Book excerpt: The use of isopropanol (IPA) as the reaction solvent for the preparation of high molecular weight segmented polyether-urea copolymers based on cycloaliphatic diisocyanates was investigated. Reactivity of IPA with bis(4-isocyanatohexyl)methane (HMDI) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) was studied between 0 and 40 C using in-situ FTIR spectroscopy. HMDI, which has secondary isocyanate groups, shows a very slow reaction with a large excess of IPA at 0 and 23 C. Analysis of the kinetic data indicates an activation energy of 51 kJ/mol for the reaction between HMDI and IPA. As expected, IPDI, which has both a primary and a secondary isocyanate (NCO) group, reacts faster with IPA compared with HMDI, which only has secondary NCO groups. However, the rate of reaction of IPDI with IPA at 0 C is extremely slow (approximately 1% consumption of isocyanate in 60 min) thus allowing the use of IPA as the reaction solvent for polyether-urea synthesis. Preparation of high molecular weight, high-strength HMDI and IPDI based polyether-urea copolymers in IPA has been demonstrated. Thermal analysis and stress-strain analyses were used to characterize the products.

Book excerpt: This dissertation is mainly based on the works of synthesis and characterization of polymer/N-alkyl urea peptoid hybrid materials. Polymers were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using thrithiocarbonate and dithiocarbonate chain transfer agents in controlled manner. Poly(N-alkyl urea peptoid) was synthesized via step growth polymerization using symmetric diamine and diisocyanate. N-Alkyl urea peptoid sequences up to sixmer were synthesized through three steps repetition cycles in good yields. Several different hybrid polymeric materials were explored combining the three different material synthetic strategies including polymer conjugates shown in chapter 2, molecular brushes shown in chapter 3, water soluble A-B-A triblock copolymer shown in chapter 4. Firstly, two well-defined statistical copolymers poly(styrene-co-3-azidopropyl methacrylate) and poly(3-O-methacryloyl-1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-[subscript D]-glucofuranose -co-AzPMA) were synthesized by RAFT. An exemplary N-alkyl urea peptoid trimer was synthesized and conjugated to the two copolymers through the 'click' reaction of the azide pendent group of polymers with the complilanry alkene group at N-alkyl urea peptoid. The polymer conjugates were subjected to further post-modification to generated fluorescent conjugates or water soluble materials. Following the explore of conjugation, N-alkyl urea peptoid was used as comonomer to synthesize linear poly(N-alkyl urea peptoid). The RAFT agent was introduced onto the linear polymer generated by step growth polymerization once again through 'click' reaction. Sequentially, styrene and tert-butyl acrylate was grown from RAFT agents sites that fused onto the poly(N-alkyl urea peptoid) backbone to make block copolymer arms. Upon removal of the tert-butyl groups, the molecular brushes were observed to generate micelles in aqueous solution. The self-assembly N-alkyl urea peptoid was then investigated and conjugated to water soluble polymer poly(ethylene glycol) to produce a A-B-A block copolymer that self-assembled into ribbons in aqueous solution. The final two part of dissertation was about gelling materials studies starting with presenting a synthesis strategy for low molecular weight organogelators (LMOG) using the ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) group functioned N-alkyl urea peptoid. The surprising observation of gelation in DMSO led to extensive investigation of the gelification mechanism studies. Based on the lessons of LMOG, the copolymerization of different T[subscript g] monomers with quadruple hydrogen bonding containing methacrylate was demonstrated suitable to produce polymeric organogelators in the final chapter.

Book excerpt: Biofouling (the colonisation of an interface by a diverse array of organisms) is almost always a problem where it occurs, as it negatively affects surfaces, the materials that they are made from and the structures that they form, and can even destroy them. This comprehensive book covers in detail in its first section the processes involved in marine , freshwater and medical biofouling including coverage of settlement by larvae and spores, biofouling community processes, epibiosis (biofouling on living organisms) and microbial fouling, including biofilms deleterious to human health. The book's second section, encompassing biofouling processes with industrial implications, includes coverage of biofouling on artificial substrata, paints and coatings technology for the control of marine biofouling, biofouling and antifouling in the maritime industries, such as shipping, offshore oil , and aquaculture, and in power stations and other industries. The impacts of both biofouling and biofouling control and details of current legislation of relevance to biofouling issues are fully covered. The book's final section looks at methods for the measurement of biofouling, and future prospects for biofouling, including in-depth coverage of the changes anticipated in biofouling worldwide due to global climate change, and likely future directions in antifouling research, technology and legislation. Biofouling, which includes contributions from many international experts, is an essential reference for all those working in the antifouling industry including those involved in formulation of antifouling products such as paints and other coatings. Aquatic biologists, ecologists, environmental scientists and lawyers, marine engineers, aquaculture personnel, chemists, and medical researchers will all find much of interest within this book. All universities and research establishments where these subjects are studied and taught should have copies of this important work on their shelves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon Based Polymers presents highlights in advanced research and technological innovations using macromolecular organosilicon compounds and systems, as presented in the 2007 ISPO congress. Silicon-containing materials and polymers are used all over the world and in a variety of industries, domestic products and high technology applications. Among them, silicones are certainly the most well–known, however there are still new properties discovered and preparative processes developed all the time, therefore adding to their potential. Less known, but in preparation for the future, are other silicon containing-polymers which are now close to maturity and in fact some are already available like polysilsesquioxanes and polysilanes. All these silicon based materials can adopt very different structures like chains, dendrimers, hyperbranched and networks, physical and chemical gels. The result is a vast array of materials with applications in various areas such as optics, electronics, ionic electrolytes, liquid crystals, biomaterials, ceramics and concrete, paints and coatings ... all needed to face the environmental, energetical and technological issues of today. Some industrial aspects of the applications of these materials will also be presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of nanoparticles into a polymer to form organic-inorganic nanocomposites can greatly enhance the properties of the host polymer. Nanoscale ionic materials, NIMs are new hybrid particles comprised of an inorganic core functionalized with a soft organic shell. Because of the hybrid nature, their properties can be controlled by varying the chemical composition and structure of the core and the canopy. This thesis discusses the synthesis, characterization and bulk and surface properties of a series of new NIMs and NIMs based nanocomposite materials. A new series of NIMs and NIMs based nanocomposites was synthesized. The surface and bulk properties are characterized and discussed in terms of possible polymerparticle interactions by considering a variety of cores (silica and carbon) and a range of polymer matrices (polystyrene, polyethylene glycol, and PDMS-polyurea copolymers). By tailoring the polarity and surface energy between particle-particle and particle-polymer it is possible to control the geometry, size and dispersion of the nanoparticles in the nanocomposites. A simple yet general coating method to plasma treated polymeric substrates is also presented. The method is based on electrostatic interactions between the surface functionalized nanoparticles and the charged substrate and leads to stable and solvent resistant multilayer coatings. The coatings render PP hydrophilic and in the case of PP fabric superhydrophilic. The superhydrophilicity is attributed to the topography and increased roughness of the fabric compared to a planar, smooth substrate. Finally, a series of new PDMS-polyurea segmented copolymers and nanocomposites was synthesized and their settlement and fouling release behavior was evaluated. The extent of microphase separation and the ability of different domains to crystallize affect the surface and bulk properties of the copolymers. By varying the amount of the soft PDMS segment as well as using nanoparticles we were able to develop copolymers and nanocomposites with moduli spanning a range of more than four orders of magnitude. All copolymers and nanocomposites are stronger (in some cases by orders of magnitude) than PDMS. Surface studies using profilometry and AFM show surface nanostructuring due to phase separation with both nano and microscale features. The morphology can be further modified by the presence of fluorinated groups in the copolymer or the presence of nanoparticles in the nanocomposites. Preliminary studies on settlement and removal of sporelings of Ulva show that the critical pressure to remove 50% of the sporelings is at least comparable and in some cases lower compared to a PDMS elastomer. Additionally a series based on mono-, bifunctional PEG segments shows improved settlement behavior of barnacle larvae compared to standard PDMS. These findings are quite significant as the new coatings combine and at times exceed the fouling release performance of PDMS but are much stronger and tougher.
