Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on fieldwork data gained through co-operation with the Sydney, Australia branch of the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU), we document key elements of union strategy at the branch level in the year immediately after the removal of the Howard Government in 2007.A key aspect of branch level strategy was building site visits by a team of organisers designed to rebuild influence on sites and reconnect with workers.Furthermore, the CFMEU's hiring of foreign language speaking organisers and production of foreign language publications is a praiseworthy attempt to reach out to ethnic minority workers and bring them under the 'mainstream' union umbrella. Through a set of micro-cases we detail migrant worker exploitation in the industry in Sydney and document a dedicated organizational strategy of humanitarian union action towards these workers which both goes beyond the normal expectations of union membership. 'Roman Catholic social teaching' and 'Marxism' inform our discussions.
Book Synopsis On the Relationship between Catholicism and Marxism by : Kieran James
Download or read book On the Relationship between Catholicism and Marxism written by Kieran James and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This short book contains a previously unpublished article of personal reflections on the relationship between Catholicism and Marxism. The book includes a critique of the Social Teaching encyclicals written by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and Pope John Paul II in the 1980s. Our conclusion is that it is completely possible, although at times existentially challenging, to be a Roman Catholic-Marxist. We will see how John Paul II subtly incorporated some of the key ideas of the liberation theologians into the official body of Roman Catholic Social Teaching after 1986. This book should help younger researchers who might be interested in but are struggling with Catholic Social Teaching and/or Marxism in either theoretical and/or practical realms.

Book Synopsis Global Migration Beyond Limits by : Franklin Obeng-Odoom
Download or read book Global Migration Beyond Limits written by Franklin Obeng-Odoom and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Global Migration beyond Limits carefully considers but ultimately rejects the idea that migration is driven by the choices of individual migrants, and instead starts from the idea that institutions shape all forms, forces, and functions of migration. Of these institutions, however, land is central, whether in internal migration, international migration, or global migration. Historically or currently, the evidence also clearly shows that migration and migrants transform both the sites where migrants are resident and the places from which migrants travelled. The change is more transformational than previous accounts have established, sometimes involving turning around dead cities and towns into vibrant local economies and reconstructing food networks for entire regions and nations. This book also raises serious analytical questions about three bodies of literature: mainstream economic accounts of migration, environment, and inequality; mainstream sustainability science and alternatives to it (e.g. ecological economics); and conservative and nativist claims about population problems and alternatives to them centred only on the freedom that a borderless world could create. Obeng-Odoom argues that much of the crisis of migration and sustainability can be understood as a reflection of global long-term inequalities and cumulative stratification, reflected at different scales in the global system, though the form of migration is conditioned by more than economic forces. The so-called migration crisis, therefore, seems quite routine and familiar. It is an outward expression of the political-economic system in which socially created value is privately appropriated as rents by a privileged few who use institutions such land and property rights, race, ethnicity, class, and gender to keep others in their place in the global economic and stratification ladder"--
Book Synopsis Reconstructing Urban Economics by : Franklin Obeng-Odoom
Download or read book Reconstructing Urban Economics written by Franklin Obeng-Odoom and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2016-08-15 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neoclassical economics, the intellectual bedrock of modern capitalism, faces growing criticisms, as many of its key assumptions and policy prescriptions are systematically challenged. Yet, there remains one field of economics where these limitations continue virtually unchallenged: the study of cities and regions in built-environment economics. In this book, Franklin Obeng-Odoom draws on institutional, Georgist and Marxist economics to clearly but comprehensively show what the key issues are today in thinking about urban economics. In doing so, he demonstrates the widespread tensions and contradictions in the status quo, showing how to reconstruct urban economics in order to create a more just society and environment.
Book Synopsis Contesting Inequality and Worker Mobilisation by : Michael G. Quinlan
Download or read book Contesting Inequality and Worker Mobilisation written by Michael G. Quinlan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-10 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contesting Inequality and Worker Mobilisation: Australia 1851-1880 provides a new perspective on how and why workers organise, and what shapes that organisation. The author’s 2018 Origins of Worker Mobilisation examined the beginning of worker organisation, arguing inequality at work, and regulatory subordination of labour, drove worker resistance, initially by informal organization that slowly transitioned to formal organisation. This new volume analyses worker mobilisation in the period 1851-1880, drawing data from a unique relational database recording every instance of organisation. It assesses not only the types of organization formed, but also the issues and objectives upon which mobilisation was founded. It examines the relationship between formal and informal organisation, including their respective influences in reshaping working conditions and the life-circumstances of working communities. It relates the examination of worker mobilisation to both historical and contemporary contexts and examines mobilisation by different categories of labour. The book identifies important effects of mobilisation on economic inequality, hours of work (including the eight-hour day and the beginnings of the weekend) and the development of democracy. It will be of interest to researchers, academics, and students in the fields of social mobilisation, social and economic history, industrial relations, labour regulation, labour history, and employment relations.

Book Synopsis Division of Labour by : Tom Sheridan
Download or read book Division of Labour written by Tom Sheridan and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1989 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prime ministership of J.B. Chifley from 1945 to 1949 covered one of the most turbulent periods in the history of Australian industrial relations. Popularly believed to be the work of agitators sent by Moscow, the labor unrest during this period was actually due to other, more domestic factors. Here, Sheridan presents an authoritative account of the events and people of this era. He challenges long-held beliefs and provides new insights into this watershed period in Australian politics and industrial relations.
