculation and measuring aggregation in different solvents. The functionalized particles were stable in solutions that resemble physiological conditions. These silicon nanoparticles can potentially be used for in vivo cancer imaging to enable early diagnoses and assist with clinical decision-making through disease monitoring.

Book excerpt: Silicon nanowires, silicon nanorods, and magnetic nanocrystals have shown interesting size, shape, mechanical, electronic, and/or magnetic properties and many have proposed their use in exciting applications. However, before these materials can be applied, it is critical to fully understand their properties and how to synthesize them economically and reproducibly. Silicon nanowires were synthesized in high boiling point ambient pressure solvents using gold and bismuth nanocrystals seeds and trisilane as the silicon precursor. Reactions temperatures as low as 410°C were used to promote the solution-liquid-solid (SLS) growth of silicon nanowires. The silicon nanowires synthesis was optimized to produce 5 mg of silicon nanowires with average diameters of 30 nm and lengths exceeding 2 [mu]m by adjusting the silicon to gold ratio in the injection mixture and reaction temperature. Silicon nanorods were synthesized using a solution-based arrested-SLS growth approach where gold seeds, trisilane, and a dodecylamine were vital to the success. Dodecylamine was found to prevent gold seed coalescence at high temperatures -- creating small diameter rods -- and bond to the crystalline silicon surface -- preventing silicon nanorod aggregation. Furthermore, an etching strategy was developed using an emulsion of aqua regia and chloroform to remove the gold seeds from the silicon nanorods tip. A thin silicon shell surrounding the gold seed of the silicon nanorod was subsequently observed. Multifunctional colloidal core-shell nanoparticles of iron platinum or iron oxide encapsulated in fluorescent dye doped silica shells were also synthesized. The as-prepared magnetic nanocrystals are initially hydrophobic and were coated with a uniform silica shell using a microemulsion approach. These colloidal heterostructures have the potential to be used as dual-purpose tags, exhibiting a fluorescent signal that could be combined with enhanced magnetic resonance imaging contrast. Compositionally-ordered, single domain, antiferromagnetic L12 FePt3 and ferromagnetic L10 FePt nanocrystals were synthesized by coating colloidally-grown Pt-rich or stoichiometricly equal Fe-Pt nanocrystals with thermally-stable SiO2 and annealing at high temperature. Without the silica coating, the nanocrystals transform predominately into the L10 FePt phase due to interparticle diffusion of Fe and Pt atoms. Magnetization measurements of the L12 FePt3 nanocrystals revealed two antiferromagnetic transitions near the bulk Neél temperatures of 100K and 160K. Combining L12 FePt3 nanocrystals with L10 FePt nanocrystals was found to produce a constriction in field-dependent magnetization loops that has previously been observed near zero applied field in ensemble measurements of single domain silica-coated L10 FePt nanocrystals. Dipole interactions between FePt@SiO2 nanoparticles with varying SiO2 shell thickness was also explored.

Book excerpt: The gas-phase kinetics of the decomposition of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) and the formation and growth of silica nanoparticles were studied. The kinetics study was carried out in shock-heated gases with species measurements by high-repetition-rate time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The mass spectra indicate the formation of Si(OH)4 from the decomposition of TEOS while during HMDSO decomposition several Silicon-containing species were found, such as Si atoms, SiO and SiCH3. The ignition-delay time of the precursors in oxygen-containing bath gases was studied by observing the OH* emission signal behind the reflected shock wave. The ignition delay times of TEOS and HMDSO are strongly temperature dependent and the Arrhenius parameters were determined. Silica-particle formation and growth from TEOS and HMDSO were investigated in a hybrid microwave-plasma hot-wall reactor and a low-pressure premixed H2/O2/Ar flame reactor by in-situ and ex-situ measurements. Particle sizes distributions were determined by particle mass spectrometry and the spatial gas-phase temperature distribution was measured with multi-line NO-LIF thermometry. The present research work provides data and new understanding of TEOS and HMDSO decomposition kinetics and particle formation and growth of silica nanoparticles in the gas-phase. These data can be used as input for computational fluid dynamics simulations and hence for the design of reactors for the gas-phase synthesis of highly specific nanoparticles.
