Book Synopsis Transforming Power by : Seth Kreisberg
Download or read book Transforming Power written by Seth Kreisberg and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about power -- power in the classroom, in our schools, and in our society. Schools, teachers, students, and teaching exist in a churning cauldron of interrelated institutions and social forces. Power relations in schools reflect these larger societal forces and the interconnections of our institutions. This book is also about empowerment -- the empowerment of teachers and students. It explores the process through which people develop more control over their lives and acquire the skills and dispositions necessary to be critical and effective participants in our society. The heart of this book, and Kreisberg's unique contribution to the empowerment literature, is his elucidation of the difference between power over and power with in his search to understand the nature of power that can empower individuals and communities. Kreisberg draws upon educational, political, feminist, and psychological theory, and, especially, the voices of teachers, in his framing of the question: What are the dynamics of power that we as teachers can create in our relationships with our students that will be empowering for both our students and ourselves?

Download or read book The Science of Synthesis written by Debora Hammond and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debora Hammond's The Science of Synthesis explores the development of general systems theory and the individuals who gathered together around that idea to form the Society for General Systems Research. In examining the life and work of the SGSR's five founding members-Ludwig von Bertalanffy, Kenneth Boulding, Ralph Gerard, James Grier Miller, and Anatol Rapoport-Hammond traces the emergence of systems ideas across a broad range of disciplines in the mid-twentieth century. Both metaphor and framework, the systems concept as articulated by its earliest proponents highlights relationship and interconnectedness among the biological, ecological, social, psychological, and technological dimensions of our increasingly complex lives. Seeking to transcend the reductionism and mechanism of classical science-which they saw as limited by its focus on the discrete, component parts of reality-the general systems community hoped to complement this analytic approach with a more holistic orientation. As one of many systems traditions, the general systems group was specifically interested in fostering collaboration and integration among different disciplinary perspectives, with an emphasis on nurturing more participatory and truly democratic forms of social organization. The Science of Synthesis documents a unique episode in the history of modern thought, one that remains relevant today. This book will be of interest to historians of science, system thinkers, scholars and practitioners in the social sciences, management, organization development and related fields, as well as the general reader interested in the history of ideas that have shaped critical developments in the second half of the twentieth century.

Book Synopsis Complex Interpersonal Conflict Behaviour by : Evert Van der Vliert
Download or read book Complex Interpersonal Conflict Behaviour written by Evert Van der Vliert and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-24 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about reactions to interpersonal conflict such as avoiding, negotiating, and fighting. It breaks away from the prevailing assumption that conflict behaviours are mutually isolated reactions having mutually isolated effects. Instead, reactions are viewed as components of complex conflict behaviour that influence each other's impact on the substantive and relational outcomes. The simultaneous and sequential occurrence of, for example, problem solving and fighting should therefore be studied together and not separately. The author presents a ladder of stepwise increases in theoretical quality, and designs the sequence of chapters in such a way that the theoretical value increases step by step. The lower steps lead to the description of behavioural components and to a model of integrative and distributive dimensions. The upper steps lead to the dimensions of dual concern for one's own and the other's goals and to complexity explanations in terms of the novel paradigm of conglomerated conflict behaviour. The chapters are summarised into thirty-four interrelated propositions. Six empirical studies demonstrate the validity of crucial propositions at each level of the theoretical framework. This monograph primarily reaches out to an academic readership. However, due to its clear structure, its comprehensive propositions, its frequent use of figures, and its glossary, the book will also provide an invaluable resource for any student and practitioner interested in conflict management and negotiation.

Book Synopsis Students as Real People by : Robert T. Anderson
Download or read book Students as Real People written by Robert T. Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-13 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A teacher of communication expresses his concern for thousands of students who are cheating themselves out of a worthwhile education by falling into the accepted role of “nonperson” uninvolved in the education process. In this book, the author fosters a belief that success or failure in college depends on communication—“interdependent efforts of people in a relationship to generate common meaning.” He proposes to get students to realize that their education is something other students can help them develop, as much as teachers. The author uses a personal style of writing to talk with the students. He uses examples from the students’ immediate campus environment in challenging them to question their roles in the educational process. Written for and tested in interpersonal communication courses, the book is also appropriate for teacher education courses, “orientation to college life” courses, and for college counseling centers.
Book Synopsis Strategies Against Violence by : Israel W. Charny
Download or read book Strategies Against Violence written by Israel W. Charny and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What would you do to advance the cause of peace in this mad world?" An outstanding group of professionals in psychology, psychiatry, sociology, political science, law, education, journalism, philosophy, and the arts answer this question, working with the concepts and tools of their fields to build a plan or model for behaviours that are likely to advance man toward peace and nonviolent change. They provide a rich sampling of the new ideas for human life that are needed if we are, in fact, ever to evolve into a more peaceful species. The book grew out of a series of sessions organized and chaired by Israel Charny at the annual meetings of the American Ortho-psychiatric Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The contributions are organized around three themes: the person, the community and the culture, and the world. Topics include a model for nonviolent strength to counter aggression by others; an examination of the psychology of Adolph Eichmann, with some startling conclusions about how men should cultivate their normal aggressive emotions and enjoy fantasies of violence; how the American democratic process can be turned unknowingly toward disastrous collective violence; and the problem of reducing the contagion of violence spread by daily newscasts of violent events.

Book Synopsis Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life by : Marshall B. Rosenberg
Download or read book Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life written by Marshall B. Rosenberg and published by PuddleDancer Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 5,000,000 COPIES SOLD WORLDWIDE • TRANSLATED IN MORE THAN 35 LANGUAGES What is Violent Communication? If "violent" means acting in ways that result in hurt or harm, then much of how we communicate—judging others, bullying, having racial bias, blaming, finger pointing, discriminating, speaking without listening, criticizing others or ourselves, name-calling, reacting when angry, using political rhetoric, being defensive or judging who's "good/bad" or what's "right/wrong" with people—could indeed be called "violent communication." What is Nonviolent Communication? Nonviolent Communication is the integration of four things: • Consciousness: a set of principles that support living a life of compassion, collaboration, courage, and authenticity • Language: understanding how words contribute to connection or distance • Communication: knowing how to ask for what we want, how to hear others even in disagreement, and how to move toward solutions that work for all • Means of influence: sharing "power with others" rather than using "power over others" Nonviolent Communication serves our desire to do three things: • Increase our ability to live with choice, meaning, and connection • Connect empathically with self and others to have more satisfying relationships • Sharing of resources so everyone is able to benefit
