Book Synopsis Airport Sustainability Practices by : C. Daniel Prather

Book excerpt: Over the last several years airport operators have introduced green initiatives in order to improve the overall sustainability of their airports. Drivers could include financial viability, staffing considerations, or other social or environmental factors. There is a significant compilation of sustainability practices from larger airports, but a less robust description of initiatives for smaller airports. This report focuses on drivers and outcomes of green initiatives undertaken at small commercial and general aviation airports. Information used in this study was acquired through a review of the literature and survey or interviews with airport operators at small and general aviation airports. Although the study found that more than half of small airports have adopted one or more sustainable initiatives and almost 20% have a formal sustainability plan in place, many of those participating in the study do not believe that their airport has an impact on the environment, and because of lack of funding and different priorities, they choose not to pursue sustainable initiatives. However, sustainability is more than environmental initiatives. These are barriers, but more airports will pursue sustainable initiatives if more funding is made available, sustainability incentives are created, or sustainability becomes a mandate.

The elements of the evaluation process should include, at a minimum, the short- and long-term implications of maintaining the sustainability practice, budgetary implications, staffing issues, appropriate metrics, environmental impacts, and a tool for conducting a cost-benefit analysis."--Project description.
Book Synopsis Stakeholder-centered Sustainability Assessment of Airport Fueling Projects by : Azzam Qari
Download or read book Stakeholder-centered Sustainability Assessment of Airport Fueling Projects written by Azzam Qari and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Airport planning is a complex process due to the number of standards and regulations that must be met, as well as the involvement of different stakeholders in the planning process. Airport construction and operation is on the rise, and consequently, the sustainable development of airports has become a concern in the development of civil aviation. However, there is limited academic research on developing a systematic framework for airport sustainability assessment. To address these research gaps, this thesis aimed to develop a mathematical sustainability assessment model for supporting sustainable development of airport fueling projects from multi-dimensional assessments that incorporates systematic methods for identifying and aggregating sustainability criteria. The research also presents two models that focus on analyzing the sustainability of these airports from emissions and energy consumption perspectives. Using a "Top-Down-Bottom-Up" methodology, the model identifies and assesses relevant sets of sustainability assessment criteria through quantitative and qualitative indicators that are compared against standard of measures. The proposed mathematical model uses Multi-Criteria Analysis to evaluate project alternatives based on a set of economic, environmental, and social sustainability criteria and indicators, as well as an overall sustainability index. The Multi-Attribute Utility Theory is used to aggregate the different indicators and calculate the sustainability index of each project alternative. The other two models present the first detailed initiative of emissions and energy analyses for aircraft fueling project. The models present the emission and energy impacts of each project alternative numerically and graphically with respect to the sustainability measures (economic, environmental and social). The models were evaluated on their merit by a focus group composed of different stakeholders of airport operations. Two case studies incorporated different designs alternatives and operational conditions for two international Gulf Cooperation Council airport fueling projects to illustrate the models and their practical applications. The case studies used the models to analyze the sustainability of the two aircraft fueling projects. Analysis of the results supported that the suggested models were appropriate to assess the sustainability of airport fueling projects. The data indicates that the implementation of the proposed models would aid in collecting information that would assist in the evaluation of airport sustainability, and would provide a comprehensive analysis that would allow airport fueling projects to operate more efficiently.
Book Synopsis A Guidebook for Selecting Airport Capital Project Delivery Methods by : Ali Touran
Download or read book A Guidebook for Selecting Airport Capital Project Delivery Methods written by Ali Touran and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2009 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes various project delivery methods for major airport capital projects. The guidebook also evaluates the impacts, advantages, and disadvantages of these various project delivery methods. The project delivery methods discussed include design-bid-build (DBB), construction manager at risk (CMR), and design-build (DB). The guidebook offers a two-tiered project delivery selection framework that may be used by owners of airport projects to evaluate the pros and cons of each delivery method and select the most appropriate method for their project. Tier 1 is an analytical delivery decision approach that is designed to help the user understand the attributes of each project delivery method and whether the delivery method is appropriate for their specific circumstance. Tier 2 uses a weighted-matrix delivery decision approach that allows users to prioritize their objectives and, based on the prioritized objectives, select the delivery method that is best suited for their project. The report will be helpful to airports with determining the most appropriate project delivery methods (e.g., DBB, DB, or CMR) for various types of airport capital projects.

Download or read book Airport Sustainability Practices written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was undertaken on behalf of TRB. The report documents a range of airport sustainability practices gathered from a literature review and web-based survey. It specifically targets airport operators and provides a snapshot of airport sustainability practices across the triple bottom line of environmental, economic, and social issues. A literature review was undertaken to inform the development of a survey for airport operators to identify current sustainability practices. After the survey, another literature review was undertaken to supplement the survey findings. The web-based survey included questions related to the management of environmental, economic, and social practices at airports; current and future drivers and priorities; and barriers to implementing sustainability. The survey was issued to 52 persons at U.S. and non-U.S. airports. Twenty-five survey responses were received from a range of large, medium, small, and non-hub U.S. airports, and from airports in the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, and Canada. The survey asked respondents to assess their airport in relation to environmental, economic, and social sustainability performance using an ordinal management performance scale. Respondents were encouraged to identify practices that were planned or in place at their airport. On overall sustainability performance, respondents from non-U.S. airports and large U.S. airports rated their airports performance higher than those from small and medium U.S. airports. Respondents identified regulation and airport policy as key drivers for the implementation of sustainability practices. For the future, they cited stakeholder concerns and global concerns such as climate change. For the next five years, large U.S. and non-U.S. airports consistently identified environmental sustainability practices as a priority. Smaller U.S. airports were more focused on economic prosperity. Corporate social responsibility and strategic environmental management at the governance level were key future priorities for some non-U.S. airports. For all the airport respondents, funding was the predominant barrier to implementation of sustainability practices. Responsibility for these practices at airports was not restricted to an environmental manager but varied across a range of disciplines and management levels. Respondents from both U.S. and non-U.S. airports said that environmental training is offered at their airport; economic and social sustainability training were not mentioned as often.

Book Synopsis Towards Sustainable Aviation by : Paul Upham
Download or read book Towards Sustainable Aviation written by Paul Upham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aviation is integral to the global economy but it is also one of the main obstacles to environmentally sustainable development. It is one of the world's fastest growing - and most polluting - industries. What can be done to retain the economic and other benefits it brings, without the associated pollution, noise, congestion and loss of countryside? In this volume, industry, policy and research experts examine how to address the problems, and what it would take to achieve genuinely sustainable aviation - looking at technological, policy and demand-management options. Without far-reaching changes the problems caused by aviation can only multiply and worsen. This work seeks to take an important step in diagnosing the problems and in pointing towards their solutions.
