Book excerpt: As a police officer, you are in a brotherhood much like the marines or a special operations-type soldier. You would do anything for your brother, even die for them. In the years 2016 and 2017, there were a lot of rookie cops getting killed in the line of duty. This hurts you to the core. One night I was crying out to the Lord and asked him, "Lord, what can I do to help? My brothers and sisters are being killed every day." I was beside myself with grief, and I believe I heard God speak to me in a still, small voice, "Give them your knowledge. Give them your years of experience." So I wrote a book. During this time, survival shows were all the rage. So the title Survival Handbook for Rookies (Rookie Cops) was born. I've held onto it, waiting for the Lord to say when, and I believe he is saying, "The time is now!" If this book helps one person, it will have been all worth it.

Book excerpt: Instruction on officer safety covers surviving occupational stress, cardiovascular risks, traffic risks, suicide risks, field threats, and wounds and injury. Police job-related risks are in the general categories of disease, accident, suicide, and homicide. Occupational stress can be a contributing factor to death or injury in all these areas, as it undermines physical and mental health as well as alertness and concentration in the performance of field duties. Stress may derive from the nature of the work, community sources, internal departmental operations, the justice system, family relationships, and from the officer's personality. Countering cardiovascular risk involves understanding the risk, dealing with and preventing high blood pressure, watching diet, eliminating smoking, and giving attention to exercise and body composition. Surviving traffic risks involves focusing on routine patrol driving, emergency and pursuit driving, vehicle safety, safety devices, and pedestrian hazards. Countering the risk involves being attentive to the warning signs and undertaking preventive steps. Surviving field threats means being attentive to safety procedures for general patrol duties and those appropriate for specific duties and situations, such as felony carstops, robbery calls, burglary calls and building searches, dealing with deranged persons, ambushes, disturbance calls, and field interviews. Guidelines for surviving wounds and injury are to not panic, stop the bleeding, protect your air, prevent shock, and follow other self-aid principles. Graphic and photographic illustrations are provided.

Unfortunately, increased awareness about disaster preparedness has caused an information overload. It is easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information available. Basic Survival helps readers dig out from under the avalanche of preparedness information. It dispels myths, introduces concepts, and teaches the basics of how to start preparing for disaster. Author David Nash, a lifelong prepper and the author of 52 Prepper Projects and The Prepper’s Guide to Foraging outlines an all-hazards approach to disaster management similar to the ones used by the military and federal and state governments. Nash has over ten years of experience in government emergency management as a planner, a first responder, and as an emergency operations center manager. Basic Survival is a great resource that presents a strong foundation for being prepared when an emergency hits.

Book excerpt: John “Lofty” Wiseman is the author of the bestselling SAS Survival Handbook, the definitive guide to survival in the wild from Britain’s Special Air Service. Now he has compiled the complete guide to surviving among crowds of people, the mazes of office buildings, the dangers of an unfeeling city—put simply, how to stay safe in the urban jungle. Thousands of preventable fatalities occur in the home every year— more than on the roads, more than in the great outdoors. Household chemicals, electricity, cooking knives, and rodent poisons—in the wrong hands and with improper usage, these day-to-day resources bring danger to your home. Add to this the risks of moving through city streets (the threat of rape, muggings, and gang violence) and the menace of natural disasters (floods, earthquakes, blizzards) that cannot be avoided. Every day serves as a constant reminder: The world is truly a frightening place. The SAS Urban Survival Guide advises readers to think practically about urban environments and offers tips and instructions on how to avoid hazards wherever one goes. From self-defense techniques to home security systems to coping with natural disasters, this book teaches readers to recognize danger, make quick decisions, and live confidently in the modern world.
