Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry contains the proceedings of the First European Symposium on Time-of-flight Mass Spectrometry held at the University of Salford in the UK on July 3-5, 1967. The papers focus on time-of-flight mass spectrometry and its chemical applications, from flash photolysis and pyrolysis reactions to shock wave reactions and high-temperature studies of inorganic solids. This book is comprised of nine chapters and opens with an introduction to the MA-1 and other time-of-flight mass spectrometers, followed by their applications to studies of chemical reactions such as flash photolysis and pyrolysis reactions, reactions involving shock waves, and high-temperature studies of inorganic solids. Subsequent chapters explore fast recording techniques for time-resolved mass spectrometry; detection of the NH2 free radical and other ammoniacal complexes in the electrical discharge decomposition of ammonia gas; and reactions of ions with molecules in the gas phase and the sputtering of solid surfaces by ion bombardment. The use of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer in experimental investigations of negative ions is also described. This monograph will be a valuable resource for users of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer and allow non-users to become acquainted with its applications and advantages.

Book excerpt: In this book, the proceedings of the Third European Symposium on "Analysis of Organic Micropollutants in Water", held in Oslo (Norway), from 19 to 21 September 1983, are presented. The symposium was organized within the framework of the Concerted Ac tion COST 64b bis *, which has the same name and is included in the Third R&D Programme on Environment of the Commission of the European Communi ties - Indirect and Concerted Actions - 1981 to 1985. The aim of the symposium was to review the progress and results achiev ed during the past two years, since the Second symposium, held in Killarney (Ireland) in November 1981. The programme of the symposium consisted of review papers covering dif ferent areas related to the analysis of the organic pollutants in water, in cluding sampling and sample treatment, gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry and specific analytical problems for some types of compounds. We think that the volume gives a rather complete overview of these activities in Europe. Moreover, the paper presented by D. Hunt reviews the development of the new technique mass spectrometry - mass spectrometry in the United States of America. Some special sessions concerned the presentation of original contri butions in form of poster, the extended versions of which are published in this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of dope testers is constantly being obstructed by the development of ever harder-to-trace new forms of banned substances. Organisations such as the World Anti-Doping Association and the United States Anti-Doping Agency are pioneering cutting-edge techniques designed to keep competition at the highest level fair and safe, and must ensure that their drug testing laboratories adhere to the highest scientific standards. In Pharmacology, Doping and Sports these techniques and procedures are explained by the anti-doping experts who practice them. Broad-ranging in scope, this book examines the effects of performance-enhancing substances on the athlete’s health; the role of anti-doping procedures as an ethical question, and explains the background to, and the emergence of, the anti-doping movement. The book also offers in-depth analysis of key scientific matters, such as: standard analytical and diagnostic tests for sports doping regulatory standards for laboratory proficiency common performance-enhancing techniques such as anabolic and designer steroids, blood doping, growth hormones, and gene doping carbon-isotope ratio testing. Written by some of the world's leading authorities on the science of sports doping, Pharmacology, Doping and Sports provides an invaluable study of up-to-the-minute anti-doping techniques. This book is essential reading for all sports scientists, coaches, policy-makers, students and athletes interested in the science or ethics of doping in sport.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a dose of drug is administered, three main phases of drug action may be distingushed. In the "pharmaceutical" phase the dosage form disintegrates, the active substance dissolves and becomes available for absorption. The second phase ("pharmaco kinetic" phase) includes absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. That fraction of the dose which finally reaches the circulation after absorption will be available for biological action in the third, or "pharmacodynamic" phase when the drug reaches the target tissues and a drug-receptor interaction takes place. The objectives in studies of drug metabolism are: (a) to identify the pathways by which drugs are transformed in the body; (b) to ascertain quantitatively the importance of each pathway and intermediate; (c) to identify and quantify endogenous constituents influenced by the drug or its metabolites which may interfere with common metabolic processes. Since metabolites usually differ from their precursors by only a single chemical group, the resulting metabolic pathways generally consist of a series of closely related compounds. Mass spectrometry is uniquely suited for the analysis of drugs and metabolites for several reasons: only a minimal amount of sample preparation is needed, closely related compounds can be analyzed in a single step, structures can often be deduced directly from the mass spectra without the need for pure reference spectra, and constituents can be quantified with relative ease even when present in fractional nanogram quantity.
