Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syllabus of a Course of Lectures on Elementary Geology The method of presentation followed in these lectures is not intended to be a strictly logical one from a geological point of view. It is not thought that the logic of the subject as a whole is of any particular importance to the student until he shall have gained a good general knowledge of geologi cal phenomena and of geological principles. It is the aim to begin with those phenomena with which the average student is most likely to be familiar, and by using this familiarity to branch out so as to cover the whole field, in so far as it can be done in such an elementary course of lectures. The order of presentation is approximately that followed in the text books. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dynamic Geology (With References to Structural Phenomena in Their Relation to Processes): A Recitation Text This volume is intended to be used as a recitation text in a course of Dynamic Geology consisting of lectures, laboratory and field observations, and recitation periods. The broader aspects of the subject and its discussional phases may well be presented in lectures with numerous illustrations. Actual experience and knowledge of the material of Geology ought to be gained in the laboratory and by field studies. It is, however, difficult to convey by word of mouth, either in the lecture room or field where students need to take notes while listening, the definite concepts and exact relations that comprise a large body of the science. This can be done much better by means of the diagrams and precise phrases of a printed text since these can be gone over again and again until a given point is clearly understood and not involved in misconceptions due to the speakers language or faulty hearing on part of the student. It is, therefore, intended that students study this text paragraph by paragraph and diagram by diagram and be prepared, at the recitation periods, to give exact and confident answers to questions on the content of the sections assigned. In this way and only in this way can a sound basic knowledge of the subject be gained. The lectures and field experience will then serve to broadly illuminate, point out the wider applications and the limitations of the text definitions. This special text on Dynamic Geology is necessary because the regular elementary geology texts on the market include and intermingle in their chapters consideration of all the other sub-divisions of Geology, viz. Mineralogy, Petrography, Stratigraphy, Paleontology, Economic Geology, and Physiography. In the case of Physiography especially this causes confusion and ought to be avoided. Further, Dynamic Geology deals primarily with the processes operative on and in the earth, and a knowledge of these is essential to a proper and appreciative understanding of the other phases of geology. Since in nature, however, there are no exact boundaries; and one natural science, or phase of it, must, therefore, overlap others; so in Dynamic Geology also there must be occasional excursions into, and consideration of some of the other branches of the general subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Structural and Historical Geology a Laboratory Manual The work here outlined should include a minimum of writing, but it should be done with great care. The written answers should be concise and to the point. Many of them can be given in a word or a short sentence; but in some cases, detailed explanations are called for. After his corrected paper is returned, each student should review the exercise with the folios before him, in order to see where mistakes were made. For some years the structural discussion in Van Hise's Principles of North American pre-cambrian Geology 1 has been widely used by American teachers of structural geology. The writer had the privilege of association with Dr. Van Hise in the development of that work, and the present volume is partly a development and revision of the ideas of that paper.
