Book excerpt: Thiophene and benzothiophene ligands containing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) moieties were used to synthesize five and six-membered Pt(II) metallacycles. Ligand scaffolding was synthesized using two methods. The five-membered metallacycles were produced using a coupling reaction, utilizing Cu2O as the inorganic catalyst. The six-membered metallacycles were synthesized using a nucleophilic substitution reaction. The ligands were then metalated using chelate-assisted C-H activation. The synthesis, characterization, and photophysical properties of these NHC-functionalized, cyclometalated products are reported.

Book excerpt: A series of square planar platinum(II) complexes with the mer-coordinating tridentate ligand, pip & sub2;NCN & sup-; (pip & sub2;NCNH = 1,3?bis(piperdylmethyl) benzene) has been synthesized. The lowest emissive excited states of these complexes can be tuned by varying the properties of the monodentate ligand. Colorless halide complexes and the pyridine adduct exhibit weak red emissions originating from a lowest triplet ligand field (3LF) excited state. In contrast, yellow-green emissions from Pt(pip & sub2;NCN)(4-phenylpyridine))+; originate from a lowest 3TT?TT* state. Similarly, (Pt(pip & sub2;NCN))2(mƯL)2+; dimers exhibit emission from a lowest 3LF excited state (L=1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane), a lowest 3TT-TT* excited state (L=trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene or 4,4'-bipyridine) or a lowest triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited state (L=pyrazine), depending on the bridging ligand. A series of platinum(II) terpyridyl complexes with aryl ligands has been synthesized. The complexes undergo two one-electron reduction processes near -0.9 and -1.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl. In the cyclic voltammograms of complexes unsubstituted at the 2 and 6 positions of the aryl ligand, the first reduction exhibits larger (>59 mV) differences between the anodic and cathodic peak potentials than observed for complexes with methyl groups at the 2 and 6 positions. The accumulated data are consistent with the formation of dimers that reduce at different potentials than the monomers, causing the first reduction wave to appear broadened. Protection of the axial sites of the metal center appears to interfere with dimerization. 77 K glassy solution emission measurements confirm that steric effects can be utilized to control intermolecular metalʺʺʺmetal and ligandʺʺʺligand stacking interactions in solutions of these complexes. The first examples of platinum complexes that undergo reversible and cooperative thermal two-electron transfer have been prepared. The tpy ligand of Pt(tpy)(pip & sub2;NCN))+; is tridentate and the pip & sub2;NCN & sup-; ligand is monodentate, bonded through the central aryl group. Cyclic voltammograms of this complex exhibit two reversible oneƯelectron tpy-centered reductions and a nearly reversible two-electron platinum-centered oxidation at ""0.40 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Electrochemical studies of a series of model complexes establish that both potentially tridentate ligands are required for reversible two-electron transfer. A detailed analysis leads to the suggestion that the ligands preorganize around the platinum(II) center, resulting in a 5- or 6-coordinate electrochemically active species.

Book excerpt: Synthetic, structural, spectroscopic, and redox studies of platinum(II) and palladium(II) compounds with mer-coordinating ligands have been undertaken in an effort to better understand the role of the metal and the ligands in controlling d^6/d^8 electron-transfer reactions. A series of Pd(pip2NCN)X (pip2NCNH=1,3-bis(piperdylmethyl)benzene) and [Pd(pip2NNN)X]X (X=Cl, Br, I) (pip2NNN=2,6- bis(piperdyl-methyl)pyridine) complexes are reported. Electronic spectra are consistent with stabilization of ligand-to-metal-charge-transfer states as the ancillary ligand is varied along the ClBr

Book excerpt: Pyridinophanes derived from pyclen are the focus of many studies as biological mimics, chelators, and catalytic precursors. Therefore, the desire to tune the reactivity of metal pyridinophane complexes has inspired modifications that include expansion of ring size and substitutions to the N-atoms. However, substitution on the pyridine moiety is largely unexplored to date. Herein, new synthetic strategies for pyclen-congeners bearing electron donating and electron withdrawing groups are introduced, resulting in doubling the number of pyridine functionalized molecules in literature. Further, the influence of such modifications on properties and reactivity of two metals (Fe(III) and Cu(II)) is described. For the Fe(III) system, 4-substitution of the pyridine ring successfully provides a regulatory handle on the electronic properties and the catalytic C-C coupling activity of the respective Fe complexes. These are the first examples of a structure-activity relationship study with the impact of electronic properties decoupled from structural properties and investigated. The Fe(III) system was also explored in a catalase mimetic study to determine the role of ligand design on the activity of the metal center through changing electronic properties and rigidity of the ligand. Varying the electronic properties of the ligand has a minor effect on catalase activity, but changes to the geometry of the complex have significant impacts on the system. This activity was also successfully observed to cellular models. The Cu(II) system was investigated as a superoxide dismutase mimic. Cu(II) Pyclen complexes, specifically, has been shown to match its coordination environment and to have high binding affinity. My studies highlight that modifications to the pyridine ring of the ligand can tune the redox potential, while exhibiting high binding stabilities and retaining the coordination environment. In fact, one of the complexes studied exhibits one of the highest SOD activities reported to date, which is hypothesized to be the result of not only the electronic properties of the Cu center but also the high binding stability exhibited by this complex. Altogether, this work focused on functionalizing the pyridine ring in pyridinophanes and studying the effect of the modifications on the electronics of metal complexes and their reactivity with both catalytic and potential therapeutic application.

Book excerpt: Classic Magnus' Green Salt and several tetracyanoplatinates represent one-dimensional coordination polymers. They have been examined previously for their unique optical properties and electrical conductivity. Mixed valence tetracyanoplatinates have an appearance and conductivity similar to a metal. Both of these traits are attributed to the close distance between platinum centers in the extended one dimensional structures of these complexes. The aim of this research was to synthesize and characterize a series of new 1D oximes-based platinum complexes with a primary interest in their anisotropic properties. I selected a group of N,O mixed donor chelating ligands with various steric and electronic properties. Therefore, complexes formed are tunable for a particular application as 1D solids. Ten compounds of PtL2 compositions were prepared and used in this study. A visual indication of the formation of the 1D solids with close metallophilic Pt···Pt interactions is in the dark green, blue or purple color of the complexes: Thus, complexes show a charge-transfer band 600-900 nm in the UV-visible spectra. Synthesized Pt-complexes were studied using IR, UV-visible spectroscopy and X-ray analysis. Solutions studies also included dynamic light scattering. Isotopic labeling with 15N of some of the ligands allowed better understanding of their IR and NMR spectra. Four out of ten studied Pt-complexes demonstrated presence of metallophilic Pt···Pt interactions.
