Book excerpt: "Seldom are we able to listen to the story of a school that has so greatly impacted world mission. As we contemplated how to record the first forty years of the School of World Mission, now School of Intercultural Studies, it was obvious that the best way was to capture the memory of one who lived it. While many of our faculty can claim deep root in the school, no one compares to Chuck Kraft who, apart from the first four years, has been a vital part of every development." - C. Book Synopsis Guiding Light by : Kevin George Hovey
Download or read book Guiding Light written by Kevin George Hovey and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rev. Dr. Alan Tippett was arguably one of the leading missiologists of the twentieth century. Through his prolific pen, poignant observations, and powerful insights he significantly influenced mission research and activity in the period of the 1960s to 1980s. This was particularly facilitated through his research, writing, and teaching at the Institute of Church Growth, Fuller Theological Seminary School of World Mission, and his inaugural editorship of the American Society of Missiology’s journal, Missiology: An International Review. Yet for those who did not know Tippett’s material well, the very specific nature of his research and writing limited the influence of his insights. For example, without already knowing the pertinent content, why would a missionary to Thailand think of reading Tippett’s Solomon Islands Christianity? However, according to Doug Priest, editor of a number of Tippett’s posthumous publications, this volume has “done what even Tippett himself did not do, and that is to capture the key features of his missiology in one volume.” So Guiding Light functions as an in-depth overview of “The Essential Alan Tippett.” I can attest that the nature of Tippett’s material continued to inform and inspire me throughout the eleven years of the research and writing of this study.

Download or read book Four Careers written by Charles H. Kraft and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-10-23 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While in high school Chuck felt God’s call to be a field missionary in Africa, expecting to spend his life there. But God only allowed him three years in the “bush.” He had other things in mind for him. These years working cross-culturally laid a solid foundation for his future accomplishments. Through a series of unplanned events, God made him a teacher of missionaries and a missiologist—teaching and writing to improve missionary principles and practices. In this book Kraft reflects on how he was shaped as a missiologist and why/how he felt the need for writing his many books and articles. “Culture-positive” is the term he has coined for his approach. It’s an approach that honors a people’s way of life and helps them to express their faith in Christ within that way of life without converting to another culture. He taught that God loves and accepts them as they are—plus faith—and seeks to work with them to develop their own Christianity based on their own understanding of Scripture. Chuck sees a missionary as a coach, not as a director. This approach has shown its effectiveness both among the people Chuck worked with (the Kamwe of northern Nigeria) and in the field ministries of his students.
Book Synopsis The Rise of Network Christianity by : Brad Christerson
Download or read book The Rise of Network Christianity written by Brad Christerson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why, when traditionally organized religious groups are seeing declining membership and participation, are networks of independent churches growing so explosively? Drawing on in-depth interviews with leaders and participants, The Rise of Network Christianity explains the social forces behind the fastest-growing form of Christianity in the U.S., which Brad Christerson and Richard Flory have labeled "Independent Network Charismatic." This form of Christianity emphasizes aggressive engagement with the supernatural-including healing, direct prophecies from God, engaging in "spiritual warfare" against demonic spirits--and social transformation. Christerson and Flory argue that macro-level social changes since the 1970s, including globalization and the digital revolution, have given competitive advantages to religious groups organized as networks rather than traditionally organized congregations and denominations. Network forms of governance allow for experimentation with controversial supernatural practices, innovative finances and marketing, and a highly participatory, unorthodox, and experiential faith, which is attractive in today's unstable religious marketplace. Christerson and Flory hypothesize that as more religious groups imitate this type of governance, religious belief and practice will become more experimental, more orientated around practice than theology, more shaped by the individual religious "consumer," and authority will become more highly concentrated in the hands of individuals rather than institutions. Network Christianity, they argue, is the future of Christianity in America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: River of God is an introduction to world missions aimed at undergraduate students. However, the readers will soon discover that the book is rich in its content far beyond the editors' original plan. It serves as a reader for people with various levels of missiological interest and competence and deals with cutting-edge issues in missions. This book introduces a new paradigm, Kingdom Missiology, which builds on shalom in the Old Testament and as Jesus applied to the Kingdom of God in the New Testament. The first half of the book looks at Kingdom Missiology from the biblical, historical, and cultural dimensions. The second half of the book describes helpful strategies in the implementation of this paradigm. The importance of urban ministry is woven throughout the book. Book Synopsis A Diagram for Fire by : Jon Bialecki
Download or read book A Diagram for Fire written by Jon Bialecki and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the work that miracles do in American Charismatic Evangelicalism? How can miracles be unanticipated and yet worked for? And finally, what do miracles tell us about other kinds of Christianity and even the category of religion? A Diagram for Fire engages with these questions in a detailed sociocultural ethnographic study of the Vineyard, an American Evangelical movement that originated in Southern California. The Vineyard is known worldwide for its intense musical forms of worship and for advocating the belief that all Christians can perform biblical-style miracles. Examining the miracle as both a strength and a challenge to institutional cohesion and human planning, this book situates the miracle as a fundamentally social means of producing change—surprise and the unexpected used to reimagine and reconfigure the will. Jon Bialecki shows how this configuration of the miraculous shapes typical Pentecostal and Charismatic religious practices as well as music, reading, economic choices, and conservative and progressive political imaginaries.
Book Synopsis Wrestling with Alligators, Prophets, and Theologians by : C. Peter Wagner
Download or read book Wrestling with Alligators, Prophets, and Theologians written by C. Peter Wagner and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past half-century, C. Peter Wagner has been at the leading edge of the key spiritual paradigm shifts that have been accompanied by major moves of the Holy Spirit. In the 1960s the missionary movement in South America was at its peak--and Dr. Wagner was there. In the 1970s he was a recognized authority in the church-growth movement. In the 1980s he taught a popular course at Fuller Seminary with Vineyard movement leader John Wimber that advocated praying healing for the sick, spiritual mapping, identificational repentance and spiritual warfare. Dr. Wagner coined the phrase Third Wave to describe this fresh move of the Holy Spirit--the impact of which is still being felt today. In the 1990s he became a leader of the New Apostolic Reformation, and in the new millennium he has championed the Dominion Mandate, adopting the Seven Mountain (or 7M) template for reclaiming the culture for God's kingdom. For five decades, Dr. Wagner has led the church from one great move of God to the next, riding the wave of the Spirit through changes he never imagined when he first answered God's call to ministry. In Wrestling with Alligators, Prophets, and Theologians, Wagner tells, for the first time, his personal story of ongoing transformation. Readers will get a close-up view of the seismic shifts in the church's recent history, through the eyes of one of the only people to have seen it all unfold.
