It is increasingly becoming critical for the financial sector to integrate sustainability in its decision making. Sustainable finance integrates environmental risks in financial decision making and encourages sustainable development investment.Kenya is among the top providers of climate finance in Africa alongside South Africa and Nigeria. The country's first-ever green bonds were issued by Acorn Holdings in 2019. That issue was oversubscribed. For African countries sustainability related financial instruments like green bonds, represent a large untapped potential. The oversubscription of the bond did not come as a surprise since the interest from private and institutional green investors for emerging markets like Kenya is rapidly growing and there is a need to onboard them in the coming years. This paper gives an overview of sustainable finance in Kenya, the policies, strategies and legal framework in place, the various initiatives that have been put in place to grow an ESG culture locally and the potential it presents to Kenya and emerging economies in Africa who could adopt similar practices. It also highlights challenges that climate finance faces in Kenya and concludes by providing possible solutions to some of these challenges.

Sustainability ensures that economic growth takes into consideration social and environmental issues. In the financial sector, sustainability is necessary due to the critical role played by the sector in national development. In Kenya, financial institutions are financing investments in the agricultural, manufacturing, housing, infrastructural, energy and extractive industries. These investments have significant environmental and social impacts creating the need for adoption of sustainable finance. In spite of this, initiatives aimed at sustainability in the sector, are diverse and uncoordinated, and are therefore not likely to result in tangible long term benefits for society, environment and the business community. A synergistic approach to sustainability in the industry is thus imperative. The paper proposes the adoption of a hybrid approach in implementing sustainable banking in Kenya. The model would harness the positive attributes of market-driven and compliance approaches to regulation. Such a model could have voluntary codes and guidelines developed by the industry, and a regulator to enforce and ensure compliance with those guidelines.

There is little practical orientation in the academic literature for the growing gap between the rich and poor. Current literature is enormously concerned with resource use and environmental pressures, paying scant attention to the nexus between urban sustainability and empowerment of the urban poor. This book initiates debates on the segment of urban population often referred to as the bottom of the pyramid (BOP), by analysing the microfinance innovation following evaluation of the impacts of access to microfinance and financial training and the implications to urban sustainability in Kenya. The main conclusion reached is that microfinance has an instrumental role to play in promoting sustainable urban development as it supports social welfare improvement and increases the livelihood of participants, business development and urban sustainability to a certain extent, thereby empowering the urban poor in contributing to poverty alleviation.
