Book excerpt: The people in ancient times the phenomenal world was teeming with life; the thunderclap, the sudden shadow, the unknown and eerie clearing in the wood, all were living things. This unabridged edition traces the fascinating history of thought from the pre-scientific, personal concept of a "humanized" world to the achievement of detached intellectual reasoning. The authors describe and analyze the spiritual life of three ancient civilizations: the Egyptians, whose thinking was profoundly influenced by the daily rebirth of the sun and the annual rebirth of the Nile; the Mesopotamians, who believed the stars, moon, and stones were all citizens of a cosmic state; and the Hebrews, who transcended prevailing mythopoeic thought with their cosmogony of the will of God. In the concluding chapter the Frankforts show that the Greeks, with their intellectual courage, were the first culture to discover a realm of speculative thought in which myth was overcome.

Book excerpt: An award-winning, alarming account of “one of the central challenges facing civilization” (The Washington Post Book World). Offering ecological, historical, and cultural perspectives, this “well-researched and thought-provoking book” (Minneapolis Tribune) explains how we are using, misusing, and abusing our planet’s most vital resource. Reporting from hot spots as diverse as China, Las Vegas, and the Middle East, where swelling populations and unchecked development have stressed fresh water supplies nearly beyond remedy, this account reveals how political struggles for control of water are raging around the globe, and rampant pollution increases already dire environmental threats. This powerful narrative about the lifeblood of civilizations is “a wake-up call for concerned citizens, environmentalists, policymakers, and water drinkers everywhere” (Publishers Weekly). Winner of the Governor General’s Award

The first line--The History of the Lord's Recovery--contains chapters 9 through 12 of The Apostles' Teaching, which are in volume 1 of The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1990. This section includes fellowship concerning the seven seals, the seven trumpets, and the seven bowls in relation to the rapture of the saints, the second coming of Christ, the kingdom of a thousand years, and the New Jerusalem. The second line--Words for New Believers--contains chapters 2 through 5 of The Crucial Revelation of Life in the Scriptures, which are in volume 2 of The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1969. These chapters cover life for image and dominion, the Lamb, the manna, and the produce of the land for eating, aspects of drinking in the Old Testament, and the flow of life. The third line--Maturing in Life--contains chapters 3 through 6 of Perfecting Training, which are in volume 1 of The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1980. These chapters contain messages on the damage of opinion, how to deal with opinion in the church life, killing opinion by the vision of Christ, and a dominating factor to deal with opinion. The fourth line--The High Peak of the Divine Revelation--continues with the final chapter of Crystallization-study of the Epistle to the Romans, which is in volume 1 of The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1994–1997. This chapter covers the announcing of the gospel. This section then continues with chapters 1 through 3 of Crystallization-study of the Gospel of John, which are in volume 4 of The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1994–1997. These chapters begin with an introductory word on the Word of God and then focus more specifically on the Word of God and God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, one of the most torrid and forbidding regions in the world burst on to the international stage. The discovery and subsequent exploitation of oil allowed tribal rulers of the U.A.E, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait to dream big. How could fishermen, pearl divers and pastoral nomads catch up with the rest of the modernized world? Even today, society is skeptical about the clash between the modern and the archaic in the Gulf. But could tribal and modern be intertwined rather than mutually exclusive? Exploring everything from fantasy architecture to neo-tribal sports and from Emirati dress codes to neo-Bedouin poetry contests, Tribal Modern explodes the idea that the tribal is primitive and argues instead that it is an elite, exclusive, racist, and modern instrument for branding new nations and shaping Gulf citizenship and identity—an image used for projecting prestige at home and power abroad.

Book excerpt: Engineering Aspects of Membrane Separation and Application in Food Processing presents an overview and introduction to a wide range of membrane processes, their unique characteristics and challenges. In the food industry, as in many industries, membranes have an environmental advantage over conventional processes that they displace, because they are less energy intensive. The processing at near-ambient conditions also retains flavors and nutritional value. These advantages, together with significant reductions in the cost of membrane modules, augers well for their future not only in the dairy industry but in other parts of the food industry, such as alcohol processing, animal product processing, and fruit and vegetable processing. Chapters address a wide range of membranes separations in the food and beverage industries, and applications are provided that will be of value not only to food engineers but also to process engineers working in other areas. The processing of food is now a highly interdisciplinary science, and anyone concerned with food processing will benefit from reading this book and understanding what membrane processes of the twenty-first century have to offer.

This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface Coating is in use since long back is rapidly increasing with the development of civilization. There has been considerable impact in this field. Surface coating technology specializes in finding out engineering solutions to all the critical production problems related to coating the products on a continuous and consistent basis in your production plant. Surface coating can be defined as a process in which a substance is applied to other materials to change the surface properties, such as colour, gloss, resistance to wear or chemical attack, or permeability, without changing the bulk properties. Production of surface coating by any method depends primarily on two factors: the cohesion between the film forming substances and the adhesion between the film and the substrate. The development of science and technology revolutionized the surface coating industry in the progressive countries of the world. Surface coating technology involves the use of various types of products such as resins, oils, pigments, polymers, varnishes, plasticizers, emulsions, etc. We have completely replaced costly petroleum solvents with water and we get cheaper finished products with no evaporation loss and fire hazards. Paint is any liquid, liquefiable, or mastic composition which after application to a substrate in a thin layer is converted to an opaque solid film. It is most commonly used to protect, colour or provide texture to objects. The paint industry volume in India has been growing at 15% per annum for quite some years now. Varnish is one of the important parts of surface coating industry. They are used to change the surface gloss, making the surface more matte or higher gloss, or to provide the various areas of a painting with a more unified finish. Plasticizer plays an important role in the formation of polyvinylchloride (PVC). It is also used to plasticize the polymers. Polymers are divided into three different types; linear polymers, branched polymers and cross linked polymers. Polymer Energy system is an award winning, innovative, proprietary process to convert waste plastics into renewable energy. On the basis of value added, Indian share of plastic products industry is about 0.5% of national GDP. This book basically deals with principles of film formation, evaporation of solvent from a solution, chemistry and properties of drying and other oils, glyceride structure and film formation, the size of polymer molecules, processing of oil and resin, inorganic pigments, classification by chemical constitution, azo pigments, organic pigments in architectural (decorative), organic pigments in industrial finishes, solvent requirements of specific resins convertible systems, molecular structure of polymer plasticiser systems, properties of plasticised polymers, surface active agents, optical properties, rheological characteristics, emulsions and other aqueous media, formation of polymer emulsions, modern methods of analysis etc. The book presents a concise, but through an overview of state of technology for surface coating. This is organized into different chapters like principal of film formation, chemistry and properties of drying and other oils, processing of oil and resin, organic pigment, solvents, plasticizer, surface active agent, surface preparations etc. This book is an invaluable resource to technocrats; new entrepreneurs, research scholars and others concerned to this field.
