Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the adjustable structure, sizes, morphologies, and variable organic compounds, organic-inorganic hybrid silica have been widely used in both scientific researches and industry applications, such as optical films, adsorbents, catalyst supports, and bio-medical fields. This thesis is based on the synthesis of polyacrylic acid colloids, which is used as a template for organic-inorganic hybrid silica particles and further applications of hybrid silica particles as optical films, especially as functional antireflective coatings. Two main parts are included in this thesis listed below. 1. Self-assembly of polyacrylic acid: morphologies and applications. Polyacrylic acid (PAA) colloids with different morphologies, from compact nanospheres to "core-shell" structure, were prepared by simply adding HCI solution. The change of morphologies and sizes had been detected by TEM and DLS test. The influence from molecular weight and different organic solvents on the morphologies of PAA colloids were studied. PAA/SiO2 hybrid particles were prepared. Mesoporous SiO2 particles could be obtained after removing the PAA templates. 2. Fabrications and characterization of durability silica anti-reflection coating. The as prepare silica particles were used for fabricating enhanced durability anti-reflection (AR) films. The adhesion between nanoparticles in AR film had been realized via a modified CVD method. The morphology and the roughness of AR coating were checked by AFM and the durability was detected by quartz crystal microbalance. The optical properties on glass substrate and PET substrate had been also characterized and the improvement on transmittance could be confirmed.

Book excerpt: The combination of supramolecular chemistry, inorganic solids, and nanotechnology has already led to significant advances in many areas such as sensing, controlled motion, and delivery. By making possible an unprecedented tunability of the properties of nanomaterials, these techniques open up whole new areas of application for future supramolecular concepts. The Supramolecular Chemistry of Organic–Inorganic Hybrid Materials gathers current knowledge on the subject and provides an overview of the present state and upcoming challenges in this rapidly growing, highly cross- or interdisciplinary research field. The book details how these designed materials can improve existing materials or generate novel functional features such as chemical amplification, cooperative binding and signal enhancement that are difficult or not at all achievable by classical organic supramolecular chemistry. It also discusses issues related to nanofabrication or nanotechnology such as the directed and controlled assembly or disassembly, biomimetic functions and strategies, and the gating and switching of surface functions or morphology.

Book excerpt: Synthesis and application of nanoparticles have been often reported by researchers in material science, chemistry and physics. While nanoparticles themselves are well known to exhibit fascinating characteristics. interest in their improvement and promotion is now turning to the hybridization of organic and/or inorganic nano-materials. Although nano-level hybridization is an outstandingly novel and original technique, it encounters many difficulties to achieving the desired industrial application. To thoroughly review the research in this field, this book focuses on the synthesis, characterization and process of nano-hybrid materials, including nanoparticles and ultra-thin films. It elucidates the fundamental aspects of nano-hybrid materials in the synthesis procedure, characterization, and processes with selected examples, from both the basic science and the engineering appications points of view. In fact, this is the first comprehensive compilation of new advances that covers the current status and topics of new synthetic information of nano-hybrid materials composed of organic and/or inorganic materials at the nano-meter level, in one volume. As such, the book provides a unique source of information and guidance for specialists and non-specialists alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with one of the most attractive fields in material science and technology research. In fact, the concept of organic–inorganic hybrid materials is applied to a wide variety of approaches that include materials with inorganic and/or organic nature with respect to their matrices and/or dispersed phase. The present book compiles one editorial and eleven approaches to the topic, and intends to provide a transversal idea about what the field of the so-called organic–inorganic hybrid materials means in actual scientific scenarios. In any case, the role is pointed out of the interphase between the components as the critical aspect to consider, as a way to enhance and understand these components in order to design materials with "tailor-made" organized structures considering the increasing nano-, meso-, micro- and macro-scales.

Book excerpt: In materials chemistry, hybrid systems have become popular because of their enhanced properties compared to their individual components. Organic-inorganic hybrid materials have dual, enhanced chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties of both organic and inorganic materials in a single material and are used in various applications. An enhanced hybrid material has many technical advantages compared to single organic or inorganic materials. These technical advantages and the applications of organic-inorganic hybrid materials have been covered by several scientific papers, reviews, and books. This book, however, exclusively covers hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces based on organic-inorganic nanohybrids, their synthesis and fabrication, and their recent and potential applications in various fields. The book is a good reference for understanding the surface properties of organic-inorganic nanohybrids and also a valuable guide for college/high school, undergraduate, and graduate students and scientists with a background in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, nanotechnology, surface science and engineering, or industrial coatings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of organic/inorganic hybrids has evolved significantly, providing materials with increasing architectural complexities and functionalities. Scientists involved in this field are gradually moving from building materials using a classical molecular approach (e.g. polymerization) to assembling materials on the nanoscale, using a variety of innovative strategies which can vary from the assembly of DNA motifs, to the formation of mesoporous materials by spinodal decomposition, or the use of nanoparticles or oxoclusters as nanobuilding blocks for building complex structures such as nacre-like transition metal oxides. This precise control over the materials architecture also adds functionality to the hybrid materials, whether it is for designing special membranes for phase separation and chromatography or thin films for photonic or magnetic applications. This book presents contributions from researchers worldwide and discusses organosiloxane-based materials; mesoporous materials and films; layered materials; surface and interface modification and characterization; controlled release and biological applications; nanoparticles synthesis and assembly; nanocomposites and new concepts.

Book excerpt: Silica due to its large inorganic amorphous wall and hydrophilic surface properties renders its suitability for designing different varieties of organic,Äìinorganic silica-based materials. Characterization of such hybrid silica-based materials is one of the fascinating as well as challenging topics to be covered. Surface analysis of these hybrid materials can be done utilizing various techniques, out of which X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), 29Si Solid-state Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is the most ideal ones. Thus, before analyzing these silica materials, it requires a massive study on its sample preparation for appropriate characterization of the organic molecules present in the inorganic network. Hence, this chapter will give a brief elucidation of the sample preparation techniques for analyzing the hybrid materials utilizing the above instrumentation techniques.
