Book excerpt: Short single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) functionalized with carboxylic acid groups were made and incorporated into Matrimid ® to form mixed-matrix membranes. SEM images of mixed-matrix membranes cross-sections showed good dispersion and interfacial contact. Pure gas permeation showed 100% increase in permeability compared with pure Matrimid ®, while the ideal selectivity of O2 /N2, CO2 /CH4 and H2 /N2 remained unchanged. The higher permeability can be attributed to the higher diffusivity in the SWNT.

Book excerpt: Metal organic frameworks are three dimensional porous rigid materials consisting of secondary building units (SBUs), which are inorganic metals linked to organic ligands. While MOFs are fundamentally crystalline and porous solids, polymers can be flexible, malleable, and processable. These absolute differences in the nature of MOFs and polymers have actuated scientists to combine crystalline MOFs and flexible polymers to create hybrids with the necessary characteristics of these various materials in order to be used in many applications such as gas and liquid separation and purification. Research groups have investigated a variety of techniques for MOF-polymer hybrid materials, including the synthesis of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), polymers grafted from MOF particles, polymers grafted via MOFs, polymers driving MOF growth, and the synthesis of MOFs utilizing polymer ligands. For the integration of MOF-polymer hybrid materials, these methods have used a wide range of polymers to generate form factors with specific polymer properties for a variety of applications, including separations, sensing, catalysis, and storage. The development of MOF-polymer hybrid materials with the features of MOFs in a flexible form factor will open the way for these materials to be used in the industrial world. We are attempting a new MMM synthesis in which an initial polymer-ZnO composite material is formed. Subsequent synthetic steps are then performed to convert the ZnO within the composite to HKUST-1 using literature techniques. Our synthetic method aims to remove some of the issuesiithat result from other MMM syntheses. In this project, we were trying to synthesize a polyethyleneimine (PEI)-based composite with ZnO as a platform for generating an HKUST-1 containing mixed matrix membrane. For each sample generated we include a base polymer (PEI), ZnO, a cross linking or curing agent (glycerol diglycidyl ether, polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether) and, in some instances, an agent to control curing rates (4-(2-aminoethyl) aniline, jeffamine (polyetheramines) and sodium hydroxide. The composite films are soaked in an aqueous solution of Cu(NO3)2 followed by soaking in an ethanol solution of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) and dimethyl formamide. Previous studies indicate that the PEI polymer in combination with HKUST-1 should be effective in separations of gas mixtures that contain CO2. Therefore, combining both Metal Oxide-MOFs and PEI polymer will conduct highly efficient CO2 gas separations. This product undergoes SEM, EDS, FTIR, and XRD analysis.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are nanoporous framework materials with tunable pore size and functionality, and hence attractive for gas separation membrane applications. Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs), a subclass of MOFs, are known for their high thermal and chemical stability. ZIF-8 has demonstrated potential to kinetically separate propane/propene in powder and membrane form. ZIF-8 membranes propane-propene separation performance is superior in comparison to polymer, mixed matrix and carbon membranes. The overarching theme of my research is to address challenges that hinder fabrication of MOF membranes on a commercial scale and in a reproducible and scalable manner. 1. Current approaches, are specific to a given ZIF, a general synthesis route is not available. Use of multiple steps for surface modification or seeding causes reproducibility and scalability issues. 2. Conventional fabrication techniques are batch processes, thereby limiting their commercialization. Here we demonstrate two new approaches that can potentially address these challenges. First, we report one step in situ synthesis of ZIF-8 membranes on more commonly used porous [alpha]-alumina supports. By incorporating sodium formate in the in situ growth solution, well intergrown ZIF-8 membranes were synthesized on unmodified supports. The mechanism by which sodium formate promotes heterogeneous nucleation was investigated. Sodium formate reacts with zinc source to form zinc oxide layer, which in turn promotes heterogeneous nucleation. Sodium formate promotes heterogeneous nucleation in other ZIF systems as well, leading to ZIF-7, Zn(Im)2 (ZIF-61 analogue), ZIF-90, and SIM-1 films. Thus one step in situ growth using sodium formate provides a simplified, reproducible and potentially general route for ZIF film fabrication. One step in situ route, although advantageous; is still conventional in nature and batch process with long synthesis time. This limits commercialization, due to scalability and manufacturing cost issues. Taking advantage of coordination chemistry of MOFs and using temperature as driving force, continuous well-intergrown membranes of HKUST-1 and ZIF-8 in relatively short time (15 min) using Rapid Thermal Deposition (RTD). With minimum precursor consumption and simplified synthesis protocol, RTD provides potential for a continuous, scalable, reproducible and commercializable route for MOF membrane fabrication. RTD-prepared MOF membranes show improved separation performances, indicating improved microstructure. Book excerpt: Zeolite membranes have great potential in gas separation applications because of their unique selective properties. The main challenge is in synthesizing defect-free zeolite membranes. In this study, we synthesized silicalite-1 zeolite membranes on ceramic supports composed of Al2O3 and TiO2 using the pore-plugging method. We investigated the effect of the fill-level in the autoclave during the synthesis on the membrane performance. In particular, we were interested in determining the conditions at which the defects' contribution to the total transport is minimized. We adopted and further developed the approach proposed by Carter (2019) to quantify the permeance contribution through defects. Comparing the membrane performance before and after calcination, we proposed several modifications to the original analysis of Carter (2019). Knowing the defect transport contribution, we determined the corrected diffusivity, an intrinsic property of zeolite crystals at a given temperature, of several adsorbed gases on silicalite-1 crystals. The defect's contribution decreased as the autoclave fill-level increased from 94 to 98%. A further increase in the autoclave fill-level introduced more defects and caused the autoclave lid to rupture. Despite the differences in the membranes' performance arising from the autoclave fill-level, the corrected diffusivities of CO2, CH4, and N2 in silicalite-1 showed minimal variation from membrane to membrane. This proves the validity of the proposed characterization method. Moreover, the reported corrected diffusivities are comparable to the literature's values, found using other characterization methods. However, none of the previously used methods is as simple and straightforward as the one we further developed in this study.
