Book Synopsis Survey of Fish Impingement at Power Plants in the United States. Volume II. Inland Waters by :
Download or read book Survey of Fish Impingement at Power Plants in the United States. Volume II. Inland Waters written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impingement of fish at cooling-water intakes of 33 power plants located on inland waters other than the Great Lakes has been surveyed and data are presented. Descriptions of site, plant, and intake design and operation are provided. Reports in this volume summarize impingement data for individual plants in tabular and histogram formats. Information was available from differing sources such as the utilities themselves, public documents, regulatory agencies, and others. Thus, the extent of detail in the reports varies greatly from plant to plant. Histogram preparation involved an extrapolation procedure that has inadequacies. The reader is cautioned in the use of information presented in this volume to determine intake-design acceptability or intensity of impacts on ecosystems. No conclusions are presented herein; data comparisons are made in Volume IV.

Book Synopsis Perspectives on Fish Impingement by :
Download or read book Perspectives on Fish Impingement written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data on fish impingement and related parameters are being gathered at a large number of power stations throughout the country at substantial monetary and manpower costs. A national survey of fish impingement at power plants was conducted and much of the information compiled in a standardized format--an effort that we think will aid in planning improvements in the design, siting, and operation of the cooling-water intakes. This paper examines the objectives of the fish impingement studies, monitoring programs, variables affecting fish impingement, siting and design criteria, state-of-the-art of screening systems, and suggestions for meeting 316(b) requirements. It also discusses where the emphasis should be placed in future fish-impingement related activities.

Download or read book Science, Law, and Hudson River Power Plants written by Lawrence W. Barnthouse and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists spent more than 15 years studying the physical and chemical characteristics and biological productivity of the estuary and documenting the abundance, distribution, and life histories of the major fish species. New sampling equipment and analytical methods were developed. Sophisticated models of the striped bass and other importanat Hudson River fish populations were developed. Most of the results of these studies are buried in contractor reports, magnetic tape libraries, and hearings transcripts. Our objective in producing this monograph is to make this information accessible to the scientific community. Our intent is to 1) summarize the scientific issues and approaches; 2) Present the significant results of the Hudson River biological studies; 3) describe the role of the studies in the decision-making process; 4) evaluate the successes and failures of the studies, and 5) present recommendations for future estuarine impact assessments.
Book Synopsis Ecological Effects of Electricity Generation, Storage and Use by : Peter Henderson
Download or read book Ecological Effects of Electricity Generation, Storage and Use written by Peter Henderson and published by CABI. This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the past, present and future generation and use of electricity. While noting the importance of electricity to the well-being of people, it argues that all means of electricity generation have adverse ecological consequences. The ecological effects of all the main forms of electricity generation, storage and transmission are reviewed in 14 chapters. The chapters briefly cover the engineering and physics of each method of electricity generation followed by a description of the different ways in which the technology interacts with the natural world. Finally, sections consider the importance of these impacts and how they can be mitigated or avoided. A final chapter summarizes the issues and emphasizes that the only way to truly minimize the impacts of electricity generation is to reduce our consumption and transmission. Future efforts should continue to focus on increasing the efficiency of light production, refrigeration, electrical appliances and batteries.
