Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discussion about energy perspectives beyond 2020, up to 2030 and eventually 2050 has started. There seems to be a verbal consensus on the necessity of ambitious climate change mitigation policies, without a convincing perspective of the necessary policy decisions to be reached in due time. Methods to achieve greenhouse gas reduction as well as energy security vary from aiming for 100% renewable energies and setting up appropriate policy frameworks to implementing a mix of renewables comprising so-called clean fossil and nuclear energy. This book provides an analysis of the different approaches and the reasons why there is no sustainable alternative to aiming for 100% renewables – and how this vision could come true. The book provides an overview and in-depth analysis of a vital debate. It describes how the present policy framework with 2020-targets for the share of renewables, for increase of energy efficiency and for greenhouse gas emissions reduction was developed and how it has been implemented so far. Furthermore, it describes and analyses the emerging debate about the future of our energy system and the necessary next steps and targets leading up to 2030.

Book excerpt: This Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report (IPCC-SRREN) assesses the potential role of renewable energy in the mitigation of climate change. It covers the six most important renewable energy sources - bioenergy, solar, geothermal, hydropower, ocean and wind energy - as well as their integration into present and future energy systems. It considers the environmental and social consequences associated with the deployment of these technologies, and presents strategies to overcome technical as well as non-technical obstacles to their application and diffusion. SRREN brings a broad spectrum of technology-specific experts together with scientists studying energy systems as a whole. Prepared following strict IPCC procedures, it presents an impartial assessment of the current state of knowledge: it is policy relevant but not policy prescriptive. SRREN is an invaluable assessment of the potential role of renewable energy for the mitigation of climate change for policymakers, the private sector, and academic researchers.

Book excerpt: The use of renewables is spreading rapidly. Over a quarter of global electricity is already generated from solar, wind, hydro and biomass energy. With costs falling significantly, renewables are booming, helping to avoid the major climate change risks associated with fossil fuel use in power stations, homes and vehicles. But can we get rid of all of these dirty energy sources – and nuclear power, as well – and deliver 100% of our energy from renewables? Or are renewable energy systems inherently unreliable and expensive, given the need to deal with their variability? In this timely analysis, leading energy expert David Elliott tackles these issues head on and asks to what extent renewables can deliver a technologically and economically viable energy future. Exploring both the progress and problems of renewables against a backdrop of rising energy demand, he argues that, on balance, they do seem to be living up to their promises. With renewables rapidly expanding across the globe, and China now leading the pack, a renewable future could really be on the horizon.

Book excerpt: The agri-food chain consumes about one third of the world’s energy production with about 12% of it for crop production and nearly 80% for processing, distribution, retail, preparation and cooking. The agri-food chain also accounts for 80-90% of total global freshwater use where 70% alone is for irrigation. Additionally, on a global scale, freshwater production consumes nearly 15% of the entire energy production. It can therefore be argued that making agriculture and the agri-food supply chain independent from fossil fuel use has a huge potential to contribute to global food security and climate protection not only for the next decades but also for the coming century. Provision of secure, accessible and environmentally sustainable supplies of water, energy and food must thus be a priority. One of the major objectives of the world’s scientists, farmers, decisions makers and industrialists is to overcome the present dependence on fossil fuels in the agro-food sector. This dependency increases the volatility of food prices and affects economic access to sustenance. This book provides a critical review of recent developments in solar, wind and geothermal energy applications in agriculture and the agro-food sector such as processing, distribution, retail, preparation and cooking.

This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing renewable energy technologies is vitally important if the UK is to help tackle climate change and maintain secure national energy supplies. But the Department of Energy and Climate Change (the Department) is going to miss its target to supply 10% of electricity from renewable sources by the end of 2010. The Department is responsible for ensuring a series of targets are met over the next 40 years but direct government funding for developing renewable energy technologies is delivered through a complex web of organisations that the Department does not control. In consequence the Department does not have a clear understanding of how much has been spent or what has been achieved. Between 2000 and 2009, the Department and its predecessors failed to use nearly half of the resources available to it to encourage innovation in renewable energy. This is a wasted opportunity for providing investment that could have helped increase the supply of renewable energy. The Committee is concerned that the Department committed to a new, extremely ambitious and legally-binding EU target to supply 15% of all the UK's energy from renewable sources by 2020, despite not having a clear plan for how it would achieve this. The Department needs to get the best value and impacts from the Renewables Obligation. Achieving the 2050 target for an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions will need further innovation in renewable energy technologies to increase supplies after 2020 but the Department has not set out any innovation milestones it will need to meet.

Book excerpt: e term “Sustainability” possesses numerous meanings for different people and various circumstances and it is a common mistake to define sustainability strictly in terms of “environmental sustainability”. is misconception believes the major flaw of the contemporary pattern of development is simply its destruction of the environment. Handling “sustainability” only from an environmental standpoint is a superficial view that needs to be assessed carefully and underlined correctly. As A. D. Basiago suggests, “…[t]he protection of natural systems represents not an overarching panacea for achieving economic vitality and social justice, but a necessary component of an entire system for achieving economic, social and environmental ‘sustainability’, in which economic reforms and social reforms are as important.” e chapters included in this volume are composed of some selected significant contributions from the first International Sustainability Congress organized by International Center of Sustainability (ICS), 1-3 December 2016, in Istanbul, Turkey. All chapters are peer-reviewed by both the editors and at least two independent scholars from fields relevant to the manuscript's subject area. ICS is a research and academic center for sustainability founded in 2015 and dedicated to build resilience of communities and ecosystems to environmental and socio-economic risks. ICS has an integrated approach and specifies sustainability not only from an environmental point of view but also in terms of socio-economic process. Its mission is to produce information as well as enhance research and practice at Micro and Macro levels in Sustainable Development with a holistic and a cross-disciplinary approach.

Book excerpt: By using the example of Germany and Poland this multi-level policy dependency analysis by Marco Wedel researches constraints and dependencies of the European Integration of the promotion of renewable energy source electricity (RES-E). To gain insightful results, the author does not only take a look at the implementation effectiveness of the relevant Directive 2009/28/EC, but much more generally analyses the potentially conflicting polity implications of the entities involved, as well as their respective policy preferences and processes in light of RES-(E). Combined, these give rise to multi-level constraints and dependencies for the European Integration of RES-(E) promotion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this book provides a systematic approach to legislation and legal practice concerning energy resources and production in Malaysia. The book describes the administrative organization, regulatory framework, and relevant case law pertaining to the development, application, and use of such forms of energy as electricity, gas, petroleum, and coal, with attention as needed to the pervasive legal effects of competition law, environmental law, and tax law. A general introduction covers the geography of energy resources, sources and basic principles of energy law, and the relevant governmental institutions. Then follows a detailed description of specific legislation and regulation affecting such factors as documentation, undertakings, facilities, storage, pricing, procurement and sales, transportation, transmission, distribution, and supply of each form of energy. Case law, intergovernmental cooperation agreements, and interactions with environmental, tax, and competition law are explained. Its succinct yet scholarly nature, as well as the practical quality of the information it provides, make this book a valuable resource for energy sector policymakers and energy firm counsel handling cases affecting Malaysia. It will also be welcomed by researchers and academics for its contribution to the study of a complex field that today stands at the foreground of comparative law.
