Download or read book Vesper Flights written by Helen Macdonald and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling author of H is for Hawk explores the human relationship to the natural world in this “dazzling” essay collection (Wall Street Journal). In Vesper Flights, Helen Macdonald brings together a collection of her best loved essays, along with new pieces on topics ranging from nostalgia for a vanishing countryside to the tribulations of farming ostriches to her own private vespers while trying to fall asleep. Meditating on notions of captivity and freedom, immigration and flight, Helen invites us into her most intimate experiences: observing the massive migration of songbirds from the top of the Empire State Building, watching tens of thousands of cranes in Hungary, seeking the last golden orioles in Suffolk’s poplar forests. She writes with heart-tugging clarity about wild boar, swifts, mushroom hunting, migraines, the strangeness of birds’ nests, and the unexpected guidance and comfort we find when watching wildlife.

Book excerpt: "The Messenger of the Gods has been a neutral party in the war between the immortal Olympian gods for centuries. Zeus and his brothers on one side; Hera and her sisters on the other... there will be no peace between them while jealousy festers and anger and resentment keep their hold on the hearts of the gods. Hermes has seen it all, and listened, while both parties have ranted and raved about their mistreatment at the hands of the other. But when will it be his turn? The nursery at Olympus has been filling with noise and laughter, but while Hermes' uncles seek their own perfect match, he wallows in denial that the prophecy was even meant for him. How can he truly stay neutral in this war when his heart is pledged to the mortal who would bear his children? It's not fate he's avoiding, it's the knowledge that everything he is will be compromised. It would only take one moment of weakness, and every alliance that he has worked so hard to build will be shattered.Noah isn't a one-night-stand kind of guy, but when it comes to Lukas, he's made a month's worth of exceptions. A triathlete in the depths of competition training, Noah doesn't have time for much more, but there's something about Lukas that makes him want more than what's currently on offer... and frankly, he's tired of waking up alone. All it takes is one moment of strength, one step towards what he wants, and everything will change forever, but Noah has no idea what kind of change is coming, or what it will mean for his future." -- Provided by publisher.

Book Synopsis Friendship in Doubt by : Richard Kaczynski
Download or read book Friendship in Doubt written by Richard Kaczynski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-27 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infidel. Atheist. Rationalist. Agnostic. Occultist Aleister Crowley, soldier J. F. C. Fuller, and poet Victor Neuburg embraced these labels as active contributors and participants in the British secularist movement at the dawn of the twentieth century. Rebelling against Victorian religious and social strictures, they dreamed of a world guided by scientific evidence instead of superstition. Friendship in Doubt examines how the Agnostic movement-from Saladin's Agnostic Journal and G. W. Foote's Freethinker, to the Rationalist Press Association and its Literary Guide--inspired and introduced Crowley, Fuller, and Neuburg to each other as foundational figures in the new religious movement of Thelema. Agnosticism would inform not only Thelema, but also Crowley's publishing company S.P.R.T.; Aâ, Aâ, , a successor to the fragmented Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn; the Equinox journal; and the concept of "magick" as Scientific Illuminism. This volume also collects for the first time the contributions of all three to the Agnostic literature. This scarce and largely unknown material provides insight into the thinking of Crowley, Fuller and Neuburg at the start of their careers, and an understanding of their subsequent trajectories after they parted ways. As such, it provides unique insights into the role of Agnosticism in the formative years of an emerging occult movement which would go on to exert an immense influence on Western esotericism in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
