Book excerpt: Finance is an important economic driver; a proper financial system enables a strong environment which ultimately impacts nature through our production and consumption patterns. It is increasingly becoming critical for the financial sector to integrate sustainability in its decision making. Sustainable finance integrates environmental risks in financial decision making and encourages sustainable development investment.Kenya is among the top providers of climate finance in Africa alongside South Africa and Nigeria. The country's first-ever green bonds were issued by Acorn Holdings in 2019. That issue was oversubscribed. For African countries sustainability related financial instruments like green bonds, represent a large untapped potential. The oversubscription of the bond did not come as a surprise since the interest from private and institutional green investors for emerging markets like Kenya is rapidly growing and there is a need to onboard them in the coming years. This paper gives an overview of sustainable finance in Kenya, the policies, strategies and legal framework in place, the various initiatives that have been put in place to grow an ESG culture locally and the potential it presents to Kenya and emerging economies in Africa who could adopt similar practices. It also highlights challenges that climate finance faces in Kenya and concludes by providing possible solutions to some of these challenges.

Sustainability ensures that economic growth takes into consideration social and environmental issues. In the financial sector, sustainability is necessary due to the critical role played by the sector in national development. In Kenya, financial institutions are financing investments in the agricultural, manufacturing, housing, infrastructural, energy and extractive industries. These investments have significant environmental and social impacts creating the need for adoption of sustainable finance. In spite of this, initiatives aimed at sustainability in the sector, are diverse and uncoordinated, and are therefore not likely to result in tangible long term benefits for society, environment and the business community. A synergistic approach to sustainability in the industry is thus imperative. The paper proposes the adoption of a hybrid approach in implementing sustainable banking in Kenya. The model would harness the positive attributes of market-driven and compliance approaches to regulation. Such a model could have voluntary codes and guidelines developed by the industry, and a regulator to enforce and ensure compliance with those guidelines.

While the economy is diversifying, it remains largely dependent on natural resources. Agriculture and tourism account for nearly half of gross domestic product (GDP).This report aims to promote inclusive green investment in Kenya. It focuses on policy, structural, and investment innovations across the economy and financial sector that would increase capital flows that support sustainable development. Inclusive green investment forms an important part of the broad environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations that underpin sustainable investment. Green investment supports economic growth in a clean, resilient, and sustainable manner - such as initiatives to encourage more efficient use of resources, reduce pollution, and mitigate environmental damage. Inclusive investment serves not only investors, but the broad interests of society, particularly low-income segments of the population.

Book excerpt: The Kenyan population is highly concentrated in urban centres, leading to increased social, economic and environmental strains, with a significant percentage of urban dwellers living in sprawling slums. Urban development is increasingly a major focus, especially in the fight against urban sustainability problems. There is little practical orientation in the academic literature for the growing gap between the rich and poor. Current literature is enormously concerned with resource use and environmental pressures, paying scant attention to the nexus between urban sustainability and empowerment of the urban poor. This book initiates debates on the segment of urban population often referred to as the bottom of the pyramid (BOP), by analysing the microfinance innovation following evaluation of the impacts of access to microfinance and financial training and the implications to urban sustainability in Kenya. The main conclusion reached is that microfinance has an instrumental role to play in promoting sustainable urban development as it supports social welfare improvement and increases the livelihood of participants, business development and urban sustainability to a certain extent, thereby empowering the urban poor in contributing to poverty alleviation.

Book excerpt: More than 120 countries have committed to net zero targets by 2050, requiring systemic economic transitions on an unprecedented scale and with the finance sector playing a leading role. Green finance will power the transition, ensuring capital flows to the firms, investments, projects and technologies looking to create a sustainable, low-carbon world. To achieve net zero, every professional financial decision must take climate change and broader sustainability factors into account. Green and Sustainable Finance provides a comprehensive guide to the application of common green and sustainable principles and practices in banking, investment and insurance to help finance professionals embed these in their daily activities and decision-making. Focusing on the necessity of mainstreaming green and sustainable finance globally, this book includes a clear explanation of the science underpinning climate change. Green and Sustainable Finance covers a wide range of green finance products and services in retail, commercial and corporate banking, insurance, investment and fintech. It provides an overview of emerging regulation and international market frameworks and standards, particularly in relation to climate and environmental risk. Consideration is also given to the ethical dimensions of green and sustainable finance, including how professionals can promote market integrity and take active steps to avoid greenwashing. Endorsed by the Chartered Banker Institute as the core text for the benchmark Certificate in Green and Sustainable Finance, this book is essential reading for finance professionals and students, and individuals working to embed sustainability in business, policy and regulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EU Action Plan on Financing Sustainable Growth is the most advanced and comprehensive policy agenda on sustainability in the world. But is it going in the right direction? Acting as a bridge between policy and academia, this up-to-date contribution to the global policy debate brings together some of the leading experts from the European Commission's High-Level Expert Group on Sustainable Finance, to discuss how the financial system needs to be reformed to promote sustainability. Finance has long been criticized for being short-term focused and concerned with maximizing returns to intermediaries, rather than with the interests of savers and borrowers. The financial system must now take into account environmental, social and governance considerations to support a sustainable economy and this volume offers new insights on the way forward. A must-read for anyone working on financial sector policy and sustainability.

Book excerpt: The SDGs provide a new, vital framework of goals, targets and indicators that demand coordination and collaboration across multiple thematic sectors and among a wide variety of players – both local and global. Success relies on policy coherence at national and subnational levels, diversified financing, variety in interventions and multi-stakeholder approaches. For philanthropists and social investors, the implementation of the SDGs opens up new avenues. Now, more than ever before, being strategic about philanthropic investments means forging partnerships and becoming a force for action in various multi-stakeholder coalitions under the SDG umbrella, as well as contributing to accountability in SDG implementation. The United Nations Development Group (UNDG) outlined a list of steps on how to mainstream the SDGs, including setting up cross-cutting and multi-stakeholder bodies to ensure policy coherence, collective policy-making, planning and monitoring for the SDGs with the participation of civil society, business, and philanthropy. Thus, it is more critical than ever for philanthropy and social investment actors to understand this emerging complex SDG ecosystem in the countries in which they work and how to engage, influence and benefit from coordination around the SDGs. This primer is written so that philanthropists might better understand what are the avenues for participation in the processes, policies and stakeholders involved in setting up the SDG roadmap in Kenya. The primer is an inaugural product developed jointly by teams of SDG Philanthropy Platform Kenya and Global and supported by Dalberg Research.

Book excerpt: Traditional finance focuses solely on financial return and risk. By contrast, sustainable finance considers financial, social and environmental returns in combination. This essay provides a new framework for sustainable finance highlighting the move from the narrow shareholder model to the broader stakeholder model, aimed at long-term value creation for the wider community. Major obstacles to sustainable finance are short-termism and insufficient private efforts. To overcome these obstacles, this essay develops guidelines for governing sustainable finance. Moving from traditional to sustainable finance means having to counter attitudes that are embedded in the ways our economic systems are organised. Shifting away from them requires both new ways of operating but, importantly, new underlying principles that put sustainability centre stage to guide our thinking. It is important that we put this process in motion, and the earlier the better.

The symposium explored development financing, which has become an important area of policy discussion in Africa and other developing areas in recent years. Using multifaceted and multidisciplinary analytical approaches, it considers the role of the banking system, the stock market, credit access, external aid, and sovereign wealth funds in the evolving development finance architecture. Further, the volume looks at China’s role as an aid donor, the impact of BRICs partnerships in South Africa, the role of NEPAD in mobilizing resources for infrastructure development, and the links between law, trade, and regional integration. The study concurs with previous analyses that greater access to credit by the poor represents the most effective way of fighting poverty and raising the standards of living in Africa. Cornell’s Institute for African Development and the African Development Bank were cosponsors of the 2014 symposium.

Book excerpt: Sustainable Banking introduces business leaders and students to the many ways in which financial institutions can manage their environmental and social impact and meet the needs of the current generation without compromising the needs of future generations. Olaf Weber and Blair Feltmate go beyond the business case for sustainability: how managing environmental, social, and governance risk can contribute to a bank’s bottom line – to make the sustainability case for banking: how banks and other financial institutions can make a positive impact on society. In their book, Weber and Feltmate discuss the key aspects involved in making a financial institution sustainable: how to manage the direct and indirect impacts of banking activities on the community and the environment, how to minimize and mitigate the environmental footprint of internal operations, and how to account for various types of environmental and social risk in lending and project finance. They also introduce sustainable banking products and strategies being adopted by industry leaders, such as responsible investing, social finance, and impact lending.
