Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Liquid Crystals is a unique compendium of knowledge on all aspects of liquid crystals. In over 2000 pages the Handbook provides detailed information on the basic principles of both low- and high-molecular weight materials, as well as the synthesis, characterization, modification, and applications (such as in computer displays or as structural materials) of all types of liquid crystals. The five editors of the Handbook are internationally renowned experts from both industry and academia and have drawn together over 70 leading figures in the field as authors. The three volumes of the Handbook are designed both to be used together or as stand-alone reference sources. Some users will require the whole set, others will be best served with one or two of the volumes. Volume 1 deals with the basic physical and chemical principles of liquid crystals, including structure-property relationships, nomenclature, phase behavior, characterization methods, and general synthesis and application strategies. As such this volume provides an excellent introduction to the field and a powerful learning and teaching tool for graduate students and above. Volume 2 concentrates on low-molecular weight materials, for example those typically used in display technology. A high quality survey of the literature is provided along with full details of molecular design strategies, phase characterization and control, and applications development. This volume is therefore by far the most detailed reference source on these industrially very important materials, ideally suited for professionals in the field. Volume 3 concentrates on high-molecular weight, or polymeric, liquid crystals, some of which are found in structural applications and others occur as natural products of living systems. A high-quality literature survey is complemented by full detail of the synthesis, processing, analysis, and applications of all important materials classes. This volume is the most comprehensive reference source on these materials, and is therefore ideally suited for professionals in the field.

Book excerpt: The subject of liquid crystals and their use in electronic displays and in non-linear optical systems has become of tremendous importance during the last decade; and the incorporation of liquid crystal units into polymeric materials has led to a group of new materials with diverse properties. Some of these properties have been utilized in new products and some have yet to be used. Much published work has appeared that deals with specific materials or particular applications, and it was felt that a book was needed to examine and explain the underlying principles governing the diverse properties of these liquid crystal polymers, LCPs. The current work describes the diverse nature of LCPs, their synthesis, characterization, properties and finally their applications. It describes the manner in which liquid crystallinity or mesomorphism occurs in small molecules, monomer liquid crystals and polymer liquid crystals. Chapter 1 gives a classification of the various ways in which the meso gens may be connected to the polymer chains. Currently, the bulk of LCP material is based on main chain or longitudinal LCPs for use in engineering applications. The side chain or comb polymers are intended for use in electronics and opto-electronic systems and as surfactants. Many other variants and possibilities exist but their properties have not yet been fully studied or used. In this respect it is hoped that the current work will indicate future possibilities as well as discussing current opinion. v Preface vi Chapters 2 and 3 describe methods of characterizing the mesophases.

Book excerpt: "A series of novel thermotropic poly(ester-imide-ether)s were synthesized by melt polymerization techniques. The imide dimethyl ester: N-[(carbomethoxy) phenyl]-4-(carbomethoxy) phthalimide, prepared in a series of reactions, was reacted with varying ratios of poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol and 1,6 hexane diol to give the copolymers in 56% to 96% yield. The polymers were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, dilute solution viscosity, gel permeation chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and polarized optical microscopy. Inherent viscosity values range from 0.40 dl/g to 1.14 dl/g. Gel permeation chromatographic analysis of the initial polymer series showed number average molecular weights ranging from 32,000 g/mol to 100,000 g/mol. Glass transition temperatures range from -46 C to 44 C. The polymer series exhibit moderate thermal stability with thermal decomposition temperatures exceeding 360 C. Copolymers PEI-1-ET-9 (650) and PEI-3-ET-7 (650) showed no mesophase formation. Copolymers PEI-5-ET-5 (650), PEI-7-ET-3 (650), PEI-9-ET-1 (650), PEI-7-ET-3 (2000), PEI-9-ET-1 (2000), PEI-7-ET-3 (2900), and PEI-9-ET-1 (2900) displayed birefringent monotropic liquid-crystalline behavior."--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Liquid Crystals: Chemistry and Physics, Second Edition relies on only introductory level chemistry and physics as the foundation for understanding liquid crystal science. Liquid crystals combine the material properties of solids with the flow properties of fluids. As such they have provided the foundation for a revolution in low-power, flat-panel display technology (LCDs). In this book, the essential elements of liquid crystal science are introduced and explained from the perspectives of both the chemist and physicist. This new edition relies on only introductory level physics and chemistry as the foundation for understanding liquid crystal science and is, therefore, ideal for students and recent graduates. Features Introduces and explains the essential elements of liquid crystal science, including discussion of how liquid crystals have been utilized for innovative and important applications. New to this edition are over 300 figures, 90 end-of chapter exercises, and an increased scope that includes recent developments. Combines the knowledge of two eminent scientists in the field; they have fully updated and expanded the text to cover undergraduate/graduate course work as well as current research in what is now a billion-dollar industry. Immerses the reader in the vocabulary, structures, data, and kinetic models, rapidly building up an understanding of the theories and models in current use. Begins with a historical account of the discovery of liquid crystals and continues with a description of how different phases are generated and how different molecular architectures affect liquid crystal properties.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A series of novel poly(ester-imide)s were prepared by the reactions of 6,6'-(3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic diimido)-bis-hexanoic acid with various aliphatic diols containing four to ten methylene groups using a melt polymerization technique. Besides these, a novel poly(esterimide) was synthesized by the reaction of 1 1, 1 1 '-(3,3', 4,4'- benzophenonetetracarboxylic diimido)-bis-undecanoic acid with 1,6-hexanediol employing the same technique. Two kinds of monomers containing diimide diacids were prepared by the reactions of 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride with respective 6-aminocaproic acid and 1 1 -aminoundecanoic acid. A total of eight poly(ester-imide)s, PEIMs, were characterized for liquid crystalline properties. The solubility, viscosity, infrared spectroscopy, thermal analyses such TGA and DSC, and the optical studies were performed. Infrared spectra of PEIMs confirmed the formation of imide and ester groups. These poly(ester-imide)s exhibited high thermal and oxidative stability and very poor solubility corresponding to high viscosity. There were no reproducible endothermic or exothermic peaks found besides glass transition temperatures in the DSC thermograms. In addition, no PEIMs showed birefringent textures under the polarized light microscope. DSC and optical study indicated that Odd PEIMs and PEIM(6,10) are totally amorphous, while Even PEIMs are partially crystalline polymers with extremely slow crystallization rate. Two new compounds, BTDI-1 1 A/1 8-ol and BPDI-1 1 A/1 8-ol, with small molecular weight were designed and synthesized. The reaction of respective BTDI-1 1 A and BPDI-1 1 A with 1 -octadecanol was performed in boiling toluene with azeotropic removal of water by using Dean-Stark apparatus. DSC and optical study with polarized light microscopy indicated that BTDI-1 1 A/1 8-ol has a liquid crystalline phase that is very close to solid crystal state, whereas BPDI-1 1 A/1 8-ol has no liquid crystalline property."--Abstract.
