The impact of the Internet and other technological advances are constantly referred to at most junctures of today's Communication research agendas. The area of Political Communication is not immune to this trend. Book Synopsis Social Media and Civic Engagement by : Scott P. Robertson
Download or read book Social Media and Civic Engagement written by Scott P. Robertson and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social media platforms are the latest manifestation in a series of sociotechnical innovations designed to enhance civic engagement, political participation, and global activism. While many researchers started out as optimists about the promise of social media for broadening participation and enhancing civic engagement, recent events have tempered that optimism. As this book goes to press, Facebook is fighting a battle over the massive disclosure of user information during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, social analytics company Cambridge Analytica is being revealed as a major player in micro profiling voters in that same election, bots and fake news factories are undermining democratic discourse via social media worldwide, and the president of the United States is unnerving the world as a stream-of-consciousness Twitter user. This book is a foundational review of current research on social media and civic engagement organized in terms of history, theory, practice, and challenges. History reviews how researchers and developers have continuously pushed the envelope to explore technology enhancements for political and social discourse. Theory reveals that the use of globally-networked social technologies touches many fields including political science, sociology, psychology, media studies, network science, and more. Practice is examined through studies of political engagement both in democratic situations and in confrontational situations. Challenges are identified in order to find ways forward. For better or worse, social media for civic engagement has come of age. Citizens, politicians, and activists are utilizing social media in innovative ways, while bad actors are discovering possibilities for spreading dissension and undermining trust. We are at a sobering inflection point, and this book is your foundation for understanding how we got here and where we are going.

Book Synopsis Networking Argument by : Carol Winkler
Download or read book Networking Argument written by Carol Winkler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume presents selected works from the 20th Biennial Alta Argumentation Conference, sponsored by the National Communication Association and the American Forensics Association and held in 2017. The conference brought together scholars from Europe, Asia, and North America to engage in intensive conversations about how argument functions in our increasingly networked society. The essays discuss four aspects of networked argument. Some examine arguments occurring in online networks, seeking to both understand and respond more effectively to the acute changes underway in the information age. Others focus on offline networks to identify historical and contemporary resources available to advocates in the modern day. Still others discuss the value-added of including argumentation scholars on interdisciplinary research teams analyzing a diverse range of subjects, including science, education, health, law, economics, history, security, and media. Finally, the remainder network argumentation theories explore how the interactions between and among existing theories offer fruitful ground for new insights for the field of argumentation studies. The wide range of disciplinary backgrounds and methodological approaches employed in Networking Argument make this volume a unique compilation of perspectives for understanding urgent and sustaining issues facing our society.
Book Synopsis Civic Engagement and Technical Communication by : James M. Dubinsky
Download or read book Civic Engagement and Technical Communication written by James M. Dubinsky and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue on civic engagement and technical communication focuses on the ways educators can help students become actively engaged members of society, particularly a "rhetorical democracy." The first essay examines the concept of community as a locus for civic engagement and question some of the definitions of community seen embedded in current pedagogical practices. The next article seeks to shape understanding of practice. The tension of developing students' civic awareness and engagement is the topic of the third paper. The fourth article helps students gain skills and organization awareness and improves the perceived relevance of the work. The final two essays approach the issue of civic engagement from slightly different angles--one examining the role of teacher as both rhetor and instructor and the other looking to the past for possible solutions for the future. By continuing the conversation about the relationship between technical communication and the public good and focusing specifically on pedagogical strategies and their theoretical and historical underpinnings, the authors in this special issue clarify roles that technical communication and technical communicators play in civil society, as well as ways curricula can be shaped to prepare students to fill those roles.

They address topics related to service learning, social movements, political socialization, civil society, and especially volunteerism. Book Synopsis Rhetorical Democracy by : Gerard Hauser
Download or read book Rhetorical Democracy written by Gerard Hauser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-07-16 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection presents theoretical, critical, applied, and pedagogical questions and cases of publics and public spheres, examining these contexts as sources and sites of civic engagement. Reflecting the current state of rhetorical theory and research, the contributions arise from the 2002 conference proceedings of the Rhetoric Society of America (RSA). The collected essays bring together rhetoricians of different intellectual stripes in a multi-traditional conversation about rhetoric's place in a democracy. In addition to the wide variety of topics presented at the RSA conference, the volume also includes the papers from the President's Panel, which addressed the rhetoric surrounding September 11, 2001, and its aftermath. Other topics include the rhetorics of cyberpolitical culture, race, citizenship, globalization, the environment, new media, public memory, and more. This volume makes a singular contribution toward improving the understanding of rhetoric's role in civic engagement and public discourse, and will serve scholars and students in rhetoric, political studies, and cultural studies.
Book Synopsis Civic Participation in Contentious Politics by : Dan Mercea
Download or read book Civic Participation in Contentious Politics written by Dan Mercea and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-17 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the highly dynamic communication ecology of recent contentious politics and its expanding digital footprint. First, it looks at the attainment of democratic citizenship through practice as street protests attract substantial numbers of followers who narrate their involvement or reflect on the claims and the implications of collective action on social media. Secondly, it considers the ramifications for contemporary democracy arising from the large-scale uptake of social media by variegated protest networks, which no longer pivot on the coordination capacity of bureaucratic movement organizations. The book ties these aspects together to propose that contentious politics can be a fertile ground for progressive civic participation.
Book Synopsis Mobile Media, Political Participation, and Civic Activism in Asia by : Ran Wei
Download or read book Mobile Media, Political Participation, and Civic Activism in Asia written by Ran Wei and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how personalized content and the inherent networked nature of the mobile media could and do lead to positive externalities in social progress in Asian societies. Empirical studies that examine uses of the mobile phone and apps (voice mailing, SMS, mobile social media, mobile Weibo, mobile WeChat, etc.) are featured as a response to calls for theorization of the mobile media's efficacy as a tool for citizen engagement and participation in civic and political affairs, especially in the search for collective solutions to widespread social problems of food safety, pollution, government corruption, and public health risks. Considering the vast cultural diversity of Asian societies that are shaped by different levels of political, social, economic, and religious development, the book offers nuanced studies that provide in-depth analysis of the mobile media and political communication in a variety of communities of leading Asian countries. From the country-specific studies, broad themes and enduring concepts emerge.
