Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sussex in the Great Civil War and the Interregnum, 1642-1660 History is for reading, and even a local history should not be a mere storehouse of facts; I have therefore striven, with however little success, to make this a readable narrative. It may be that in the attempt to weave the disconnected and often trivial details of county affairs into a coherent story, I have sometimes been tempted to wander astray into the general history of the time. To such lapses I can only hope that my readers will be indulgent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Great Civil War, Vol. 1: 1642 1649 The volume now published was originally intended to be the third volume of 'The Fall of the Monarchy of Charles P; but as an unexpected demand for the first two volumes of that work exhausted the issue, it was thought advisable to include them in a collected edition of my historical works issued under the title of a 'History if England from the Accession of James I. to the Outbreak of the Civil War.' As purchasers of the new edition would hardly like to begin with a third volume of the 'Fall of the Monarchy of Charles I., ' I shall doubtless best consult their interests by starting afresh under a new title, whilst those who have the old edition will not be much annoyed by the discovery that the second volume in their possession is the last of that series. The present work will, it is hoped, be contained in three volumes, the index being reserved for the last of the three. The authorities which I have consulted may be ascertained by the references given in the notes. The names of pamphlets in the British Museum Library are followed by the letters or numbers signifying the press mark. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Great Civil War, 1642-1649, Vol. 2: 1644-1647 The length to which the present volume has run has made it necessary to postpone a chapter in which I had hoped to set forth some of the effects of the war upon various classes and upon the country at large. It will be found at the beginning of the third volume, which will appear, I trust, after no unreasonable delay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Great Civil War, 1642-1649, Vol. 3 of 4: 1645-1647 At ready, before his return to Oxford, Charles had been play ing with each of the two parties into which his opponents were Charles divided. The attempt to open a correspondence 1; 5 With with Leven and the Scottish army was now of old Pan's date.1 There is more obscurity as regards the inter course between Charles and the Independents, but there is strong reason to believe that he had given a favourable response to overtures made to him from that quarter for an understand ing on the basis of liberty of conscience.3 On the whole, how ever, the King inclined to the Presbyterians. He was afraid of the democratic tendencies of the army, and he nuderesti mated the tenacity with which the Presbyterians clung to their ecclesiastical system. Circumstances were bringing both the Scots and the English Presbyterians to contemplate an understanding with the King. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Great Civil War, 1642-1649, Vol. 3: 1647-1649 IN my preface to the second volume of this work I stated my belief that the crucial year of Cromwell's career' was 1647, and that belief has been fully borne out by subsequent investigation. After watch ing him narrowly through the period when his conduct was most open to attack, I have little fear that any inquiry into his later proceedings will substantially affect the conclusions at which I have arrived. Book Synopsis The Debate on the English Revolution by : R. C. Richardson
Download or read book The Debate on the English Revolution written by R. C. Richardson and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1998-12-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This firmly established essential guide to the literature in the field appears here in a much revised third edition. New chapters are included on twentieth-century historians’ treatments of social complexities, politics, political culture and revisionism, and on the Revolution’s unstoppable reverberations. All the other chapters have been amended and recast to take account of recent publications. The book provides a searching re-examination of why the English Revolution remains such a provocatively controversial subject and analyzes the different ways in which historians over the last three centuries have tried to explain its causes, course and consequences. Clarendon, Hume, Macaulay, Gardiner, Tawney, Hill, and the present-day revisionists are given extended treatment, while discussion of the work of numerous other historians is integrated into a coherent, informative and immensely readable survey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this volume, published in 1981 under the title Into Another Mould, contemplated three aspects of the interregnum 1642-60: the suggested or even attempted reforms of local government; the politics of the New Model Army; the strains, new and old, between and within the constituent kingdoms. In this new edition, the original essays have been revised and joined by three new essays: 'Wales and the British Dimension'; 'Oliver Cromwell and his Protectorate Parliaments'; and a commentary by the editor, Ivan Roots, on procedure, legislation and constitutional change in the second of these parliaments.
