Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a successful business owner, you realize that financial success is just the beginning.you still have many other challenges to face. However, the real threat to the continued success and growth of your business doesn't come from ruthless competitors, spiraling costs, oppressive government regulations, militant unions or runaway inflation. The main threat lies in the managerial practices and policies that you - like too many other business owners - have chosen to follow since the day you started business. Over the years, age and success have become your partners and they demand from you a set of solutions and approaches that are totally different from what you had to use to survive in the "good ol' days." You had the dream, the ability, and the guts to build your business from virtual scratch, but now you must also have the guts to accept the fact that the perpetuation of your business is in your hands and is your responsibility. You've been running so fast and working so hard that it's been difficult for you to take an objective look at what you are doing - or failing to do - to ensure the survival, growth and profitable continuity of your business. Time is your most precious asset, but you only have a finite amount of it. You must begin by making some changes now, while there is still time to make them. In this book, Dr. Danco outlines his recommendations for ensuring the success, continuity, and perpetuation of the business you have built on your sweat, guts, and talent. As a teacher, consultant, and advisor for nearly four decades, to thousands of family-owned or privately-held businesses, he has made it his goal to force business owners to take critical looks at themselves, their actions, their business, and their family - examinations that are absolutely necessary if their dream is to survive. The survival of your company is a vital ingredient in our North American way of life. It depends on your courage and your action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the twentieth century, Americans came to embrace the defense and promotion of rights and democracy as a vital mission of U.S. foreign policy. But this popular view shifted during the George W. Bush administration. Bush's controversial crusade for democracyone that came to be associated with unilateralism, invasion, alliance, expansion, and double standardsso tainted the notion of democracy promotion that many in the foreign policy establishment exhorted President Obama to abandon the practice. In this passionate and persuasive book, Morton Halperin and Michael Fuchs argue that abandoning the promotion of democracy would be a great mistake. Patient efforts over the past three decades have laid the foundations for a widening international commitment to sustain and expand the writ of democracy in the world. An American retreat to "realism" would only hearten the autocracies that rightly fear going the way of the dinosaurs. Halperin and Fuchs present new and proactive ideas for how the United States can and should help countries that are on the path to democracy and how it may help peoples struggling to establish a democratic regime. Advance praise for "The Survival and the Success of Liberty " "Morton Halperin has been one of Washington's smartest strategic thinkers and once again, in "The Survival and the Success of Liberty," he shows us why. He illustrates a critical point: America benefits when more countries are democratic, and democracies should help each other not just to vote, but also to deliver what their people need." Madeleine K. Albright, 64th U.S. Secretary of State "Fresh in its insights and yet deeply informed by history, this book provides a viable and progressive alternative to the hubris and hypocrisy that has undermined previous American approaches to democracy promotion." Larry Diamond, senior fellow, Hoover Institution and Freeman Spogli Institute, and director, Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law, Stanford University "Honest, engaging, and deeply wise, it should be included in courses on U.S. foreign policy and read by all who care about making America's ideals more achievable. Ted Widmer, senior research fellow, American Strategy Program, New America Foundation, and director of the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University"

Book excerpt: Develop High-Level Awareness and Mental Strategies to Advance into Massive Success! There is an infinite amount of material out there on how to succeed, how to make money, how to trade stocks, how to grow your business, how to enhance your career, etc. Nowadays, we have no shortage of people teaching others how to be successful. The majority of people who read and take courses on "how to" material never actually succeed with it. That is a sad fact, because many people could have the beautiful and successful lives they want, but they are missing some key components that would get them results. Success opportunities may be presenting themselves to you every day, but the problem is they are in a language in which you may not be fluent. The point of this book is to teach you how to become “fluent” in the language of success and opportunity, so you can step out and receive this new world you can now perceive with full clarity and understanding. This book covers creating real success from scratch. It does not matter if you are at “knowledge” scratch, financial scratch, or “entry level job” scratch. It does not matter if you filed bankruptcy yesterday. In fact, being “at scratch” is perfectly okay because it has nothing to do with becoming successful. Where you are starting from means nothing, as long as you open your mind to the concepts I will be sharing with you to sculpt the right psychology to produce success and opportunity.

Book excerpt: By any measure, the movement toward entrepreneurship is increasing each year; data from the Small Business Administration indicates that there are over 5 million small businesses in operation in the United States. And while many resources provide practical information to guide the entrepreneur or small business owner through the challenges of establishing, managing, and growing their business, few tackle the more personal side of entrepreneurship in a rigorous fashion. According to a recent Gallup poll, seven out of ten high school students report that they want to start and run their own business. Every year, five million Americans launch their own ventures, according to the Small Business Administration. By any measure, the movement toward entrepreneurship is increasing each year. While many resources provide practical information to guide the entrepreneur or small business owner through the challenges of establishing, managing, and growing their business, few tackle the more personal side of entrepreneurship in a rigorous fashion. As Ted Sun argues, countless people are entering entrepreneurship in one form or another. Most have no clue how to be one.

We want to make a contribution, to be a part of something noble and purposeful. But many people wrongly believe significance is unattainable. They worry that it's too big for them to achieve. That they have to have an amazing idea, be a certain age, have a lot of money, or be powerful or famous to make a real difference. The good news is that none of those things is necessary for you to achieve significance and create a lasting legacy. The only thing you need to achieve significance is to be intentional. And to do that, all you need to do is start. You can't make an impact sitting still and doing nothing. Every major accomplishment that's ever been achieved started with a first step. Sometimes it's hard; other times it's easy, but no matter what, you have to do it if you want to get anywhere in life. In Intentional Living, John Maxwell will help you take that first step, and the ones that follow, on your personal path through a life that matters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comparative study analyses Cistercian strategies on the northern and north-eastern frontiers of medieval Europe. Through case studies of six houses in Pomerania and Neumark (Ko'bacz, Marienwalde, and Himmelstadt) and on the Scottish-English border (Melrose, Dundrennan, and Holm Cultram), the author traces the development of social networks around these monasteries within their own regions and across borders, and explores the importance of the international Cistercian networks for communities located in these politically sensitive areas. Very different socio-economic conditions in the regions under discussion resulted in quite different strategies of land accumulation by Cistercian monasteries in Scotland and Pomerania, which in turn had a lasting impact on their relationships with their neighbours. The author also examines the role of these abbeys in wider ecclesiastical politics and in relation to the key issues of the time: church reform and the expectations of the order's lay patrons and benefactors. In the fourteenth century, all of the abbeys experienced war, violence, and long-term instability. Their responses to these threats and difficulties are significant for our understanding of monastic strategies in hostile environments. Above all, this study shows how a Cistercian model was adapted to fit the complex political, cultural, and ethnic contexts of the southern Baltic, Northern England, and Scotland.

Book excerpt: ***Shortlisted for the Great Outdoors Book of the Year*** Surviving in the wild takes a great deal of strength. Often faced with frozen tundra, sweltering deserts, humid jungles, perilous mountains and fast-flowing rivers, Megan Hine is no stranger to perilous conditions. Whilst leading expeditions and bushcraft survival courses and in her work on television shows such as Bear Gryll's Mission Survive and Running Wild, she has explored the corners of the globe in pursuit of adventure. Faced with the toughest of conditions: bad weather; lack of food and being in the presence of predators, is the ultimate test of character and often the biggest challenge to overcome is in the head. In these situations, the human brain is simultaneously the greatest asset and biggest liability. Not everyone is suited to the great outdoors and when danger calls many aren't as well-equipped to survive, no amount of top of the range kit will save you if you don't have the right frame of mind. Here Megan Hine examines the human ability and instinct for survival, showing us how others have developed the attitudes and attributes to thrive in the most dangerous situations, and how those same attitudes and attributes help them confront problems and obstacles at work and at home. Being chased through the jungle by armed opium farm guards, abseiling past bears and lighting fires with tampons, Megan has seen and done it all. In Mind of a Survivor she takes you along for a series of life-and-death adventures and shows you what happens to people when they are pushed to their limits. Inspirational rather than instructional, Megan examines the human ability and instinct for survival sharing the life tools that she uses and showing how they can as easily be applied to more domestic everyday life - from careers to relationships, from overcoming adversity to decision making. Filled with her own experiences, Mind of a Survivor is packed full of adventure and can help people survive in any situation and cope with whatever life throws at them.
