Book excerpt: The book Surviving the Mountain is based on my life and how I survived through many near-death experiences. From my beginning to being separated from my biological father as a baby to short memories of living in East Los Angeles and moving to El Monte at the age of six. El Monte, a Spanish word translated in English means The Mountain. El Monte is located in the San Gabriel Valley which is fifteen minutes from downtown Los Angeles. The Mountain or El Monte is a flat city in between two rivers, The Rio Hondo and San Gabriel Rivers. It is the end of the famed Santa Fe Trail that served as America's first commercial highway established in 1822. When you enter the city, there are signs that say, "Welcome to Friendly El Monte," but this was not my experience from the city. It has a south and a north part to it. The city was huge in an area of 9.65 square miles. Within the city's borders was where I spent a great portion of my life. I survived many trials and tribulations, and I have seen the fall of many of my brothers and sisters who did not survive this city. Street gangs, drugs, and violence corrupted my world. The casualties have devastated my people and my culture. God Brought me through this to share my story, believing that we as a people no longer have to surviving this life, but to live. We can build a new future filled with peace and prosperity as God's love and presence preserved me throughout my life. I know He can help us; all we have to do is ask Him and He will answer Matthew 7:7-8 "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened."

Book excerpt: The Santa Fe Trail’s role as the major western trade route in the early to mid-nineteenth century made it a critical part of America’s Westward expansion and the stories of its heyday include some of the greatest adventures in the history of the Old West. Drawn from first-hand accounts of early entrepreneurs and emigrants who braved the Santa Fe Trail between 1820 and 1880, this history reveals the lure of the West and puts its importance to American history in context. On the Santa Fe Trail paints a portrait of the land before the wagon tracks were carved in its surface and recounts the hardships, dangers, and adventures faced by the hardy souls who went West to make their fortunes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gold had just been discovered in California at the close of the Mexican War when Kit Carson started east from Los Angeles with dispatches. Going with him was Lieutenant George Douglas Brewerton, who describes their journey over the Old Spanish Trail. It was a torturous route across deserts and mountains requiring the kind of expert survival skills that made Kit Carson famous. The scout, who was carrying the news that would begin the rush for gold, went as far as Taos, where he was reunited with his wife. From there Brewerton joined a wagon train that labored over the Santa Fé Trail to Independence, Missouri. Overland with Kit Carson is a colorful and authentic account of encounters with Indians and white adventurers and of the hazards and hardships that accompanied anyone who undertook such a long journey in a sparsely populated country. “Of prime importance to many general readers as well as to historians will be Brewerton’s intimate and concrete pictures of Kit Carson.”—Southwest Review.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's Great Plains once possessed one of the grandest wildlife spectacles of the world, equaled only by such places as the Serengeti, the Masai Mara, or the veld of South Africa. Pronghorn antelope, gray wolves, bison, coyotes, wild horses, and grizzly bears: less than two hundred years ago these creatures existed in such abundance that John James Audubon was moved to write, "it is impossible to describe or even conceive the vast multitudes of these animals." In a work that is at once a lyrical evocation of that lost splendor and a detailed natural history of these charismatic species of the historic Great Plains, veteran naturalist and outdoorsman Dan Flores draws a vivid portrait of each of these animals in their glory—and tells the harrowing story of what happened to them at the hands of market hunters and ranchers and ultimately a federal killing program in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Great Plains with its wildlife intact dazzled Americans and Europeans alike, prompting numerous literary tributes. American Serengeti takes its place alongside these celebratory works, showing us the grazers and predators of the plains against the vast opalescent distances, the blue mountains shimmering on the horizon, the great rippling tracts of yellowed grasslands. Far from the empty "flyover country" of recent times, this landscape is alive with a complex ecology at least 20,000 years old—a continental patrimony whose wonders may not be entirely lost, as recent efforts hold out hope of partial restoration of these historic species. Written by an author who has done breakthrough work on the histories of several of these animals—including bison, wild horses, and coyotes—American Serengeti is as rigorous in its research as it is intimate in its sense of wonder—the most deeply informed, closely observed view we have of the Great Plains' wild heritage.

Book excerpt: Conchita Thornton Marusich has been interested in storytelling from a young age when her mother recounted tales about their ancestor, William Wolfskill-mountain man, adventurer and important figure in early California history. In her book In Search of William Wolfskill: Journey to Find the Legacy, Conchita writes about the adventures of her trailblazing great-great-grandfather, William Wolfskill. His historic journeys over the Santa Fe Trail in 1822-1828 and the Old Spanish Trail in 1830-1831 are packed with exciting stories as he made his way westward towards California. He settled in the small town of Los Angeles in 1831 and became a leading citizen. Famous for his Wolfskill citrus orchards and vineyards, William is recognized as the founder of California's commercial citrus industry and is also seen as an important figure in the growth of California's early wine business. His marriage to Magdalena Lugo united him with the prominent Lugo family of Santa Barbara and Southern California. Already a Mexican citizen from his trapper days in Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico, William lived through tumultuous times as Los Angeles changed from a small Mexican settlement into an American town after the Mexican-American War. During those transition years, he served as a bridge between the old California under Mexico and the emerging California under the United States. The book combines two stories. The first part of every chapter is Williams's story, which recounts his amazing life. The second part of every chapter tells about Conchita's journey of discovery as she and her husband, Rich, retraced William Wolfskill's footsteps through Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada and California. They wanted to meet William in his environment which meant going to where he had lived, trapped and traveled. Throughout the book, Conchita includes information that helped her dig deeply into her family's roots and find pieces of her genealogical puzzle. She also includes tips for the readers who are investigating their ancestors. Her journey of discovery further transformed her and her family into lovers of genealogy and history. In Search of William Wolfskill: Journey to Find the Legacy contains 40 illustrations and photographs, including rarely seen photos of Wolfskill family members as well as pictures from Conchita's and Rich's research and travels. The book is a fascinating, in-depth look at William Wolfskill-western pioneer and legend of early California.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of a sweeping two-volume history of the devastation brought to bear on Indian nations by U.S. expansion In this book, the first part of a sweeping two-volume history, Jeffrey Ostler investigates how American democracy relied on Indian dispossession and the federally sanctioned use of force to remove or slaughter Indians in the way of U.S. expansion. He charts the losses that Indians suffered from relentless violence and upheaval and the attendant effects of disease, deprivation, and exposure. This volume centers on the eastern United States from the 1750s to the start of the Civil War. An authoritative contribution to the history of the United States’ violent path toward building a continental empire, this ambitious and well-researched book deepens our understanding of the seizure of Indigenous lands, including the use of treaties to create the appearance of Native consent to dispossession. Ostler also documents the resilience of Native people, showing how they survived genocide by creating alliances, defending their towns, and rebuilding their communities.
