Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CETTE THESE CONCERNE LA SYNTHESE D'UNE COMMANDE ROBUSTE GARANTISSANT LA STABILITE ROBUSTE, EN BOUCLE FERMEE, POUR LES SYSTEMES LINEAIRES INCERTAINS. LA STRATEGIE DE COMMANDE UTILISEE EST LA METHODE DE LA COMMANDE LINEAIRE QUADRATIQUE (LQ). LA RECHERCHE D'UNE COMMANDE LINEAIRE QUADRATIQUE ROBUSTE EST ALORS EQUIVALENTE A LA RECHERCHE DE CONDITIONS NECESSAIRES ET/OU SUFFISANTES POUR LA STABILISABILITE QUADRATIQUE DES SYSTEMES INCERTAINS. L'APPROCHE QUE NOUS AVONS CHOISIE EST UNE APPROCHE TEMPORELLE DE TYPE LYAPUNOV. LA REPRESENTATION CONSIDEREE DES SYSTEMES SE SITUE DANS L'ESPACE D'ETAT. DURANT NOTRE ETUDE, NOUS CONSIDERONS LE CAS OU L'INCERTITUDE EST DU TYPE DIT INCERTITUDE BORNEE EN VALEUR. NOUS AVONS EXPOSE L'ANALYSE DE LA ROBUSTESSE D'UNE COMMANDE LQ ET LES LIMITES DE SES PROPRIETES DE ROBUSTESSE EN PRESENCE DES PERTURBATIONS. NOUS AVONS DONNE DES CONDITIONS SUFFISANTES POUR QUE LA COMMANDE, CALCULEE POUR LE MODELE NOMINAL, TOLERE UN TEL TYPE DE PERTURBATION. EN SUITE, NOUS AVONS ETABLIT UNE METHODE DE SYNTHESE DE REGULATEURS ROBUSTES PAR RETOUR D'ETAT. LORSQUE LES VARIABLES D'ETAT NE SONT PAS CONNUES, NOUS ESTIMONS CES VARIABLES PAR UN OBSERVATEUR BASE SUR LE MODELE NOMINAL. LE GAIN DE CET OBSERVATEUR EST CALCULE EN TENANT COMPTE DE L'INCERTITUDE. CETTE ETUDE A ETE ETABLIE AUSSI BIEN POUR LES SYSTEMES A TEMPS CONTINU QUE POUR LES SYSTEMES A TEMPS DISCRET.

Book excerpt: CETTE THESE S'INSCRIT DANS LA MOUVANCE DES TRAVAUX RELATIFS A LA SYNTHESE DE LOIS DE COMMANDES ROBUSTES PERMETTANT DE CONFERER AU SYSTEME COMMANDE UN CERTAIN NIVEAU DE PERFORMANCE. ON CONSIDERE ESSENTIELLEMENT DES SYSTEMES LINEAIRES DECRITS DANS L'ESPACE D'ETAT ET SOUMIS A DES INCERTITUDES PARAMETRIQUES. LA ROBUSTESSE EN STABILITE EST ENVISAGEE A RAVERS LE CONCEPT DE STABILISABILITE QUADRATIQUE. LA PERFORMANCE QUANT A ELLE EST ABORDEE DANS DEUX DIRECTIONS. LA PREMIERE EST UNE GENERALISATION AU CAS DES SYSTEMES INCERTAINS DU PROBLEME DE REJET DE PERTURBATION H#2. IL S'AGIT DE MINIMISER UNE BORNE SUPERIEURE DE LA NORME H#2 DE LA MATRICE DE TRANSFERT ENTRE UNE PERTURBATION EXOGENE ET UNE SORTIE CONTROLEE. LA LOI DE COMMANDE OBTENUE EST QUALIFIEE, DANS CE CAS, DE COMMANDE A COUT GARANTI. LA DEUXIEME EST FONDEE SUR LE PLACEMENT DE POLES. EN PRESENCE DE L'INCERTITUDE, ET CONTRAIREMENT AU CAS DES SYSTEMES PARFAITEMENT CONNU, UNE LOCALISATION DES POLES NE PEUT SE FAIRE QUE DANS UNE REGION DU PLAN COMPLEXE ET NON EN DES POINTS BIEN DEFINIS. POUR DES RAISONS D'EFFICACITE, MAIS AUSSI LIEES A DES ASPECTS PUREMENT PRATIQUES, LA REGION DE PLACEMENT CHOISIE EST UN DISQUE. SONT ALORS DEVELOPPEES DES TECHNIQUES PERMETTANT DE LOCALISER LES POLES DANS UN DISQUE, TECHNIQUES VALABLES AUSSI BIEN POUR LES SYSTEMES A TEMPS CONTINU QU'A TEMPS DISCRET. EN OUTRE, LORSQUE LE SYSTEME PRESENTE EN PLUS DE L'INCERTITUDE PARAMETRIQUE, UNE INCERTITUDE LIEE AUX DYNAMIQUES RAPIDES NEGLIGEES, LE PROBLEME DE ROBUSTESSE EN PERFORMANCE EST ABORDE A TRAVERS L'UTILISATION DE LA MODELISATION SOUS FORME DE SYSTEMES SINGULIEREMENT PERTURBES INCERTAINS. L'EFFICACITE DES CONCEPTS ET DES OUTILS NUMERIQUES PRESENTES DANS CETTE THESE EST MISE EN EVIDENCE SUR DEUX APPLICATIONS : LA COMMANDE D'UN BRAS MANIPULATEUR SOUPLE ET LA SYNTHESE D'UNE LOI DE PILOTAGE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CE TRAVAIL TRAITE DE LA RECHERCHE DE PERFORMANCES POUR LES SYSTEMES MULTIVARIABLES A MODELES D'ETAT LINEAIRES INCERTAINS ET UTILISE LE CONCEPT DE D-STABILITE ROBUSTE.

Book excerpt: "The applied research indicates that, to improve awareness, park education programs should be targeted specifically to the user groups primarily through outreach programs. Further, the Park's management programs should be highlighted, particularly the beneficial, tangible products and services (benefits) the Park provides to each user group... The closer the tie between reef conditions and business earnings, the greater the users' support for reef conservation." Coral reefs are sometimes referred to as "canaries of the sea" because of their early warning ability to show near-shore oceanic stress. Because of their biological diversity, they are also called "rainforests of the sea." Coral reefs are vital to the well being of millions of people. Coral reef managers and government officials trying to save their valuable national resources have turned to research on coral reefs for help. The research presented in this publication merits a great deal of notice because the output is useful for decision support and training tools in integrated coastal zone management (ICZM). The work on cost-effectiveness analysis has developed integrated economic and ecological models, relying extensively on fuzzy logic procedures to model impacts and effects of interventions within the reef environment. By contrast, the marine system valuation work provides economic valuations of coral reefs, demonstrating the use of different modeling methods and treating key policy issues within this context. This publication will interest coastal zone experts and managers worldwide

Book excerpt: Positive Polynomials in Control originates from an invited session presented at the IEEE CDC 2003 and gives a comprehensive overview of existing results in this quickly emerging area. This carefully edited book collects important contributions from several fields of control, optimization, and mathematics, in order to show different views and approaches of polynomial positivity. The book is organized in three parts, reflecting the current trends in the area: 1. applications of positive polynomials and LMI optimization to solve various control problems, 2. a mathematical overview of different algebraic techniques used to cope with polynomial positivity, 3. numerical aspects of positivity of polynomials, and recently developed software tools which can be employed to solve the problems discussed in the book.

Book excerpt: A multi-country research initiative to understand poverty from the eyes of the poor, the Voices of the Poor project was undertaken to inform the World Bank's activities and the upcoming World Development Report 2000/01. The research findings are being published in three books: "Can Anyone Hear Us?" gathers the voices of over 40,000 poor women and men in 50 countries from the World Bank's participatory poverty assessments (Deepa Narayan, Raj Patel, Kai Schafft, Anne Rademacher, and Sarah Koch-Schulte, authors). "Crying Out for Change" pulls together new field work conducted in 1999 in 23 countries (Deepa Narayan, Robert Chambers, Meera Shah, and Patti Petesch, authors). "From Many Lands" offers regional patterns and country case-studies (Deepa Narayan and Patti Petesch, editors). Voices of the Poor marks the first time such an exercise has been undertaken in so many developing countries and transition economies around the world. It provides a unique and detailed picture of the life of the poor and explains the constraints poor people face to escape from poverty in a way that more traditional survey techniques do not capture well. Each of the three volumes demonstrates the importance of voice and power in poor people's definition of poverty. Voices of the Poor concludes that we need to expand our conventional views of poverty which focus on income expenditure, education, and health to include measures of voice and empowerment.

Book excerpt: We live in turbulent times with continents and nations facing ever-heightening risks such as natural disasters, intense and protracted conflicts, terrorism, corporate crises, cyber threats to infrastructures and mega-events. We are witnessing the rise of mega-crises and a new class of adversity with many unknowns. The prospect of mega-crises presents professionals and students in the field of crisis management with four major tasks. First, they should engage in “deep thinking” about the causes of the increasing occurrence of mega-crises. Second, they should identify and work through the dominant trends which complicate contemporary crisis management. Third, they should upgrade institutional crisis management capacity. Fourth, they should improve societal resilience since no institutional complex can mitigate or manage these mega-crisis on its own. This book is divided into four primary parts, each of which looks at one facet of mega-crises. Part I focuses on the concept of a mega-crisis and mega-crisis management; Part II examines crisis management of mega-natural disasters; Part III evaluates crisis management of man-made mega-crises; and Part IV identifies mega-threats and vulnerabilities. Additional major topics include Hurricane Katrina; Hurricane Gustav; the London Bombings; the Mumbai Terrorist Attacks of July 7, 2005; corporate meltdowns; the subprime crisis; the Olympic Games; electricity grids; global climate change; the Dutch Delta; risks to food security; and mega-crises and the Internet. This comprehensive text will provide practitioners and academics with the results of an across-the-board research effort in the prospects, nature, characteristics, and the effects of mega-crises.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A fascinating look at how consumers perceive logos, ads, commercials, brands, and products.”—Time How much do we know about why we buy? What truly influences our decisions in today’s message-cluttered world? In Buyology, Martin Lindstrom presents the astonishing findings from his groundbreaking three-year, seven-million-dollar neuromarketing study—a cutting-edge experiment that peered inside the brains of 2,000 volunteers from all around the world as they encountered various ads, logos, commercials, brands, and products. His startling results shatter much of what we have long believed about what captures our interest—and drives us to buy. Among the questions he explores: • Does sex actually sell? • Does subliminal advertising still surround us? • Can “cool” brands trigger our mating instincts? • Can our other senses—smell, touch, and sound—be aroused when we see a product? Buyology is a fascinating and shocking journey into the mind of today's consumer that will captivate anyone who's been seduced—or turned off—by marketers' relentless attempts to win our loyalty, our money, and our minds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In full generality, minimizing a polynomial function over a closed semi-algebraic set requires complex mathematical equations. This book explains recent developments from singularity theory and semi-algebraic geometry for studying polynomial optimization problems. Classes of generic problems are defined in a simple and elegant manner by using only the two basic (and relatively simple) notions of Newton polyhedron and non-degeneracy conditions associated with a given polynomial optimization problem. These conditions are well known in singularity theory, however, they are rarely considered within the optimization community.Explanations focus on critical points and tangencies of polynomial optimization, Hölderian error bounds for polynomial systems, Frank-Wolfe-type theorem for polynomial programs and well-posedness in polynomial optimization. It then goes on to look at optimization for the different types of polynomials. Through this text graduate students, PhD students and researchers of mathematics will be provided with the knowledge necessary to use semi-algebraic geometry in optimization.
