At seventy-eight hours and thirty-six minutes later, he reached the top of Mt. Whitney, 14,495 feet above sea level, the fourth person in history to do so. At mile 118, his crew shared the following inspiring poem. On December nights when the rain we needed months ago is still far off and the wind gropes through the desert in search of any tree to hold it those who live here all year round listen to the irresistible voice of loneliness and want only to be left alone local knowledge is to live in a place and know the place however barren some kinds of damage provide their own defense and we who stay in the ruins are secure against enemies and friends if you should see one of us in the distance as your caravan passes and if he is ragged and gesturing do not be mistaken he is not gesturing for rescue he is shouting go away From that moment until today, these words spoke volumes to this lone runner beside an empty road in the desert as he continues his quest for local knowledge to make and share an impact on our environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The many days and years of her life had been busy, challenging and rewarding, and sometimes overwhelmingly difficult. And over the years she began to dream the dream, as many do, that she could, just once, run away and escape from it all. She dreamed of Death Valley National Park, of a winter’s journey which promised her beauty, calm and a quieted mind. So when her life stress hit the tipping point, Jackie Keller left the university, packed her car and moved to the desert where she found everything she had dreamed of, plus blessings and adventures she had never envisioned. Through this true life story the reader can see the stunning beauty of this glorious national park, explore its history and share the rhythm of day-to-day life in the small community of Furnace Creek. Walk with her through a season of exploration, laughter and renewal. “For anyone who wants to rediscover his/her true self or perhaps find it for the first time, you are invited to join this middle aged professor who quit her job and went to live and work in a vast and imposing desert. It was a winter spent watching, learning, questioning and discovering things she would never have found without her self imposed exile….a beautiful true life story which Dr. Keller masterfully and artfully describes.” Shelley Stokes, Ph. D.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wrenching true tale of loss and redemption, Surviving Heartbreak Valley is the story of a woman who suffers the worst tragedy imaginable but somehow finds the courage to go on with life. In 1989 Linda Walls had put an abusive relationship behind her, graduated college, and was ready to start a new chapter in life. Then one night she returned home to find her house burning with her four children trapped inside. The children's father, Bernon Howery, a violent man who stalked Linda following their break-up, had ignited the blaze. In 1991 he was sentenced to death for his deeds. Linda meanwhile began the difficult process of putting her life back together. Rather than simply drowning in a sea of despair, she dedicated herself to preventing what had happened to her from befalling others. She became an advocate against stalking and domestic violence, conducting seminars and even appearing on Oprah and a Diane Sawyer documentary. But with Bernon Howery fighting to have his death sentence overturned, Linda's battle for justice and to establish a new life for herself was far from over. About the Author: Linda Fay Walls is a first-time author and advocate against domestic violence. A decade on from that tragic night in 1989, she gave birth to her now-teenage daughter and the two of them live happily in Illinois. For more information visit http: //www.lindawalls.net. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1969 a small meeting was convened at the CSIRO Riverina Laboratory, Deniliquin, New South Wales, to discuss the biology of the genus Atriplex, a group of plants considered by those who attended to be of profound importance both in relation to range management in the region and as a tool in physiological research. The brief report of this meeting (Jones, 1970) now serves as a marker for the subsequent remarkable increase in research on this genus, and served then to interest the editors of the Ecological Studies Series in the present volume. This was an exciting time in plant physiology, particularly in the areas of ion absorption and photosynthesis, and unknowingly several laboratories were engaged in parallel studies of these processes using the genus Atriplex. It was also a time at which it seemed that numerical methods in plant ecology could be used to delineate significant processes in arid shrubland ecosystems. Nevertheless, to presume to illustrate and integrate plant physiology and ecology using examples from a single genus was to presume much. The deficiencies which became increasingly apparent during the preparation of the present book were responsible for much new research described in these pages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since opening on February 1, 1927, with just 12 guest rooms, Furnace Creek Resort has achieved preeminence among US National Park lodges and hotels. Conceived by the Pacific Coast Borax Company in 1926, the inn was the answer to the declining mining industry, which had left the Death Valley Railroad with nothing to haul. The construction of Furnace Creek Inn helped to shift Death Valley’s draw from mining to tourism, bringing a new industry to the Old West. Steeped in history and tradition, the inn and the ranch have become as much a destination as the park itself. With naturally heated swimming pools, the world’s lowest golf course, four-diamond hospitality, and surroundings of unsurpassed natural beauty, Furnace Creek offers experiences that are long remembered by its guests.
