Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book conducts a holistic analysis of climate change perceptions, vulnerabilities, impacts, and adaptation, based on the primary household-data collected from the Chepang community residing in the rural Mid-Hills of Nepal. Socio-economic and demographic data from the household survey is integrated with meteorological and spatial data to conduct an integrated analysis. Quantitative analysis is also supplemented by qualitative information. Given the context of ongoing climate change, the livelihoods issues of a highly marginalized Chepang community form the center-point of analysis. The book demonstrates that balanced assets possession is a prerequisite to strengthen the adaptive capacity of the households. Furthermore, the ability of translating adaptive capacity into adaptation actions is determined by the households’ ability to correctly perceive the changes and their access to various assets. The book recommends to ensure the availability of non-farm livelihood opportunities along with access to formal/vocational education and skill development training as these are the key factors contributing to reduce the vulnerability. The book concludes that mainstreaming of climate change into development efforts is a must for sustainable development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains how a former net food exporting Nepal has become a net food importing country due to a lack of an integrated system-wide approach to planning and governance of agriculture and natural resources. It demonstrates how various components of the food system, such as agronomy, agrobiodiversity, plant health, post-harvest management, livestock and fisheries, and socio-economics including marketing and trade, have been managed in sectoral silos, crippling the very foundations of food systems innovations. The book also explores ways to tackle climate change impacts while considering gender, social equity, conservation agriculture practices, and crop modeling as cross-cutting themes. This book utilizes Nepal as a case study in relation to wider questions of food security and livelihoods facing South Asia and synthesizes lessons that are relevant to the Global South where countries are struggling to harmonize and integrate natural resources management for sustainable and effective food security outcomes. As such, it significantly contributes to the knowledge toward achieving various United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Book excerpt: This book addresses some key strategic questions related to agriculture in the context of major contemporary developments and emerging challenges in Nepal such as the changing role of agriculture with economic growth, structural transformation in reducing poverty, improving nutritional outcomes, and addressing the challenges of climate change. The book also suggests policy measures to improve the delivery of critical inputs and services and ensure the participation of marginal and smallholders in high-value chains. Further, it discusses how the new federal system and governance structure will affect the delivery of agricultural technology and services. The book is divided into five parts. Part I discusses macro-issues in the agriculture sector, while Part II focuses on agricultural productivity growth and its main drivers. The third part explores diversification in the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors by farmers and other rural people for livelihood improvement, while the fourth part deals with agricultural trade and marketing issues, highlighting policy implications and recommendations in the areas of immediate focus and further research. Lastly, Part V addresses institutions and governance issues, which are vital for agricultural development. In the final chapter, the editors summarize and synthesize the book’s main findings and develop a policy agenda for addressing the many challenges faced by the agriculture sector in Nepal, so as to make it more productive, competitive, sustainable, and inclusive. The book offers a rich source of analytical information on various aspects of agricultural development in Nepal and will be of immense value to policymakers, development partners, civil society, students, and those interested in the economic and agricultural development of not only Nepal, but also other developing countries.

In particular the implications of geographical and socio-cultural dislocations imposed by the State in recent decades on the sustainable livelihoods of a particular minority group like the Ranas and their reactions are explored. This is also a thesis that explores the interactive relationships between dislocation, marginalization, impoverishment and cultural changes in relation to the roles of different social actors (Ranas, non-Ranas and the State)." --p. 2.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book reports how the livelihoods of people particularly in rural area of Nepal depends on natural resources. The study shows the contribution of watershed management; which is management of complex elements(Water, Land, Forest, and People itself) to sustain their livelihoods. The farming system heavily depends on natural resources. Increase in population and its dependency on land resources has resulted on the degradation of watersheds. Government of Nepal has been implementing various watershed management programs to address the issues. Poverty reduction is worthless without considering the sustainable management of land resources, as the majority of the people depend on these resources. Peoples' participation is must for sustainable watershed management. Author has explored different aspects of watershed management and tried to find out the contribution of watershed management program to the livelihoods of local people considering sustainable livelihood framework by identifying the criteria and indicators of watershed management activities. The work is quite beneficial to researchers, students, practitioners and policy makers involved in NRM.

It reviews the country's environmental situation, institutional and legislative provisions, status toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and key challenges in creating environmentally sustainable, climate-friendly, disaster-resilient, and socially inclusive economic growth. Based on extensive stakeholder consultations and cause-and-effect analysis, the study recommends updating national and subnational environment policies and ensuring that national, provincial, and local levels of the new federal system are harmonized. Institutional strengthening and capacity building should also be conducted to improve environmental governance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The removal of local residents from protected areas remains the most common conservation strategy in developing countries; however its wide-ranging impacts on displaced societies have rarely been addressed. This book is based on 15 months fieldwork carried out among a group of displaced park residents knowns as Rana Tharus in the country of Nepal. The book documents that the unplanned resettlement scheme of Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve failed to mitigate the socio-economic losses that Rana Tharus experienced due to their displacement. The undivided household unit was no longer their first preference when the new economic realities made themselves felt, and gender and partilineal kin relationships became more tense. The traditional labouring system (Kamaiya) that existed between wealthy and poor Rana Tharus declined due to increasing poverty. All these had erased their ability to maintain sustainable livelihoods that they had previous enjoyed. The analysis should help shed some light on current conservation practices and should be especially useful for policy makers, conservationists, or anyone who concerns the welfare status of diplaced communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the sustainability aspect of organic and conventional farming systems, which is commonly categorized into three sub-aspects: social, environmental and economic. The social structure of a given area, organic friendly technologies, soil properties, crop diversification and income are the elements chosen for comparison, and are analyzed using descriptive and statistical methods. In addition, the book assesses the current status of the local organic market in Nepal and field experiments involving the use of various organic means to achieve better production for selected vegetables. Determining the benefits and/or challenges of organic and conventional farming is important to determining the most viable type of farming in the long term, but can be greatly impacted by a given area’s specific characteristics (social, environmental, political, etc.), which is why this study focuses on a specific location: the Chitwan district of Nepal, where group conversion to organic farming has existed alongside conventional farming for years. This book offers a useful guide for both practitioners and academic researchers who are interested in organic farming and food security, particularly in developing countries.
