Book excerpt: Swimmer By: Brett Reetz A Door County (WI) native and washed-up Chicago Detective, Lloyd Jornt decided it might be best to return to the Peninsula to drink the remainder of his failed life away. Unfortunately, a series of bizarre watery deaths interrupt Lloyd’s destructive binge when his step-brother, the Sheriff, enlists his help to stop the killings. In Lloyd’s quest for answers, he meets a twelve-year-old Todd Grafton- a deaf boy who spends his evenings with his telescope studying the night sky over Green Bay. When, one night, Todd spots someone he thinks is a super hero, he decides that he wants to be a night swimmer, too. Together, Lloyd and Todd discover that pristine Chamber’s Island may be the home to an ancient evil: the Swimming Man.

This volume contains the papers presented at the sixth symposium. The keynote addresses covered lactate metabolism, performance determining factors and the analysis of sprint swimming. The contributed papers range widely across sports science, coaching and training and sports medicine.
Book Synopsis Pathophysiology by : Alois A.A. Bühlmann
Download or read book Pathophysiology written by Alois A.A. Bühlmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No doubt, there are many ways to practice "good" medicine, whatever this may be. Forty years ago the history, observation, and clinical examina tion of a patient led to diagnosis and therapy. Since then, we have learned a great deal about the biochemical and physiologic processes in the human body and about the pathogenetic mechanisms by which they are disturbed and lead to disease. Today, the basis of clinical judgment and patient management is the understanding of pathogenetic mechanisms of disease. This concise and basic text of pathophysiology introduces the medical student to the basic pathophysiologic mechanisms. Each chapter begins with a short outline of the general physiologic and biochemical principles of an organ, a system, or a metabolic process; their possible derangements are described, with empha sis on the more important and more frequently occurring diseases. Although the primary purpose is to convey a basic understanding of clinical medicine to first-year medical students, many students have used this book as a convenient reference up to and after graduation.

Book Synopsis Fish Swimming in Turbulent Waters by : Hubert Chanson
Download or read book Fish Swimming in Turbulent Waters written by Hubert Chanson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-09-13 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-level river crossings, including culverts, are important for delivering a range of valuable socioeconomic services, including transportation and hydrological control. These structures are also known to have negative impacts on freshwater river system morphology and ecology, including the blockage of upstream fish passage, particularly small-body-mass fish species. Given the enormous environmental problems created by road crossings, new hydraulic engineering guidelines are proposed for fish-friendly multi-cell box culvert designs. The focus of these guidelines is on smooth box culverts without appurtenance, with a novel approach based upon three basic concepts: (I) the culvert design is optimized for fish passage for small to medium water discharges, and for flood capacity for larger discharges, (II) low-velocity zones are provided along the wetted perimeter in the culvert barrel, and quantified in terms of a fraction of the wetted flow area where the local longitudinal velocity is less than a characteristic fish speed linked to swimming performances of targeted fish species, and (III) the culvert barrel is smooth, without any other form of boundary treatment and appurtenance. The present monograph develops a number of practical considerations, in particular relevant to box culvert operations for less-than-design discharges. It is argued that upstream fish passage capabilities would imply a revised approach to maintenance, in part linked to the targeted fish species. This reference work is authored for civil and environmental engineers, as well as biology and ecology scientists interested in culvert design. While the book is aimed to professionals, the material is also lectured in postgraduate courses and in professional short courses.

Thousands of people and families owe gratitude to the lifeguards of Huntington Beach for nearly a century of vigilance, dedication, and service.
Book Synopsis Surveillance Data from Swimming Pool Inspections by : Mary Lou Lindgren
Download or read book Surveillance Data from Swimming Pool Inspections written by Mary Lou Lindgren and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swimming increases the potential for the spread of recreational water illnesses (RWIs) (e.g., cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, and shigellosis). Local health programs inspect public and semipublic pools periodically to determine compliance with health regulations. During inspections, data pertaining to pool water chemistry, filtration and recirculation systems, and mgmt. and operations are collected. This report summarizes pool inspection data from databases at 6 sites across the U.S. collected during May 1-Sept. 1, 2002. The findings underscore the utility of these data for public-health decision making and the need for increased training and vigilance by pool operators to ensure high-quality swimming pool water for use by the public.
