This book was released on 1993 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manuscript describes the synthesis and characterization of novel polymer-ceramic nanocomposites (organoceramics) based on various water soluble polymers and calcium aluminate hydrates. Synthesis of these materials involves the aqueous precipitation of the inorganic crystals in the presence of polymer. The presence of polymer during crystallization often leads to changes in particle morphology, and in some cases intercalation. The organoceramics based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and $\rm CaO{\cdot} Al\sb2O\sb3{\cdot} 10H\sb2O$ (CAH$\sb{10})$ were found to exhibit retarded phase transformation kinetics and unique particle morphologies. Intercalation of PVA between layers of $\rm\lbrack Ca\sb2Al(OH)\sb6\rbrack\sp+\lbrack(OH){\cdot} 3H\sb2O\rbrack\sp-$ occurred during crystal growth, resulting in an organoceramic containing up to 40% polymer by weight. Polymer intercalation resulted in an expression of the interlayer by approximately 10 A, consistent with the formation of a double layer of PVA chains across each interlayer. Thermal degradation of the inorganic and polymeric components of the organoceramic occurred at higher temperatures than the individual materials. Compressive strength of PVA organoceramic powder compacts was significantly higher than that of $\rm\lbrack Ca\sb2Al(OH)\sb6\rbrack\sp+\lbrack(OH){\cdot} 3H\sb2O\rbrack\sp-$ compacts, possibly reflecting substantial differences in particle morphologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook examines the recent advances in the nanotechnology of polymers and ceramics, which possess outstanding mechanical properties and compatibility given their unique physical and chemical properties caused by the unusually large surface area to volume ratios and high interfacial reactivity. This handbook highlights the various compositions and morphologies of polymer and ceramic nanomaterials that can serve as powerful tools for the diverse applications in areas such as electronics, photonics, shape-memory alloys, biomaterials and biomedical nanomaterials, graphene-based technologies, and textiles and packaging. The handbook addresses safety, economics, green production and sustainability. The book contains a section on functionalization of these molecules, which only increases the possibility of developing even more versatile materials that can be fine-tuned for specific applications. Filling a gap in the literature, this handbook provides comprehensive coverage of properties, fabrication, characterization, functionalization methods and applications at both experimental and theoretical models scales. Economic, toxicological, regulatory, and environmental concerns regarding applications are also discussed in detail. Special attention is paid to sustainable approaches that reduce costs in terms of chemicals and time consumption. The book covers research trends, challenges, and prospective topics as well.

Book excerpt: The polycrystalline samples of (Na0.5 Bi0.5)1-xNdxTi(1-x/4)O3 with x=0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06 were prepared by high temperature solid state reaction technique. The formations of the compounds were confirmed by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. A systematic change in crystal structure from rhombohedral to tetragonal to cubic on Nd substitution was observed. The crystallite size and strain in the samples were calculated using Williamson Hall method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis confirms the formation of perovskite structure. The polymer ceramic composites were prepared using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as polymer matrix and Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) as ceramics powder by cold pressing technique. The microstructure/surface morphology of the ceramic oxide samples and composite was analyzed by scanning electron microscope.
