Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sherman DD (Duplex Drive) tank was a brilliant innovation; the design and development of a tank that could float and even 'swim' in water was controversial. Each tank was enveloped in a waterproofed canvas screen, launched at sea from landing craft and then 'swam' to shore, where the screens were deflated, allowing the tanks to operate as fighting vehicles. This book discusses the Sherman DD's many variants, including the prototype Valentine DD tank and examines the successes and tragic failures on the beaches of Normandy and further into North-West Europe, including the challenge of crossing the River Rhine.

Book excerpt: The winner of the Mary McCarthy Prize in Short Fiction and the Towson Prize for Literature. “Exquisite storytelling” from the author of The Let Go (Foreword Reviews). Jerry Gabriel delivers an unsentimental portrait of rural America in Drowned Boy, a collection of linked stories that reveals a world of brutality, beauty, and danger in the forgotten landscape of small-town basketball tournaments and family reunions. In “Boys Industrial School,” two brothers track an escaped juvenile convict, while in the titular novella, a young man and woman embark on a haphazard journey to find meaning in the death of a high-school classmate. These stories probe the fraught cusp of adulthood, the frustrations of escape and difference, and the emotional territory of disappointment—set in the hardscrabble borderlands where Appalachia meets the Midwest. “Eight linked stories, set among boys and men in southern Ohio, have the masculine virtues of honest craft and plain, carefully chosen language . . . Writing that sticks with the reader much longer than showier fiction.” —The Plain Dealer “A nuanced and complicated examination of the way grief is contagious, sparking dark emotions in people who initially are barely affected.” —Time Out Chicago “In prose as spare and enchanting as the town’s landscape, Gabriel paints a beautiful and sobering portrait of Middle Americans trapped in a world of snow, ice, and inevitability.” —Booklist

Book excerpt: "Sand and Steel gives us D-Day, arguably the greatest and most consequential military operation of modern times, beginning with the years of painstaking and costly preparation, through to the pitched battles fought along France's northern coast, from Omaha Beach to the Falaise and the push east to Strasbourg. In addition to covering the build-up to the invasion, including the elaborate and lavish campaigns to deceive Germans as to where and when the invasion would take place, Peter Caddick-Adams gives a full and detailed account of the German preparations, but the heart of the book is Caddick-Adams' narratives of the five beaches where the terrible drama played out--Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword, and the attempt by American, British, and Canadian soldiers to gain a foothold in Europe"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a pilot who flew near-daily combat missions, this engrossing book is the story of one man, his colleagues and his machine, the mighty F-4 Phantom II, at war. Sherman Lead is the gripping story of a year flying the F-4 in combat during the Vietnam War, told through the eyes of a fighter pilot. Operating out of Ubon Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand in 1968–69, Gail Peck and his squadronmates in the 433rd Tactical Fighter Squadron of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing were tasked with flying combat missions into North Vietnam and Laos at this time as part of Operations Rolling Thunder and Steel Tiger. The F-4 was heavily involved in the air-to-ground mission at this time, with targets being well defended by enemy anti-aircraft artillery and surface-to-air missiles. Gail Peck's arrival in-theatre coincided with the beginning of electro-optical and laser guided 'smart' bomb combat operations. There were periods of fierce combat interspersed with lulls, and the fighting was intense and unforgettable to those who participated. Some men lived through it, and others died without a clear understanding of why.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Born to Run, a heartwarming story about training a rescue donkey to run one of the most challenging races in America, and, in the process, discovering the life-changing power of the human-animal connection. "A delight, full of heart and hijinks and humor." —John Grogan, author of Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog When Christopher McDougall decided to adopt a donkey in dire straits, he had no idea what he was getting himself into. But with the help of his neighbors, Chris came up with a crazy idea. Burro racing, a unique type of competition in which humans and donkeys run side by side over mountains and through streams, would be exactly the challenge Sherman and Chris needed. In the course of Sherman’s training, Chris would enlist Amish running clubs, high-spirited goats, the service animal community, and two Sarah Palin–loving long-distance female truckers. Sherman’s heartwarming story of overcoming all odds to run one of the most unbelievable races in America shows the healing power of movement and the strength of the human-animal connection. Look for Christopher McDougall's new book, Born to Run 2, coming in December!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of combined arms operations in World War II created the need for specialized armored vehicles. In the case of amphibious attacks, the issue arose of how best to land tanks on a beach. Although a variety of specialized landing craft were developed, the Dieppe raid in 1942 encouraged the development of tanks that could be deployed from further off-shore to limit the vulnerability of the LCT craft. The deep-wading equipment that they developed was first used during Operation Husky on Sicily in July 1943, and subsequently for Operations Avalanche (Salerno, September 1943), Shingle (Anzio, January 1944) and Overlord (Normandy, June 1944). The US-manufactured DD tanks were used during Overlord by both US and British forces, and again in 1945 during the Rhine crossings. Initially, developments in the Pacific Theater were separate from those in Europe. The Marines learned from the Tarawa landings in 1943 that unprepared tanks could not be safely landed even in shallow water. DD tanks were never seriously considered for the Pacific, so other solutions were sought. A detailed study of specialized US amphibious tanks, this is a title that will appeal to those interested in both Pacific and European Theaters, modellers and collectors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cove, or Bunker's Cove, is a place that remains virtually untouched by time. Nestled within the confines of beautiful Panama City and only a stone's throw away from St. Andrews Bay, The Cove abounds with rich tradition and charm. Before tourism moved farther south, the area was a haven for those from more hectic locales, with local businessmen including A.J. Gay, T.H. Harmon, W.C. Sherman, L.H. Howell, and H.L. Suddeth promoting the area's heavily forested, game-rich peninsula. The surrounding waters teemed with snapper, flounder, crabs, and shrimp, supporting locals and drawing tourists, including actor Clark Gable. Amidst changing times, the neighborhood has survived and continues to thrive. This must-have photo album, filled with many never-before-seen images culled from a variety of local sources, is a fitting tribute to this peaceful community. Residents and tourists alike will discover what it was like to live, work, and play in The Cove of yesteryear. Snapshot glimpses of the past bring to life the neighborhood as it is fondly remembered-the corner markets, the shipyard and air corps neighbors, Cove School, and the Cove Hotel.

Book excerpt: In many ways, Sherman is a guy's guy. He eats everything in sight. His so-called smooth moves with his girlfriend sink like a stone. And his happy-go-lucky manner endears him to all of his friends. What makes Sherman atypical is the fact that he's a great white shark whose pals include a smart-aleck hermit crab named Hawthorne, an intellectual fish called Earnest, and a sensible sea turtle known as Fillmore. For more than a decade, the daily adventures of Sherman and his coral companions have delighted readers of Sherman's Lagoon across the globe. Now Sherman and his sea urchin buddies take us for another swim down memory lane with Surf's Up, bringing together Sherman's Lagoon strips from 1994 and 1995, many of which have never before been published in book form. This roll-back-the-clock collection picks up where the successful Greetings from Sherman's Lagoon collection left off, offering the strip's loyal longtime readers the opportunity to catch up on classic Sherman tales of yesteryear. Whether you are a faithful follower of the silly yet sophisticated strip or new to Sherman's underwater world, Surf's Up will be a book you can't put down. Once you've seen the world through the eyes of Sherman, you'll never look at marine life the same way again.
