With individual maps to show the course of each river and over 100 colour photographs, it's essential browsing for any Londoner and the perfect gift for anyone who loves exploring the past... 'An amazing book' -- BBC Radio London 'Talling's highly visual, fact-packed, waffle-free account is the freshest take we've yet seen. A must-buy for anyone who enjoys the "hidden" side of London -- Londonist 'A fascinating and stylish guide to exploring the capital's forgotten brooks, waterways, canals and ditches ... it's a terrific book' - Walk 'Pocket-sized, beautifully designed, illustrated and informative - in short a joy to read, handle and use' -- ***** Reader review 'Delightful, informative and beautifully produced' -- ***** Reader review 'A small gem. A really great book. I can't put it down' -- ***** Reader review 'Fascinating from start to finish' -- ***** Reader review ************************************************************************************************ From the sources of the Fleet in Hampstead's ponds to the mouth of the Effra in Vauxhall, via the meander of the Westbourne through 'Knight's Bridge' and the Tyburn's curve along Marylebone Lane, London's Lost Rivers unearths the hidden waterways that flow beneath the streets of the capital. Paul Talling investigates how these rivers shaped the city - forming borough boundaries and transport networks, fashionable spas and stagnant slums - and how they all eventually gave way to railways, roads and sewers. Armed with his camera, he traces their routes and reveals their often overlooked remains: riverside pubs on the Old Kent Road, healing wells in King's Cross, 'stink pipes' in Hammersmith and gurgling gutters on streets across the city. Packed with maps and over 100 colour photographs, London's Lost Rivers uncovers the watery history of the city's most famous sights, bringing to life the very different London that lies beneath our feet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Hill, located in the North Ward of Newark, overlooks the Passaic River to the east and Branch Brook Park to the west. This desirable residential area is filled with large homes representing a variety of architectural styles, from Richardsonian Romanesque to Craftsman. In the mid-1800s, three major landowners acquired most of the former farmland on the northern edge of Newark. These men built mansions for themselves and modest housing for those who worked in their nearby plants. With easy commuting access to downtown Newark and New York City, the Forest Hill neighborhood was marketed to wealthy professionals. One local landmark is the old Tiffany factory. A 52-block area of Forest Hill has been designated a National Historic District and is listed in the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. Forest Hill showcases the rich architectural and community history of this Newark neighborhood.

Book Synopsis Delamotte's Crystal Palace by : Ian Leith
Download or read book Delamotte's Crystal Palace written by Ian Leith and published by Historic England. This book was released on 2005 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents 47 photographs, which were all taken in 1859 by Philip Henry Delamotte and showed the interior of the Crystal Palace after it had been rebuilt in Sydenham, London and before it was destroyed for the first time by fire in 1866. These photographs are now housed in English Heritage's photographic archive, the National Monuments Record. All 47 photographs are beautifully reproduced in this book, as well as shots of the building in its original Hyde Park site where it was built for the great exhibition of 1851. Also included are views of the Crystal Palace when it was rebuilt after the 1866 fire and then when it was destroyed again by fire in 1936. The book also tells the story of this legendary Victorian pleasure dome and its many incarnations. Much of our previous knowledge of this important building and its contents came almost entirely from engravings. The reproduction of these high quality original photographs allows, for the first time, a much fuller appreciation of one of the most important architectural and cultural features of mid-Victorian England, which in its heyday was visited by many millions of people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mandell Creighton (1843-1901) was a famous historian and the first editor of the English Historical Review. His intelligence and energy made an impression upon everyone he met. Admired by Queen Victoria, only his untimely death stopped him becoming Archbishop of Canterbury. His wife Louise (1850 -1936) was a prolific historian in her own right. Her strength of character and organisational ability made her a natural leader of Victorian women's movements. The writings of this remarkable couple, especially their letters, reveal their relationships with each other and with their seven children, their work and home life, their servants, houses, holidays in Italy, and the pleasures of their lives together.

Book Synopsis The Wood that Built London by : C. J. Schüler
Download or read book The Wood that Built London written by C. J. Schüler and published by Sandstone Press Ltd. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Meticulously researched yet accessible' GeographicalStanding in the busy streets of South London today, it is hard to imagine that much of this suburban townscape was once a vast wood, stretching unbroken for almost seven miles from Croydon to the Thames at Deptford. In The Wood That Built London, C.J. Schüler takes us on a journey through time, telling tales of invaders and trade guilds, map makers and soldiers, royals and working class people. From the 8th century to current conservation efforts, Schüler offers a fresh perspective on London's history, with tales of murder, Anglo-Saxon treasure, fires, pandemics, the blitz and more along the way. This compelling narrative history charts the fortunes of the North Wood from the earliest times: its ecology, ownership, management, and its gradual encroachment by the expanding metropolis.
