Book excerpt: In the Sarboucane sea, Balbuzar the pirate reigns supreme. He attacks, plunders, sinks, and ransoms everything that comes within his reach. Savage, cruel, formidable, certainly, Balbuzar is; but also with a certain bonhomie, and a great sense of justice. He is in harmony with the sea, the islands, the wind, the rocks. Around him, birds, always. Men, women, children...they all love him. For he is free as the air. But now the Empress Pépita XIII is worried about her state of affairs, and Balbuzar's constant plundering. She sends against him her best officer, the Commodore, at the head of an armada. He represents force, order, law. Arrogant, domineering, relentless. And sure to be the one who will clean the Sarboucane sea. Balbuzar and the Commodore clash. Two exceptional sailors, two sharp warriors. The fight begins, shattering, tumultuous. The struggle, however, is unequal, for the Commodore has immense resources, an army behind him and the power of the empire. He's built a gigantic ship that will surely sweep away the pirates and their black-flag flotilla. Balbuzar's fate seems certain. Will the outlaw will be crushed by the enormity of the adversary? Cooked in the imperial pot? Or will the cunning pirate will find the rift in the monster's breastplate? Will he will defeat his monstrous foe, like David blasting Goliath? Balbuzar is the story of a confrontation between two worlds, that of royalty and that of piracy, between conformity and diversity. Gérard Moncombe's text deftly balances action, humor and poetry, while artist Frédéric Pillot's stunning, gorgeously detailed illustrations help paint this rousing, unforgettable tale. One that you'll want to come back to again and again... A fable about freedom, about resistance, about power. And an ode to nature.

Summary Imagine web apps with fast browser load times that also offer amazing developer productivity and require less code to create. That’s what Svelte and Sapper deliver! Svelte pushes a lot of the work a frontend framework would handle to the compile step, so your app components come out as tight, well-organized JavaScript modules. Sapper is a lightweight web framework that minimizes application size through server-rendering front pages and only loading the JavaScript you need. The end result is more efficient apps with great UX and simplified state management. Purchase of the print book includes a free eBook in PDF, Kindle, and ePub formats from Manning Publications. About the technology Many web frameworks load hundreds of “just-in-case” code lines that clutter and slow your apps. Svelte, an innovative, developer-friendly tool, instead compiles applications to very small bundles for lightning-fast load times that do more with less code. Pairing Svelte with the Sapper framework adds features for flexible and simple page routing, server-side rendering, static site development, and more. Book excerpt: A girl lovingly tends to her garden through the seasons In the depths of winter, one young girl is already dreaming of planting her very own vegetable garden. In January, she sketches out the rows of lettuce, the trellis for the peas, and a large plot for the tomatoes while she waits for warmer weather. March is time for sowing, and April gives way to the first leaves of her seedlings. As the seasons change from spring to summer, she (with the help of her moms) spreads compost and turns up the soil to finally plant her veggies into the earth. As the months go by, she lovingly weeds, waters, and cares for her garden until it's time to harvest a bounty big enough to share with all their friends! My Delicious Garden celebrates the joy of growing food from seed and is a cozy exploration of the connections between nature, food, and community.

This book was released on 2021-08-05 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout life, most people have to struggle with making life’s decisions. These decisions not only involve the individual making the decision but also his family and in some cases the public. The life of a law enforcement officer involves all three. This burden is often stressful taxing one’s conscience to the breaking point. The individual has to rely on his family background and values instilled in him throughout his life. A strong faith and belief that all has to be fair and just is viewed as an idealistic approach that everyone strives toward in making decisions. To truly adopt this fairness honesty and justice philosophy in your life’s decisions is extremely difficult in today’s world. Many choose to prostitute their convictions for their jobs, money, status, and power rationalizing their decisions for personal gain, leaving humanity in ashes. As a law enforcement officer, his daily decisions directly effects his fellow man. This burden is self-inflicted by the individual to do the right thing, or to go along with the good-old-boy attitude. The latter accomplishes nothing and is actually looked down upon by the honest public. The public truly wants a leader they can trust to carry out this honesty and justice philosophy; however, the public has no clue to the sacrifices that one has to make in order to achieve these goals. In order for one to fulfill his mission on striving for honesty and fairness, he has to become a slave of convictions. Thus, the partial title. This title must be evaluated by the reader of the book on whether or not the main character in the book was, in fact, dedicated to his convictions. By infusing the diary of corruption into the book title poses to the reader a decision-making process in which he decides whether the diary is proof that corruption exist or all this is just the way it is and no one can change these practices. The actual diaries represent a compilation of daily entries into the diaries documenting the author’s daily life. The author of this book does not seek the approval of his life’s path but rather poses the question. What would you do if you were in his shoes? Walk the walk and talk the talk or acquiesce because it is too costly. Fairness. Honesty. Justice for all. I hope.

Book excerpt: This book is about the power of the Word conceived as the main and most effective aspect of divine energy. It is the only systematic study in English of notions concerning the Word (Vac) as these are expounded in the shaiva tantras of Kashmir and in related texts. Padoux first describes the Vedic origins of these notions, then their development in texts of different tantric traditions. He shows how different levels of the Word abide in humans, how these levels are linked to the kun, and how they develop into articulate speech and discursive thought. He also describes how the universe is created out of the letters of the alphabet. The last two chapters explain the powers of mantras as sacred ritual utterances. These powers are described as magical as well as religious, because they can achieve supernatural results as well as lead to salvation. Their uses are linked to yogic mental and bodily practices.

Book excerpt: The papers collected in this book were given and discussed at the symposium on "Soil water physics and technology", which was held in Rehovot, Israel, from August 19th-September 4th, 1971. It was sponsored by the International Society of Soil Science (1.S.S.S.) through its Commissions I (soil physics) and VI (soil technology), and organized by the Israeli Soil Science Society. Thanks are due to the Editors for having assembled contributions and discussion remarks into a well-rounded, coherent book. The subjects covered in this book are the theoretical and practical aspects of the following topics: water movement in soils, soil-water interactions, evaporation from soil and plants, water requirements of crops, ion activity and migration in soils, soilwater management and salinity. In as much as these contributions were not solicited, they represent ideas and subjects considered important by the authors and debators. In science, one often finds a gap between basic research and practical application. If reading this book creates a feeling of an apparent lack of balance between theory and practice, this represents the state of our science today, and the thoughtful reader can and will recognize that much remains to be done. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I.K.H. Halayqa investigates lexical correspondences of Ugaritic and Canaanite: "Ugaritic was a spoken and written language in an area adjacent to various Canaanite dialects, such as the language of the El-Amarna letters from the city states in Syria, Lebanon and Palestine and Phoenician in Lebanon. Ugaritic was still a spoken language in the El-Amarna period, to which Old Canaanite belongs. Therefore the generic relationship between Ugaritic and Canaanite cannot be dispensed. It therefore seems appropriate to compare etymologically all the Ugaritic lexemes to those of the Northwest Semitic languages, in particular with the Canaanite branch." "The position of the Ugaritic language among the Northwest Semitic languages remains a question of lively debate. Ugaritic has been grouped with Amorite, Canaanite, Arabic and Old South Arabic. It has even been considered early Hebrew or early Phoenician or has been seen as a separate Northwest Semitic language distinct from Canaanite and Aramaic. Nevertheless, neither general acceptance nor satisfactory classification has been firmly established." "The process of searching and investigating all the possible Canaanite correspondences for 2254 Ugaritic lexemes has lead to the emergence of our lexicon, which contains 1643 certain and uncertain lexemes (1302 + 341) In other words, of 2254 lexemes only 1643 have been found with certain and uncertain Canaanite cognates."
