Book excerpt: We are delighted to share with you this exploration into the intricate world of environmental management—a subject that lies at the intersection of human activity, ecological systems, and the pressing need for sustainable solutions. This book is the culmination of our collective passion for understanding and addressing the environmental challenges that define our era. It is our sincere hope that the insights, strategies, and perspectives presented within these pages will not only inform but inspire action towards a more sustainable and resilient future. As authors, our journey began with a shared commitment to shed light on the complexities of environmental management. We recognized the need for a resource that not only outlines the challenges we face but also offers tangible and practical solutions. "Sustainable Horizons" is our response to this imperative—a comprehensive guide that draws from our combined experiences, expertise, and a shared belief in the power of informed environmental stewardship. In crafting this book, we sought to create a narrative that transcends disciplinary boundaries. Environmental management is inherently interdisciplinary, and we have endeavored to reflect this reality in our approach. Each chapter is a mosaic of perspectives, blending scientific insights, real-world case studies, and a forward-thinking vision that anticipates the evolving landscape of environmental challenges. While rooted in research and scholarship, "Sustainable Horizons" is not meant to be an academic tome accessible only to experts. Instead, we have strived to make the content accessible to a broad audience—from students eager to explore the field to seasoned professionals seeking innovative solutions, and to every individual with a genuine interest in contributing to a sustainable future. Real-world examples are integral to our approach. By examining successful environmental management initiatives, we aim to highlight the transformative potential of well-informed and well-executed strategies. These examples serve as beacons of hope, illustrating that positive change is not only possible but already underway in various corners of the globe. As you embark on this journey through "Sustainable Horizons," we encourage you to approach it not merely as a passive reader but as an active participant. Each chapter is an invitation to engage, reflect, and consider how the principles and practices outlined can be applied in your own context. Environmental sustainability is a collective responsibility, and this book is a testament to the belief that positive change begins with individual understanding and action. We invite you to join us in exploring the horizons of a sustainable future—one where the delicate balance between humanity and the environment is not just acknowledged but actively nurtured. Thank you for being a part of this journey. May the insights within these pages spark new ideas, fuel your commitment to environmental stewardship, and contribute to the positive transformation our planet so urgently needs. With warm regards, Dr. Omraj Shyam Deshmukh I Dr. Kulbhushan Dhyaneshwar Meghe Surendrasingh Samarsingh Gaharwar I Dr. Mukul Abasaheb Burghate Authors

Book excerpt: This book tells the story of how the convergence between corporate sustainability and sustainable investing is now becoming a major force driving systemic market changes. The idea and practice of corporate sustainability is no longer a niche movement. Investors are increasingly paying attention to sustainability factors in their analysis and decision-making, thus reinforcing market transformation. In this book, high-level practitioners and academic thought leaders, including contributions from John Ruggie, Fiona Reynolds, Johan Rockström, and Paul Polman, explain the forces behind these developments. The contributors highlight (a) that systemic market change is influenced by various contextual factors that impact how sustainable investing is perceived and practiced; (b) that the integration of ESG factors in investment decisions is impacting markets on a large scale and hence changes practices of major market players (e.g. pension funds); and (c) that technology and the increasing datafication of sustainability act as further accelerators of such change. The book goes beyond standard economic theory approaches to sustainable investing and emphasizes that capitalism founded on more real-world (complex) economics and cooperation can strengthen ESG integration. Aimed at both investment professionals and academics, this book gives the reader access to more practitioner-relevant information and it also discusses implementation issues. The reader will gain insights into how "mainstream" financial actors relate to sustainable investing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental sustainability practice and research have advanced over the past decade from novelty to near-mainstream status today. During this environmentally critical time period, sustainability practitioner techniques, such as environmental, energy and social auditing, other sustainability information and related systems, and a wide variety of environmental sustainability approaches have been developed, improved and institutionalised, advancing both the practice and research of environmental sustainability management and policy. However, academics and practitioners in the sustainability field still have widely differing perspectives on what a sustainable organisation is or might be, but seldom take the opportunity to share these respective sustainability visions, let alone the multiple ways to achieve them. New Horizons in Research on Sustainable Organisations is intended to bridge this gap between academics and practitioners with cutting-edge research from both groups on progress towards sustainability. After working on sustainability-related projects involving other academics, both research- and practitioner-oriented graduate students, consultants, managers and activists, the lead co-editors of this volume saw the need to encourage information exchanges among differing networks of sustainability stakeholders to create a pathway for researchers and practitioners in the general area of organisations and the natural environment to address issues of common interest. There are many networks in the general subject area, but the cross-pollination of ideas between academics and practitioners remains sketchy. New Horizons in Research on Sustainable Organisations is intended to present and encourage such cross-pollination. The chapters in this volume are presented in three subsets, generally proceeding from the most "macro" to the most "micro" in terms of perspective and applicability. However, this arbitrary division belies the integration from macro through meso (or mid-range) to micro levels that is apparent in these studies. Macro approaches typically include wider geographic scopes, greater numbers of stakeholders, and more complex explanatory factors than micro approaches. Each chapter adopts one or more particular sustainability world-view and then grounds these and the other chapter elements within actual organisations. Therefore, the reader is advised to envision not a one-dimensional continuum but rather a circle in which the macro view both feeds back and feeds forward to the micro view. This volume addresses a number of intriguing and important sustainable organisation phenomena such as multiple sustainable development perspectives, changing environmental politics, environmental management systems variations, voluntary environmental programme performance, complex adaptive systems, and environmental technology development. Additionally, several models are suggested, such as cultivation, capabilities and business ecology frameworks.

Book excerpt: It is apparent that environmental issues affect the livelihoods and well being of individuals, communities and businesses the world over. In that vein, this book examines the impact that climate change and other environmental factors have on business. The effect of climate change, while a significant factor, will influence business slowly, but inexorably. Executives should manage environmental risk at three levels: regulatory compliance, potential liability from industrial accidents, and pollutant release mitigation.Companies that are proactive in mitigating their exposure to climate-change risks will not only generate new profitable opportunities, but also gain competitive advantage over their rivals in a carbon-constrained future. Enhancing Global Competitiveness through Sustainable Environmental Stewardship provides frameworks for identifying how climate change might affect a business, and suggests strategy guidelines to manage the risks and seek opportunities. This seminal collection of research will be of particular interest to students and scholars of sustainability studies, business and management, and business professionals concerned with the role they will play in the changing and challenging times that lie ahead for business growth and environmental consciousness.

The goal is to reveal the important intersection between sustainability and spirituality by using spirituality as the invisible guiding hand in the quest for sustainability. The editors and contributors examine old social and economics dilemmas from a new perspective in order to provide alternative approaches to economic and social development. The enclosed contributions cover a broad range of topics such as sustainable development and human happiness, contemporary spirituality, environmental ethics and responsibility, and corporate social responsibility. In addition, the title features real-world case studies and discussion questions that inspire self-reflection and theoretical and empirical deliberation in academic courses and business seminars. Contemporary approaches to economic and social development have failed to address humankind's abiding need for spiritual growth. For material development to be sustainable, spiritual advancement must be seen as an integral part of the human development algorithm. While the policy makers and governments can play their respective role, each one of us has to consciously adopt spirituality and sustainability as a way of life. This book will rely on the spiritual power of individuals to heal themselves and the environment. Featuring interdisciplinary perspectives in areas such as science, marine biology, environmental policy, cultural studies, psychology, philosophy, ecological economics, and ethics, this book will provide extensive insights into the complimentary fields of spirituality, sustainability and ethics.
