Book excerpt: Jottings is a collection of poems written over a period of twenty years. Most of the poems in this collection are contextual. Written in different genres of poetry, while some of the poems appear as general statements but having a bearing on nature. Others are responses of the poet to social/economic/political issues and those related to women. The poems reflect the mood and views of the poet. While poems like "A Symbol of Beauty," "Horizon," "Loss" appear simple, they have an underlying meaning, the philosophy of life. In poems like "Disgusting" and "To a Brave Son," the poet points an accusing finger at the powers that be for the sorry state of affairs. "Love" brings out the true meaning of the word while describing the different stages in the life of a person. The life of a girl child form the theme of "Who Am I." The hapless condition of young women and children, especially girls, are brought to fore in "To Ponnus and Malalas" and "Sadist Minds." "Down Memory Lane" goes back in time. There are also satirical poems that take potshots at and ridicule the superstitious and the believers like "Light That Darkens," "In Fool's Paradise," "Onam," and "In Your Name." Again, while "Bapu" is on Mahatma Gandhi and his ideals, it ridicules all those who earned fame in his name. While "Motherland's Boys" talks of the deterioration of India-Pakistan relations, "How Many More Children Will You Kill" chides Israelis and Palestinians for deaths of innocent children. "An Unknown Past" looks at an old person struggling in vain to open the locked doors of her memory. There are also poems that talk of a personal loss and some that snub individuals that make haughty statements. All the illustrations in the book are by cartoonist and animator Mr. Swathi Jaikumar.

Book Synopsis Hostage Rescue Manual by : Leroy Thompson
Download or read book Hostage Rescue Manual written by Leroy Thompson and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2005-01-08 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive illustrated overview of the dynamic operations that have saved lives in hostage situations around the world. Based on strategies proven successful in numerous incidents, including the landmark SAS rescue at Prince’s Gate, London, and compiled by an author with intimate and practical knowledge of the field, this book explains why the success of a rescue is often determined in the hours leading up to confrontation. Once an incident is contained, a large share of the responsibility for a successful conclusion rests with the hostage negotiator, whose job is to save the lives of both hostage and hostage-taker. But if negotiations fail, it becomes necessary to send in the hostage-rescue team to resolve the situation by force and skill. Hostage Rescue Manual explains the complex factors that determine the entry methods undertaken by a team, with discussion of the pros and cons of stealth versus dynamic approaches, plus the significance of distraction in securing successful site entry. Operations in widely differing locations from nuclear power plants to airliners are detailed, as are the range of special weapons available to the men and women tackling each incident. We learn of the multiple roles played by participants, such as the use of snipers as intelligence sources. With vivid photographs and diagrams of rescue units in action, Hostage Rescue Manual is the complete reference work on counter-terrorist procedures all over the world. This revised edition updates the book with an entirely new section devoted to developments in hostage rescue, among them operations in Russia and Iraq, since first publication.

Download or read book The World’s First SWAT Team written by Leroy Thompson and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In turbulent Shanghai in the years between the World Wars, the International Settlement was a mercantile powerhouse that faced unrest from Communist labor unions, criminal gangs, spies, political agitators, armed kidnappers and assassins. Adjoining the Settlement were the French Concession and the Chinese city, both hotbeds of intrigue and crime themselves. Called the most sinful in the world, the Settlement relied on its police: the Shanghai Municipal Police, one of the most advanced forces in the world. After an incident in 1926 when the police fired upon demonstrators, which resulted in unrest and strikes, W. E. Fairbairn was charged with forming a specialized unit to deal with riots and armed encounters. The resulting Reserve Unit became the prototype for future SWAT teams, as it developed tactics for using snipers in barricade and hostage incidents, techniques for use of the submachine gun during raids, hostage rescue tactics, aggressive riot-dispersal tactics and various other tactical innovations. Out of the experiences of the unit came many of the techniques later taught by W. E. Fairbairn, E. A. Sykes, Pat O'Neill and others to the Commandos, Rangers, SOE, OSS, 1st Special Service Force and other Second World War elite units. Those same techniques still resonate today with special forces and police tactical units.
