Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doing English in Asia: Global Literature and Culture examines the effect of globalization on the curriculum of Asian universities. As knowledge of the English language has increasingly been understood as necessary to excel in international business, a number of Asian universities have replaced the traditional study of English literature and culture with applied English or English for specified purposes. This edited collection tackles the question of how to teach English language and culture through literature in case studies from practitioners all across Asia. Contributors thus balance the need for students to understand the interface between English cultures and their own with the pressure to prepare them for employment in this changing environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book aims at providing a comprehensive survey of Old English literature by one of the best known and most widely experienced Anglo-Saxon scholars of our time. C.L. Wrenn has long been acclaimed internationally for his varied contributions to Anglo-Saxon studies, especially during the seventeen years of his tenure of the Rawlinson and Bosworth Professorship of Anglo-Saxon in the University of Oxford, and for his masterly edition of Beowulf. He brings to this new book not only mature and lively scholarship, but a rare ability to interest the beginner and general reader as well as the specialist. A Study of Old English Literature embraces all the writing done in England which can properly be called and in any exact sense be termed literature from the time of Caedmon to the Norman Conquest, not excluding the more important Latin works. It covers poetry that is heroic and epic, elegiac, religious, and gnomic, and prose that is didactic, expository, and historical. Some emphasis is placed on the fascinating features of Anglo-Saxon archaeology and on the continuity of Old English thought and culture. Indeed, this book may well prove to be the most outstanding achievement of a remarkable career." -Publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of the book, with its emending and updated text, provides a glimpse into the English life and culture, starting from the middle ages to the twenty-first century. As the English life and culture are inextricably interwoven with the literary traditions of England and its myriad aspects, this study provides significant insights into the field of English literature and the contexts it emerges from. The text begins with a description of English life and culture from the Medieval period to the Renaissance. The author gives a masterly analysis of such subjects as Feudalism, Medieval Drama and literature, the Renaissance, the Reformation and most significantly, the Elizabethan Theatre. A new sub-section on 'Women Writers of the Renaissance' has been added to this chapter. Then, the text goes on to describe in detail about the Restoration Period and the Age of Reason. Besides, the book gives a wealth of information on important topics like Romanticism, the Industrial Revolution, Victorianism and Victorian literature. The text concludes with a chapter that deals on Modernism, Literature and Culture in the Postmodern World, and Aspects of Contemporary Culture and Society. In the last chapter, two sub-sections have been introduced on 'British Fiction in the Twenty-First Century' and 'Brexit'. What distinguishes the text is the provision of a Glossary at the end of each chapter, which gives not only the meaning and definition of the terms but also provides the entire cultural background and the history that these terms are associated with. Students of English literature—both undergraduate honours and postgraduate students—will find this book highly informative, enlightening, and refreshing in its style. In addition, all those who have an abiding interest in English life and culture will find reading this text a stimulating and rewarding experience TARGET AUDIENCE • BA (Hons.) Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to give a brief and plain introduction to English literature and the authors. The author of this book vividly describes the outstanding English works and life history of famous writers. He has covered almost all outstanding writers of English literature. The knowledge of English literature would tend no less, to the spread of healthy historic views among the people. The literature of every nation is its autobiography. Even in its most complex and artistic forms, it is still a wonderfully artless and unconscious record of its doubts and its faith, its sorrows and its triumphs at each era of its existence. In the pages that follows, considerable space has been devoted to the literature. The plan adopted in the work has been to deal solely with very greatest names in the several department of English literature. Neither wealth of information nor depth of thought gives a work a right to be called literature unless the information and the thought be attractively expressed. The author has fully met this condition. This outstanding book will be of great interest to scholars and students of English literature as well as to general readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging book introduces new readers of eighteenth-century texts to some of the major works, authors, and debates of a key period of literary history. Rather than simply providing a chronological survey of the era, this book analyzes the impact of significant cultural developments on literary themes and forms - including urbanization, colonial, and mercantile expansion, the emergence of the "public sphere," and changes in sex and gender roles. In eighteenth-century Britain, many of the things we take for granted about modern life were shockingly new: women appeared for the first time on stage; the novel began to dominate the literary marketplace; people entertained the possibility that all human beings were created equal, and tentatively proposed that reason could triumph over superstition; ministers became more powerful than kings, and the consumer emerged as a political force. Eighteenth-Century English Literature: 1660-1789 explores these issues in relation to well-known works by such authors as Defoe, Swift, Pope, Richardson, Gray, and Sterne, while also bringing attention to less familiar figures, such as Charlotte Smith, Mary Leapor, and Olaudah Equiano. It offers both an ideal introduction for students and a fresh approach for those with research interests in the period.
