Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Army commanders have insufficient time to train on every mission requirement and organizational standard. Mission essential task lists help to scope training requirements based on current performance. However, there presently is no way for unit trainers to systematically schedule their training based on expected performance. The ability to project training status outward, beyond current performance levels, would enhance decisions about scheduling training. The ARI has previously investigated skill retention in order to develop such a capability. Changes in the operational environment and in the theoretical understanding of human performance have created opportunities to advance ARI's research program and have necessitated that these advances be made to assist the warfighter. Our research assessed the implications of the contemporary operational environment for maintaining skilled performance in light of a host of theoretical factors thought to influence skill decay. We implemented our findings in a survey-based instrument to be used for rating individual and collective tasks on several of these retention factors. This paper describes the survey-based instrument, its development, and initial evaluation. In future work, task ratings assigned using this instrument will be compared to actual performance data in order to build and validate a quantitative model of individual and collective skill retention.

Book Synopsis Supporting Training Strategies for Brigade Combat Teams Using Future Combat Systems (FCS) Technologies by : Michael G. Shanley
Download or read book Supporting Training Strategies for Brigade Combat Teams Using Future Combat Systems (FCS) Technologies written by Michael G. Shanley and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2007 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study seeks to help the Army identify options to improve its future (i.e., circa 2016) training strategies for Brigade Combat Teams (BCTs) equipped with Future Combat System (FCS) technologies. Key findings are that live training will need to remain at the core of training programs for FCS units, and that adaptation to changing operational requirements will be a primary training challenge. Overall, the findings indicate that planned training enhancements can provide important improvements across a wide spectrum; however, the overall training capability achieved will likely be less than that needed to meet future training requirements. Unit time, the potential for technological advancement, and training budgets were found to be key constraints. While the study stresses greater emphasis on training manpower support in battle command training as the Army's best chance for significant near-term improvement, it concludes that longer-term improvement will depend on how closely the Army monitors and manages its enhancement programs. The process of shaping and balancing future training enhancements, for example, would benefit from better information and improved evaluative capabilities. These changes would be further enhanced by developing better metrics for the quality, quantity, and adaptability of training, by continuing to improve spiral development processes to evolve training methods and means, and by improving the visibility of financial information across training categories.
