This book was released on 1995 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conducted to determine the truck drivers' travel characteristics, concerns about work zone traffic control devices, and assessment of work zone features, as well as to determine the location of accidents and bad driving situations based on the experiences and perceptions of truck drivers. A statewide survey of semi-truck drivers was conducted in 6 locations in Illinois. The questionnaire contained 43 questions about truck drivers and travel characteristics, drivers' assessment of work zone features and traffic control devices, their accident and bad driving situation experiences, and their suggestions for improving traffic flow and safety in the work zones. About 930 truck drivers participated in the survey, and the responses from 834 of them were found suitable for further data analysis. The frequency of the responses to each question were analyzed. Also correlation analyses were conducted to identify the relationships among the surveyed questions. Different statistical tests were used for data analysis. Volume II of the final report, contains a detailed report of the study, including all of the information that is included in Volume I, which contains the summary of findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies have shown that drivers are at a higher risk of being involved in a crash when travelling through a work zone compared to normal driving conditions. Research further suggests that the crashes that occur in work zones are, on average, more severe than crashes that occur outside of work zones. The periods while temporary traffic control is being set-up, removed, or modified are also especially concerning given the exposure of the workers to traffic and the transition in the driving environment. This study aims to investigate the safety hazards and risk present during set-up, removal, and modification of temporary traffic control on high-speed roadways, and identify potential practices for improving safety during the traffic control deployment and removal processes. To date, the researchers have performed a comprehensive literature review on the study topic and conducted a survey of state department of transportation and highway construction contractor personnel. The results reveal a lack of a standard process/procedure and detailed guidance for setting up and removing traffic control. The survey results expose steps in the process that pose high risk to workers and motorists, such as when the traffic control is being placed to initially set the taper to close a lane. This document is an interim report that describes the study results to date and provides a proposed methodology for the remaining study tasks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highway work zones create potential hazards because motorists are confronted with unexpected and often confusing situations. The objective of this research study was to examine motorists' perceptions, opinions, expectations and other psychological factors, which influence their driving activity in highway work zones. The study was carried out in two parts: an opinion survey and focus groups. A two-page questionnaire was distributed to 2,246 automobile and truck drivers.

Book excerpt: This synthesis documents information regarding the current state of practice for work zone speed management. The report compiles data, procedures, techniques, and technical issues related to observing and comparing work zone speeds. The speed management measures have been organized into four categories: engineering, operational, enforcement, and public education and outreach. Information included in this study was acquired through a review of the literature, two surveys of state department of transportation representatives in all states, a compilation of state agency public information campaigns, and follow-up interviews with select survey respondents from several U.S. states and one Canadian province.

Download or read book Evaluation of Work Zone Safety Using the SHRP2 Naturalistic Driving Study Data written by and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This toolbox is one of the deliverables for the culmination of several phases of a project, which evaluated driver behavior in work zones using the SHRP2 Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS) data. The toolbox summarizes information about work zone traffic control devices, countermeasures, and work zone features that have a demonstrated impact on speed in work zones. Features were identified through a survey of the literature. Additional information for some of the features and countermeasures was gained through the various analyses of SHRP2 data conducted through this project. Guidance from the work zone traffic control manuals for various states was summarized when appropriate. Recommendations for use of each feature or countermeasure relevant to addressing speed in work zones was developed by the team and reviewed by work zone experts and the project panel." -- Vol.1
